configuring hmailserver with mysql/wamp

Post by Jaws » 2016-06-19 18:15

Hello

I'm try to install hmailserver in combination with wamp/mysql.

I get an errormessage, hmailserver recommends to copy a file manually.

copypaste:
Error:
The MySQL client (libmysql.dll, 32 bit) could not be loaded.
hMailServer needs this file to be able to connect to MySQL.
The MySQL client needs to be manually copied to the hMailServer Bin directory. The file is not included in the hMailServer installation.
Path: H:\Program Files (x86)\hMailServer\Bin\libmysql.dll
can I just copy this or is moving/copying maybe affecting mysql?

If you move the file it will harm your MySQL Server installation, espacially the MySQL client functions. This can lead to PHP and MySQL Administration tools problems. But you can copy the file without problems where ever you want.

ok thanks for the tip, I installed it, but I dont have hmailserver working yet

I'm trying to go through the db setup wizard again, but I have a few questions.

step 4 of 7

required:
database server address: ? (I used localhost but not sure whether this is good)
database name: mail_test
authentication : user / password ( used for access to my mysql database)

I've been reading (briefly) through some pages. I saw some recommendations for having a registered domain name. I dont want that. I would like to do it with virtual hosts on WAMP local hosted, WAMP will not be put online.

Can this be done?

If someone here has experience setting up hmailserver in the way I described above then plz explain what my settings should be in step 4 of the wizard. or you can make an educated guess of course :)

Sure this can be done and its nothing fancy about it. The only thing is all your emails on hMailServer will be delivered to mickymouse@localhost and minimouse@localhost .It can be usefull if you are an Webdeveloper for testing puposes. But if you want to create a working, local domain or even an Internet Mailsite setup you need an Authoritative DNS-Server installation with a carefully crafted and tested forward and reverse zone configuration.

You've set up your MySQL, not us...only you can know your settings

a) Yes localhost could be correct
b) doesn't matter, just don't create it first, let hmailserver installer create it
c) must have full permissions for the database in b), doesn't have to be root

I went through the wizard again using localhost as database server address.

I couldnt connect.
I checked the errorlog
output:

Code: Select all

"ERROR"	9160	"2016-06-20 07:47:59.875"	"Severity: 2 (High), Code: HM5033, Source: DALRecordset::Open, Description: MySQL: Table 'mail_test.hm_dbversion' doesn't exist (Additional info: select * from hm_dbversion)"

so obviously a table doesnt exist.

For me it is not clear what hmailserver wants.
Should I create a table and then ... what records should be in it?

What is the purpose of a database with tables and records, which columns are required, obliged maybe or useful?
I would like to find so answers to these questions.

Drop the Database in MySQL (start MySQL Workbench, login as MySQL root user and rerun hMailServer setup again.

You need your MySQL username and password.
Follow the hMailServer Setupwizard instructions to the point where it needs the libmysql.dll file.Goto Windows Explorer and copy the libmysql.dll file into your
c:\Program files (x86)hMailServer\bin
folder, go back into the hMailServer Setup-Wizzard and continue.

After this, just start hMailServer Admin (hMailServer server will start automatically, if not allready started). You sould now be able to sucessfully connect to your new hMailServer installation.

In hMailServer Admin just click Add new domain,
type in localhost and hit ok.Setup a Backup directory and hit ok, now there should be no errors left. At this point you should be able to run the Diagnostic Button without anye error messages.
Add a user (for example goofy under Domains - in your case - localhost)

Start your Thunderbird/Outlook and use the goofy@localhost as username inside Thunderbird/Outlook as user and its password - your Email program should be able to connect.

You should now be able to start Outlook or Thunderbird and write a new Email to goofy@localhost.

no you shouldn't create the tables or the database

The hmailserver installer does that itself.

There is a DBsetup.exe in the bin folder, just running that will create the database, no need to reinstall (although reinstalling should also work).
Did you give the user you used in the hmailserver setup the required access in MySQL first??

You can savely ignore this Errormassage.

Your hMailServer is right now configured for EMail-Services on you private computer only.
No other server can find or can communicate back to you hMailServer. This would be an Major
Error if you running an "real" Internetmailsite but for your setup its ok.

I left my antivirus the way it was.

But, I could not send an email with opera mail.

I actually installed it because I have a php script using mail() to send a message.

This script didnt work too. I received the following browser output:
Warning: mail(): SMTP server response: 530 SMTP authentication is required.
I searched for a solution online and they were recommending changing the ip-ranges, so i checked them all, not sure if this is needed. But didnt get the mail send yet.

How to solve this?

Slow down there, Forrest!

One step at a time. Get HMS running and working in its basic form before you start bolting on anything such as webmail/php scripts etc.

install an email client (such as Thiunderbird) on your server and get emails successfully working. Then when its all proved ok, then start playing with webmail.

So, again..... this first (Get DIAGNOSTIC working before even doing the email client)

it is the simplest way.

But you could start by THINKING your way through the chain and checking each step manually. (Checking is always step 2 - step one is to ensure the work is done first).

Firewall on HMS server.
Firewall on router

Check they are open. If DIAGNOSTICS still cant connect to mail.hmailserver.com then call your ISP. (no telnet required).

I got rid of the: - 530 SMTP authentication is require - message . I unchecked smtp authentication in IP-ranges both for my computer as for internet.

But the email was not found in my inbox.

About the earlier issues. I dont have port 25 open. I used nmap to check that. Kaspersky blocks that I think, but is that a problem?

