Can't connect to server

Post by woodfold » 2012-11-18 04:44

With Live Mail I get:
An unknown error has occurred.

Subject 'test 2'
Server Error: 421
Server Response: 421 Cannot connect to SMTP server 66.76.198.229 (66.76.198.229:465), connect error 10061
Server: 'mail.thatsnowsthegoat.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC67
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No
Outlook can't connect either.

Diagnostics gives:
Test: Collect server details
hMailServer version: hMailServer 5.3.3-B1879
Database type: MSSQL Compact

Test: Test IPv6
IPv6 support is available in operating system.

Test: Test outbound port

Trying to connect to host mail.hmailserver.com...
Trying to connect to TCP/IP address 46.163.110.124 on port 25.
Connected successfully.

Test: Test MX records
Trying to resolve MX records for thatsnowsthegoat.com...
Host name found: mail.thatsnowsthegoat.com

Test: Test local connect

Trying to connect to host mail.thatsnowsthegoat.com...
Trying to connect to TCP/IP address 66.76.198.229 on port 25.
Connected successfully.
I'm forwarding ports 110 and 25. My business account does not block these ports. The server is on the same PC as Live Mail and Outlook. I can't telnet to the server, but I can to mail.hmailserver.com.

Any ideas?
TIA

I stopped and restarted the server, then tried to connect with Outlook and Live Mail.

Hi,

just a thought that port 465 is usualli ssl'ed (quoted but bold inserted by me):
Server Response: 421 Cannot connect to SMTP server 66.76.198.229 (66.76.198.229:465), connect error 10061
but the log shows you're not using SSL:
Secure(SSL): No
I read that Windows live mail does use port 587. It's ssl'ed (don't know if optional) + you have to authentificate yourself with user+password.

BTW: The log snippet may be very much too short. And mattg needs the logs from the time the error occured, not the restart.

If those logs include when you tried to connect to hMailserver, and nothing of the connection was logged, then the client wasn't connecting to your hMailserver (irrespective of the port used).

Check your mail client configuration, and change to the local IP address if needed rather than server name, and try again...

Tried that, got the same:
"APPLICATION" 216 "2012-11-18 17:34:34.744" "Stopping servers..."
"APPLICATION" 216 "2012-11-18 17:34:35.539" "Servers stopped."
"APPLICATION" 216 "2012-11-18 17:34:37.380" "Starting servers..."
"DEBUG" 8152 "2012-11-18 17:34:37.380" "SMTPDeliveryManager::Start()"
"DEBUG" 7276 "2012-11-18 17:34:37.380" "ExternalFetchManager::Start()"
"TCPIP" 7672 "2012-11-18 17:34:37.396" "TCPConnection - Posting AcceptEx on 0.0.0.0:25"
"TCPIP" 7672 "2012-11-18 17:34:37.411" "TCPConnection - Posting AcceptEx on 0.0.0.0:110"
"TCPIP" 7672 "2012-11-18 17:34:37.411" "TCPConnection - Posting AcceptEx on 0.0.0.0:143"
"APPLICATION" 216 "2012-11-18 17:34:37.411" "Servers started."
Maybe I need to call my ISP about seeing if 25 and 110 are blocked. My account used to be residential (with blocked ports) and is now a business account.

In hMailserevr Admin GUI what do you have in TCP/IP settings?
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

In rechecking everything, I discovered Windows Firewall was running and hMainServer was not entered in allowed programs. Adding it has allowed me to pickup and send mail.

Thanks to mattg and random for your time, sorry it was such a simple error.

I do have another delivery problem, but I'll research it thoroughly before starting another thread.

Thanks again,

James

You should NOT add hMailserver.exe as an exception
You SHOULD allow mail ports through as exceptions (25, 110 & 143 normally)
