SMTP Authentication Problem in Netscape 7.1

Several new users are complaining that they can't send mail using Netscape 7.1 (Mail & News.) I've walked through the SMTP server settings to make sure they are correct (they are!)

Here's what shows up in the HMS log:

All the settings in Netscape are fine. How do I fix this problem?

I think that is a bug in hMailServer. :-\

Have you selected "Allow plain text authentication"? Could you try disabling that?

I just tried Netscape 7.2 and there it worked fine.

I'm going to try NS 7.1.

You should also know the I can't send mail using Mozilla Thunderbird (version 1.0.2.) It doesn't seem like Thunderbird gets as far as Netscape did during the connection and authentication phase. Here's the log file output for that:

You'll notice the Thunderbird client doesn't get past the SENT: 250...

I'm using Thunderbird 1.0.2 myself with no problems. The log you posted shows that "allow plaintext authentication is turned on". Try turning that of and try it again with Thunderbird to see if it works.

I can't see a single reason to have "Allow plaintext authentication" turned on...

Will outlook express work with that option disabled?

Yes. Unless you're using OE 1.1 or something like that. If you do a clean installation of hMailServer, "Allow plain text authentication" is turned off.

To disable it, can't I simply go to:

Settings > SMTP > Spam Protection and de-select the "Allow Plain Text Authentication" option?

Yes, correct.

But that will only solve it for Thunderbird.

I've made a change in the code now so that Netscape 7.1 should work fine.

A new build of 3.4.1 will be put up tomorrow (tuesday) that solves this issue.