I saw topics online in which users tried to use Kaspersky for scanning incoming mails.
Are there any settings I should adjust in Kaspersky that you know?

my DNS settings are okay I checked that as it is done with nslookup set type=mx gmail giving a range of gmail mx records.

There is standard a smtp protocol configured at port 587.

Can I use that?

And should I adjust settings in apache / php if I use this port 587 ?

Sorry to bother you but i'm a real noob at email protocolling so I'm really stuck with the whole situation.

I decided to use port 587 for setting up hmailserver.

I changed the smtp settings to those of my provider smtp.myprovider.com. My provider has smtp default at 587.

In wamp in the php.ini file I changed the settings of smtp to smtp.myprovider.com and port to 587 and restarted wamp. (not sure if this are all the settings I have to change for WAMP, please help me I need more explanation about that ....)

if I run diagnostics for my smtp.myprovider.com and include the virtual host then I have 2 error messages.

If i run diagnostics without the virtual host I made I have no errors at all

the mail() php script does not yet send any mails.

What can I do to have the script sent the email?

You can do nothing to make php mail() sends EMail correctly/or without its ben marked as spam on the destination system. Its not recommended to do so this in php anymore, regardles if you are
on Windows, Linux/Unix or Mac.

and what is your recommendation to send a message with php to an external gmail account then?

Plus I would like to say that I checked my spam folder but no message there either.

Remote EMail Provides like GMail or Hotmail checking form spam. If you want to sent EMails via PHP you should use PHP XMailer or some other Pear package wichi supports starttls / or auth smtp.

Like this :

Simply forget it.

You will never sent an EMail successfully to an outside Mailserver (GMail, Hotmail ect) without a DNS-Server.

Following prequesites must exist:

1) You have to be the owner of an Domain (rent a vServer/Root server ect + Domain)
2) Your Hostingprovider needs to change the DNS-MX which should point to your server ip address.
3) DSL or Dynamic IP doesnt work (even if you use DynDNS), you need an STATIC IP.

Something like hostfile entries is only for local testing, its not possible in any shape or form to run an
usable SMTP-Server on the Internet with hostfile settings.

Hmm ... but there are several mail emulators. They work succesfully, even sending from localhost to an external email address.

Why can't hmailserver be used as an emulator?

Sure if port 25 outbound was open for you, you could send whatever you like to where ever you like.
The rest of the world would simply see this as the rubbish that it is, and either (mostly) not accept it, or mark it as spam (if you are lucky)

Ok so if I understand it well I can use hMailServer for sending messages using a php script, if I install PEAR or XMailer?

Which one is most easy to set up?

PEAR is a frame work can it be setup next to WAMP with framework Zend?

Of cause. Zend Framework and the PEAR package collection for PHP doesnt bite each other. Zend Framework (version 2 is common right now) and has its own Email fuctions but you can use what ever you want. But Zend Framework is a Haevy Framework and you will need a few weeks/month of training before you are ready to write working webapps.
Maybe you should try Codeignitor or YII which are verry popular and easier to learn but not less powerfull then ZF.

But, this wont solve your hMailServer DNS setup problem.
Sending an EMail depends on correct DNS-Server settings in the first place on the Internet. Dont even try it from your Homecomputer behind and DSL or WLAN connection with dynamic IP, it will fail. You need a Windows Server with an static ip address (vServer or a real Hardware server at some Hosting Company like GoDaddy, Rackspace, Digital Ocean ect). Upload your PHP Webapp/scripts to this rented server and you are ready to go. Of cause a cheap Webspace on Linux will do the same but if you dont rent atleast a cheap vServer with Windows in it you cant use hMailServer or change the Software packages on such a Webspace.

Well not really...

I run hMailserver of my Wndows 10 pro machine from my home office, via business grade broadband with a static IP address. I have real domains that I manage the DNS entries for on the server owned by the domain registry company.

What you **NEED** is not much
What you will **REQUIRE** to get your mail not marked as Spam, is real domains, business class broadband (not dynamic IP, Home DSL).
PHP can work without any add-ins, but isn't very secure and hence not trusted by the world.

Please show your PHPinfo page results

Yeah this can be done but i would not recommend it. The last time i tested such a Setup it was 1999 on a ISDN phone line 64 KBits. It was ok, but the performance way ugly. On a modern KVM-Vserver or Dedicated server in the EU you get 1 GBits uplink, cheap Windows Server licenses, DDOS-Protection for your server and good peering to diffrent carriers. But maybe in Aussie its a bit diffrent as in Germany :)

ps: PHP mail() lately is a real problem at least on Hotmail/Outlook.com and German Telekom inboxes. I had some clients where Email wasnt delivered and bounced. I replaced mail() and everything was ok.

PEAR seems not really active anymore.

I dont want to change my ipadres from dynamic to static. ** I actually cant achieve the technical support of my provider **

I'm starting to think more about an emulator kind of piece of software I guess its more suitable for me at the moment.

In the future maybe I reconsider hmailserver again.

You are wasting your time then. Every main email host recipient will likely deem your emails as spam - at best they will be delivered to a SPAM folder, at worst they will be rejected.

You should really consuder to rent a cheap
Windows vServervwith static ip like this:
https://contabo.com/?show=vps
Or use Amazons Cloudserver where you only pay by CPU usage.

Its like Jim and Matt trying to explain to you .
Dynamic ip addresses is a no go (for any SMTP-Server on the Internet) you really wasting your time. This will be the same situation if you have Linux and for example Postfix, Sendmail or Exim
Installed instead of hMailServer. The showstopper is really your dynamic ip address. There is been a reason why Hostin Companys like GoDaddy or Softlayer exist.
