554 Rejected - Message containing bare LF's

Postby tomtom76 » 2012-04-05 18:04

Hello!

i am running hmailserver 5.3.3-B1879 on a windows 2008 box.

My problem is that some email senders are rejected with the message "554 Rejected - Message containing bare LF's"
I tried to whitelist the ip adress of the sending server but in the logfiles the messages are deleted. (logfile entry "Deleting message file")

I want to know HOW can accept these mails?

i looked around in the Anti-spam options at Spam test, but i did not find any option for setting of a message rejection.

Many thanks for helping!

best regards
tom

Hey Tom,
Legit email shouldn't end in just LF's. However, if you really want to allow:
http://www.hmailserver.com/documentatio ... otocolsmtp
"Allow incorrectly formatted line endings"
According to the SMTP specification, every line in an email message should be separated by the ASCII-codes 13 and 10. Some spammers sends messages which are not correctly formatted. Use this setting to reject these messages. Please note that legitimate email might have incorrectly formatted line endings, if the sending software contains bugs.

It is under settings-protocols-smtp then rfc compliance tab

many thanks for the answer.

the sender of this mails is a large company and my customer does not want to reject them.

their it-department says that their messages are well formated and this is a bug of windows mail servers :(

Yeah well they can point finger all they want but send them this link:
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2821.txt
refer to section "2.3.7 Lines"
Lines consist of zero or more data
characters terminated by the sequence ASCII character "CR" (hex value
0D) followed immediately by ASCII character "LF" (hex value 0A).

This termination sequence is denoted as <CRLF> in this document.
Conforming implementations MUST NOT recognize or generate any other
character or character sequence as a line terminator. Limits MAY be
imposed on line lengths by servers (see section 4.5.3).

In addition, the appearance of "bare" "CR" or "LF" characters in text
(i.e., either without the other) has a long history of causing
problems in mail implementations and applications that use the mail
system as a tool. SMTP client implementations MUST NOT transmit
these characters except when they are intended as line terminators

and then MUST, as indicated above, transmit them only as a <CRLF>
sequence.

In other words tell em they can go pound sand & stuff it. ;)

Totally 100% agree with Bill on this one. Bare LF's are non RFC compliant and if your IT guys worth anything they would have known that and has sweet FA to do with windows mail servers and is certainly NOT a bug.

It's usually the big guys that don't care and don't do it right either ( Read Apple / Microsoft )
