Can´t receive forwarded emails - 530 SMTP authentication is required

Post by Taucher35 » 2015-04-26 21:03

Hello,
i have a problem to receive automatically forwarded emails. For example from web.de.
The error message is: 530 SMTP authentication is required. (in reply to RCPT TO command)
If i open a email on the webpage on web.de and click on a existing email on "to forward" i get the email, only on automatically forwarding not.
The same issue is on t-online.de.
Everything else works fine and i can get and send emails.
Can anyone help?

You need to isolate the webmail server in 'ip ranges' to override the default INTERNET range and allow it without authentication (if I have understood you correctly - but probably not).

Can you show us your IP RANGE settings please?

ALSO, do you have web.de in a Route?
If so, show us a screen shot of the route please

AND, do you have web.de as a local domain
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

Oh, i haven´t any settings in the "ip ranges" or/and in the "routes". There are the default values only...
If i understand it correctly, i have to set up it for all email provider.
For example:
web.de
The ip address for the smtp.web.de is 213.165.67.108
The ip address for the pop3.web.de is 212.227.17.161
The ip address for the imap.web.de is 212.227.17.162
For my problem i need the ip for the smtp server only. Or?

Can you give me an example for this with an external provider please!?

@mattg
web.de is not a local domain, is a big email provider in germany.

Ok, so let me clarify what I thinkk is your situation (because your original post is misleading):

you have HMS, and it is set with a domain "yourcompany.de"

You have an email account set up with web.de, called heinz@web.de.

When you log in to the webmail at 'webmail.web.de', you view all messages that have been sent to you at heinz@web.de.

When you choose one of those emails, and click FORWARD to forward to heinz@yourcompany.de, it works fine.

But if you set up a filter within the webmail@web.de to automatically forward to heinz@yourcompany.de all emails received for heinz@web.de it doesnt work because (somewhere) you see the message/error 'AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED'.

Is this correct?

And when you look in your Hmailserver logs (under SMTP) at that point, what does it say? (Post the log here using

Yes I do. Now explain to me what we are seeing there:

1, Because I see 2 attempts of delivery to @elektronischewelt.com - is that your hmailserver domain?

2, And why is one to SIE@ and the other is INFO@?

3, And how were these 2 deliveries initiated (auto-forwarding or manual forwarding?)

4, the second one was delivered/accepted without a problem - did you receive it?

Please also run a DIAGNOSTIC and do a 'copy to clipboard' and paste it here.

And now SHOW us your IP RANGE screens please (you can attach them to your posting)

Absolutely NOT

You should not have to set anything up within your hMailserver to receive mail from outside domains, not to send to outside domains (if port 25 is open)
You can't possible know every domain that will send you mail

The way that the email going is in the following description.
I send for testing with the account info@elektronischewelt.de.
The domain elektronischewelt.com and .de are mine, true.
I send for testing an email to a account on web.de and this account has the filter for automatically forwarding to sie@elektronischewelt.com.
And i get the error message "... authentication is required" on the account where i send the testmail, also info@elektronischewelt.de
And now?

Im still not fully understanding. You didnt fully answer my questions or provide the IP RANGE settings,

1, use an EXTERNAL account (eg gmail) to send an email to info@elektronischewelt.de. Does it receive?

2, use an EXTERNAL account to send an email to the WEB.DE external mail account. Does that get forwarded on to you HMAILSERVER account ok?

POST COPIES of your IP RANGES an answer my previous post's questions.

Go into the INTERNET 'ip range' and show a screen shot of the settings please. (My guess is you have AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED for 'Local to Local')

In this test (when sending from HMS to web.de), when you MANUALLY forward the email from web.de, and you receive it, what does the FROM address say? Is it the web.de account or is it the original HMS info@elektronischewelt.de account?

Yes, local to local needs a authentication...

If i manually forward a received email from HMS from the web.de account, the from address is the web.de account.
How should the correct settings be in the ip-ranges in the internet section?

Im afraid you have hit a barrier that has been introduced by web.de policy.

Some mail operators change the FROM envelope upon automatically forwarding an email to match that of the forwarding account (as if you had forwarded manually). Example, Google do this (anything forwarded from them will have the FROM changed to being the @GMAIL.de address that is doing the forwarding). However, some operators do NOT change the FROM and it remains as the original sender. This is what web.de are doing. Consequently your HMS is seeing an email being delivered as FROM local address TO local address - and therefore as per your settings requires authentication (Local to Local).

HOWEVER... this should only be a problem when sending emails FROM your elektronischewelt domain (HMS) TO your web.de (and other webmail providers) that operate as described above.

You cant do anything about it, but cant really see a problem. How often are you sending an email FROM elektronischewelt.de. to a webmail provider (ie, web.de) that you have set up to AUTOMATICALLY forward emails BACK to elektronischewelt.de ? (I suspect never). As you have already seen other emails (from other external suppliers) do get forwarded to you correctly without a problem.

If its REALLY a problem for you (but still cant understand why you want to email yourself via external forwarding), why not turn off the auto-forwarding at web.de and instead setup an External Download from web.de. That way it will still receive anything that landed at web.de.

Thank you very much for help and i understand your statements.
Normally i do not send from my @elektronischewelt to @elektronischewelt over the @web account, only if i will test anything like the automatically forward as this post is resulting ;-)
However, now i know why it doesn´t work over web.de.
Are the settings in my ip ranges ok?

If you go into IP RANGES and click DEFAULT then they will be ok. However, for more security you could turn OFF 'Allow External to External Deliveries' - you dont need it.

Also, do you need POP3? If not, disable it.

If you were to allow local to local on the internet range, then this message would get through.

Message from ...@elektronischewelt.de being delivered to ...@elektronischewelt.de is local-to-local
You WOULD ADDITIONALLY get heaps of spam, because SPAMmers often fake the FROM to match the recipient domain.

If you are likely to NEED to do this frequently but don't want to open for spammers, you COULD also set an IP range for the range of MX servers for web.de, and allow local to local without authentication.
This then would only allow SPAM originating from one of the MX servers of web.de
