hey, I've got an odd problem that I have been trying to fix for about a week now, I've even talked to professional Mail server administrators, but with no luck.

I'll describe my problem, and I hope that someone can help. At your request I will give you any additional information.

I have recently added an MX record into my DNS records, and if you do a whois or mx lookup for "tensioncore.com" you will get that the mx record shows as necessary: mail.tensioncore.com.

I have set up all necessary email accounts, admin@mail.tensioncore.com...etc.

now The one thing We are unsure about is that if we should be using what the MX record reflects...that being "mail.tensioncore.com" or just admin@"tensioncore.com"....now my colleague said that it would not make any difference...or shouldn't.

In the hMailServer Administration I have a Domain as "mail.tensioncore.com" and all email addresses have that as the domain.

I'm using all standard ports for email (25, 110, 143), and YES our ISP has those ports open for our use, as we have an expensive Business Internet account.

I have Multihoming set to listen on all TCP/IP Addresses, and I have tried to set it to listen only on 2, those being 70.71.0.134, and 192.168.1.100(local Static IP). The IP ranges are 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.255, and the internet standard of all IP's

Now, I have one SMTP route set up, although I'm unsure if it is necessary.



To conclude the problem, I can successfully send emails to anyone via the email addresses "@mail.tensioncore.com", BUT, cannot receive ANY emails from any other address.

if your domain name is tensioncore.com you should have tensioncore.com set as the domain in hmail and all address should be @tensioncore.com

What is your SMTP route set as and why do you think you need it?

well, I have not worked with email servers in the past, and I thought this a necessary thing to have filled out....so do you think, that if I change the "mail.tensioncore.com" to "tensioncore.com"? even though the mx record reflects "mail.tensioncore.com"?

Edit:
Also, in the Protocol settings for SMTP, should the "Host name" as well be tensioncore.com? or mail.tensioncore.com?

1) In hMailServer, add the domain tensioncore.com
2) In the DNS, add an MX record for the domain tensioncore.com with the name mail.tensioncore.com which points at the IP address of the computer where hMailServer is running.
3) The host name in the SMTP configuration should be the host name of the computer where hMailServer is running, which I'm guessing is mail.tensioncore.com.

You might want to read the documentation the next time you run into a problem, before spending a week on trying to fix it and consult your collegues. :)

I can't telnet you on port 25

Are you sure that port 25 is open and that your mailserver is running?

I've just checked your dns and there is a problem

Domain tensioncore.com has only one mail-server
Checking mail server (PRI=10) mail.tensioncore.com [70.71.0.134]
Error connecting to mail server mail.tensioncore.com [70.71.0.134] port 25 : timed out waiting for connection
Some of your MX do not work properly

As Mattg said, have you got port 25 forwarded on if you have a firewall etc?

yes I do have port forwarding on for port 25, I can connect locally and send outgoing email to and from the server itself, via port 25, but I cannot receive anything from external server, and yeah I get the same error too. I don't know what to do

Check that your rouuter/firewall is forwarding from port 25 to your server.

I've got the port forwarding on, which means from the router to the server, the firewall is a server firewall, so it has this already as well

Then your ISP must be blocking port 25. you should contact them.

What about software firewall? Have you made an exception for Port 25 in your windows firewall?

No, I contacted my ISP already
I have a Business Internet Connection, there are no closed ports, or exceptions to what I can do with my service.

and yes Windows Firewall is configured


man this is messed.
I'm jsut going to get my DNS entry for the email server changed so its only "tensioncore.com" not "mail.tensioncore.com"
that way this might be easier to figure out

i had some weird email problems and traced it to my adsl modem/nat firewall had dropped the fwd ports 25 and 110! amazing some email came through and yet it wouldnt go through assp but intermittently some arrived in hmailserver but with very basic headers and not the assp headers i expected. I changed and reinstalled everything till checking the adsl firewall only to discover the dropped rules! BUgger.

Well there is something between the internet and hmail that is blocking port 25 or hMail is not listening on port 25

This will show you which of your ports are open to the internet.

Definately use shields up, it really helped me when i was trying to work out if port 25 is open for an exchange 2007 box

You mentioned you're multi-homing this server. Can you describe this more detailed? I suspect that your problem lies there.
