I wish people would give at least some background when reporting these kinds of error. Without having any clue on the background, you would have to be an oracle to say why you got that message :)

1) Has this problem occured recently? Or has it "always" been this way?
2) Have you tried sending to other addresses?
3) What operating system are you using?
4) Are you using any bandwidth limiters or monitors, such as NetLimiter?
5) Are you running any "live" anti virus scanner on the computer that monitors network traffic?

Ha!, yes that's what I usually complain about too. Sorry.

1) This occurred during a large send of about 2000 emails via smtp from a client website located on the same server running IIS v6.0.
The server has 768MB RAM, is 2.6GHZ.
2) Yes, other addresses were sent successfully (about 1600 of the 2k) - about 400 emails came back this way.
3) Windows Server 2003
4) No bandwidth limiters.
5) No anti virus scanners

No problem. I'm really used to it here. :P

What hMailServer version are you using?
Open up a command prompt and run netstat -a and paste the output here.

In 4.0, some users have had problems that outgoing sockets aren't always properly closed. This may have give the problem you're experiencing if you do large sendouts. I've not been able to reproduce it myself but I've located and fixed the problem in 4.1.

I think it's also possible to get this error if you have defined a huge number of delivery threads and don't have a fast internet connection. Have you modified the delivery threads setting?

4.0 - B106
No, I don't think I've modified the delivery threads settings. They are set at 3 right now.
I'm pretty sure the bandwidth isn't the problem. We're inside a pretty significant NOC.
netstat dump here...

Nope. Did you restart the hMailServer service after you got the error? If you just send an email now, does it work then?

Yes, id did restart it. And yes, it works fine now. So, next time, before restarting the hmailserver, I should print the netstart -a results and get them to you?

If you do, I can confirm whether it's the same problem that is solved in hMailServer 4.1. 4.1 will probably be put up as stable in the next few days. Are no reported problems on it..

I'm afraid that I would need what I asked for to be able to say something useful (an output of netstat when it occurs). That log just shows that hMailServer can't connect. :-\

Oh, you're right, sorry.

1) Has this problem occured recently? Or has it "always" been this way?

This happens about 1-2 times every week. In this case, I can only restart the server to restart the smtp queue.

2) Have you tried sending to other addresses?

This happens for every address, every user.

3) What operating system are you using?

Windows 2003 SBS

4) Are you using any bandwidth limiters or monitors, such as NetLimiter?

No.

5) Are you running any "live" anti virus scanner on the computer that monitors network traffic?

Not at all, only ClamWin.

Tell me if you need some other thing.
Thanks a lot.

When the problem occurs, can you do other network related things, such as browsing the web using your web browser? Is it only hMailServer which stops to work or is it all applications?

Can you download LSP-Fix and check which LSP's you have installed?
http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm
(Whatever you do, don't remove any of the installed ones)

Only smtp external queue stop working, but I have some error message in Event Viewer.
I will copy-and-paste soon.
By the way, this machine work only as mail server.

Lsp-fix says: no problems found.

I don't say so, but two problems in the same time... is a bit suspect, mmm?
You don't think that this OS error may cause the hmailserver error?
Or viceversa?

I'm a bit confused...

Did the two problems appear exactly the same time? Was the message reported to the event log the previous time hMailServer SMTP stopped as well? The next time the problem occurs, run TCPview and give us the output from it:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysint ... pView.mspx

Also, it would be good if you opened up the task manager, and check how many handles hMailServer are using.Did

I've got the same problem with Winsock buffers... I have it in 4.3 version, but had it also in the previous..

It happens in not equal intervals, but at least once per week. I recognize it, because sudently i'm receiving less mails than normal (less spam :)

So mail server stops receiving email. I can see also, that RoundCube stops working because of mysql conection problem. Finally some of the network services stop working, because of "no buffer space available".

The server doesn't take more ram this time, hmailserver.exe doesn't have more handles than normal.. And it happens while normal day, not while send some massive mailing... My servers gets around 1k mails a day so it's not overloaded.

To remove the problem i have to restart hMailServer service, and then I have few days of great working server. I think problem is somewhere in hMail and connection closing.

Server OS is Win 2k3 Web Edition

I have been using Win 2k3 Web edition with no such issues. Are you running any anti virus on your server that could be intercepting emails to scan them? How much memory do you have in your machine (I know you said it wasn't an issue but if its less than 1 gig it could well be that it's just running out of memory ) You could try increasing your swap file size although windows should do that anyway when it needs it.

1. I suppose that it's not OS problem
2. Memory isn't a problem.. I've only 380MB of total memory usage !

Today i did my first mass mailing (newstletter to my website users). Around 16k emails and hMail stopped suddenly sending it's queue. I had to restars service and it now sends them again.. But that's not solution for me restarting hmail few days..

I really suppose that there is some problem with connections handling...

Adek,
1) are you running any anti virus scanner on the server?
2) When the problem occurs, how many handles does hMailServer have open? (It's viewable in the task manager)
3) Can you run Microsofts TCPView the next time the problem occurs to check how many sockets hMailServer has open?

