Is English your first language?
Just want to know.. I'm asking this since apparently, there are many people that post in their language, or in a... (sorry) terrible English. Not in this forum, but on the other forum I frequent in.
Mine isn't. It's Indonesian. I know my English isn't that good, but at least... it's enough to deliver what I want to say. >_>

Hi!
I am Italian but I also speak English and Romanian.
Well on the IT world, English is absolutely my first language.
See you.

Re: Is English your first language?
Er.. No..
Born in Denmark by danish parents, raised in Bangkok until 5 years old, finished school in Denmark, worked for several international companies the past 20 years and have traveled in 43 countries till now. Lived and worked 3 years in Singapore till 2003 and now running a temp-staff (hospital staff) agency with my wife in Denmark.. I've retired from the IT rat race
So, first languages were Thai (I had a Thai nanny), English (English friends) and Danish (parents). English, German and French languages are mandatory in danish schools. Some Swedish and Norwegian as they are neighboring countries and we used to 0wn them way back in time.. Finally a strain of Singlish (Singapore English), which by the way make people look at you as if you just dropped off the moon
But.. My native tongue is Danish

Last time I visited Sidney, we crossed the coathanger and went to a mate's house for a barbie.. Woke up late, dry as a dead dingo's donger, went for a pommy shower and a brekkie before going to the office

Do aussies generally have counter lunches every day or only when entertaining visitors?
Oh, by the way... When in Australia do NOT call a Cisco Gateway a "rooter" (brittish english pronounciation), use the american spoken "router".. It took a while for me to understand why everyone was laughing..

The only time we don't have counter lunches is when we have liquid lunches. Same venue (the pub), just no food involved.SorenR wrote:Do aussies generally have counter lunches every day or only when entertaining visitors?

PS There is much more to Australia than the town with the coat hanger and sea shells (Sydney)...

Re: Is English your first language?
Hello all.
I am Chinese and English is not my first language. In fact I know English language very well because I am an IT student and there is must have the knowledge of English. Well today in every field English is necessary language. In every interview you have to do communication in only English.
So I can say English is not my first language but English is that first language which is initial in every field.

Nee, ik vind nederlands makkelijker. Maar dat begrijpen niet zoveel mensen hier.
Ein bisschen deutsch sprechen wir auch.
And also a little bit of english.
Good goan is dan weer typisch Twents.

Hope you like the new pair of thongs you traded for your missus but me I would prefer keeping my missus if I had one. Those thongs are too much trouble to wear. Your feet are always slipping off of them.mattg wrote: ↑2009-05-05 16:21G'day mate.

English is not only my first language but practically my only language. I know a few words of Spanish. About enough to go to Mexico at a Resort catering to US Visitors but some workers don't speak English but with the extremely limited words of Spanish I knew for those not well versed with English I could still make myself understood. I took French in Jr. High School and High School but most of it didn't stick. I can still read enough French to be able to many times get the gist of what is being written and can catch some meanings of French phrases.

Yeah, they would.
In the UK, these are thongs (Very difficult to keep on your feet):

(What aussies call 'thongs', we call flipflops).

Re: Is English your first language?
LOL. In the US Marines we called them shower shoes. Things like that stick and when i used that descriptor outside of the Marines i always got funny looks.
We had our own vocabulary. That's for sure.
Re: Is English your first language?
I'd almost bet that because those thongs have the Aussie flag on them, that they are cheap ones made in China.
We have variations of thongs
Those cheap ones are good for a Straya Day Barbie (Australia Day Barbecue) but that's about all.
The 'good' ones are the double pluggers (probably also made in China)
They don't fall apart as much.

I have some (from my time in aus). The weak link is always the toe plug - thats always the first to pop out and trip you up irrespective of the type (especially if you 'kick your toe' on the floor as you walk).

Re: Is English your first language?
In the US the first reference I heard to Thongs were what are now called Flip Flops. This is why I like to sometimes joke with people wearing Flip Flops and tell them 'Oh, I see you are wearing Thongs!'. I refuse to call them Flip Flops because to me they are really Thongs.jimimaseye wrote: ↑2019-03-27 10:12Yeah, they would.

Re: Is English your first language?
Google says

Anyways, to most of us flip-flops are harmless, to the arabic world they can be lethal. It's an insult to display the sole of your shoe/sandal thus sitting with crossed legs (ankle over knee) is a no-go and hitting someone with a sandal is like old days challenging someone to a duel by whiping a white glove across the oponents face. Not everyone around the world calls them "flip-flops," though. In New Zealand, they're called "jandals" (short for Japanese sandals). They're "thongs" in Australia and "plakkies" in South Africa.

Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home
But there's booze in the blender
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on