I'm far from sure that this is an issue in hMailServer. There's lots of other software and driver issues which can have this effect on hMailServer. I'm not saying that it isn't an hMailServer issue, I'm far from sure. The TCP/IP implementation in hMailServer 4.3 has been rewritten from scratch and now uses a completely different model than before. The fact that you had the problem both in the old version and in the new indicates that the problem is actually outside hMailServer. But as I said, I'm assuming nothing.

I've still got some problems to send my Newsletter... So what i'm doing...

1. hMailServer stopped sending it's queue. I don't know why, but stopped.
2. I'm restarting hMailServer service:

Code: Select all

>net stop hmailserver
The service is not responding to the control function.
More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2186.

>net start hmailserver
The hMailServer service was started successfully.
As you can see, the service doesnt stop normally.. Something goes wrong there, but finally it's stopped so I can run it again.

3. hMailServer starts sending its mail queue... I can see CPU usage, and network usage.. This time hmail Server has 760 - 900 Handles and around 80 threads... As I can see in logs, hMail sent around 1000 emails..

4. After while hmail seems to be stopped.. Resources usage goes down, handles are at 760-800 and Threads at 79... And no mail are send from queue..

CPU Usage:
Image

Net Usage [1%=1Mbps]:
Image

I tried some changes in sending Threading options but it does not solve the problam in any way.

Are there any errors logged in the hMailServer error log?

Did you check in TCPView whether there was an abnormal number of open sockets?

Also, what about the virus scanner? Do you have one active?

I've set hMail performance to use 50 command threads, and 50 delivery threads (there is no difference beetwen this setting and original).

I disabled antivirus spam. IP range of web server has "no spam scan". There are still 10k mails in hmail's output queue but hmail isn't sending them. TCPView looks like that:

What I ment was whether you are running a anti virus software outside hMailServer in the OS? Such as Symantec, NOD32, Kerio or something else?

On this server I have running only those services:
- hMail
- mysqld-nt (mySQL 5)
- named (Bind)
- inetinfo

and some (limited) system services.. no antivirus or firewall in background.. nothing.. system is up-to-date...

Can you telnet hMailServer now? Or is it not responding at all?

If you restart the server now by clicking Stop / Start in hMailServer Administrator, does the delivery start then again?

1. I can telnet it
2. I can connect via POP3 and check for new mails
3. I can connect via SMTP and send mail.. (but it wont be delivered by hMail, even to local account).

I stopped and started it from hMailServer Administrator and hMail delivery started.. but it delivery stopped after 2-3 mins with similar effect as previous.

Below you can see Performance Chart for some counters that can be usefull.. I recorded it since service start till stop delivering... Interval is 5 sec...

Image

As you can see everything goes down sudently (Except Connections Active)

So even though you did not restart the hMailServer service, the delivery started again for some time? Before, did it run for 2-3 minutes before it stopped as well?

Are you routing all outgoing email through the same server, or do you send it directly to the recipients server?

No. I MUST restart service to have delivery working.. And afer restart i't working for 2-3 mins (you can see it on begginign of chart) and then stops.. and the only solution to get it working again is to restart service..

I was trying to wait even a few hours to see if it start delivert by itself.. but it doesnt...

My web server sends all emails to this hMail server.. And it has to send them directly to recipients (I have no SMTP routes specified. I have no SMTP Relayer defined).

I stopped and started it from hMailServer Administrator and hMail delivery started..

When you click stop and start in hMailServer Administrator, you don't restart the hMailServer service. You restart the TCP/IP server which runs inside the hMailServer service. The hMailServer service continues to run even if you click "Stop" in hMailServer Administrator.

Is it possible for me to log on the server remotely (using rdp) and check for myself? I'm not really sure what to look after but sometimes a new pair of eyes find new things to look into? If so, you can send me login info in a PM.

PROBLEM SOLVED

Post by adek » 2006-12-14 21:41

I found the reason of this problem... It's silly stupid...

I recognized that every time i restart hMailServer it sends around 1k of email and suddently stops. I've just connected it to some option in hMailServer.... "Send statistics do hMailServer.com every 1000 message"

I disabled this option, and now hMailServer works GREAT. It already sent 4k emails since restart and is still sending :)

So there was problem to send statisctics to hmailsrver.com and it was reason of stopping the serwer (i think it shouldn't happen).

I've set security policy on server, that doesn't allow any other traffic than pop3, smtp and http to go in/out from server. To browse web pages on server i'm using other proxy server.

So hMail couldn't connect any way to hmailserver.com and was stopping delivery threads.

That sounds good. I'm going to wait a few days before I say "great news" though. ;)

Glad to be able to add another 'perfect-example-of-why-one-should-never-assume-anything-during-troubleshooting' to my already long list. :)

Would appreciate if you could give feedback in a couple of days if it still works. If so, I'll look into why the failure of sending statistics stops the delivery. (There should be a timeout mechanism preventing this)
