Code: 10053, Message: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine

Post by otronics » 2020-05-27 17:09

I've been using hMailServer for years and suddenly all mail has stopped sending.

I never use it to receive email.

My set-up hasn't changed. I've tried disabling my firewall and AV software - no difference.

Logs and diagnostics are below.

Code: Select all

Something is wrong with your dns. Mxtoolbox also reports "Problem getting IP Address for server.otronics.co.uk".

-OR-

Maybe you've always had your DNS set up this way (you said you send only) but recipients are only now starting to reject due to MX not matching.

Either way, fix your dns. Your sender reputation depends on it.

Use your Ip address PTR as hostname, if 217.160.231.117 is your ip use clienthosting.eu as hostname setting under SMTP hmailserver

It surprise me you say you never had problems using this setup, i would reject it instantly

Hello.

Thanks for the replies.

server.otronics isn't a 'real' domain. It's the domain I have created on hMailServer.

I was under the impression hMailServer was self-contained and you didn't need 'real' domains for it to work. Am I wrong?

you only need real domains if you you are interacting with the rest of the world

if your hmailserver is completely isolated then no real domain needed

if you intend to send or receive mail to the world, then you need to play by the rules, and that includes a real domain
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

OK. So how has it worked for years up until now?!

How do I correct this DNS problem....ie/ what setting do I need to change etc?

Thank you.

Trouble reading?
I would start with what i told you above, otronics.co.uk resolves to 217.160.231.117, if 217.160.231.117 is really you i would set hostname same as PTR, eg:

✔️

You could also use otronics.co.uk, HELO needs to resolve to a at least a valid A-record, but that said... clienthosting.eu is safer as some mailserver/spamchecker also check PTR records

This has not worked.

I've looked into my domain package and I have set-up an email server there.

Same issue though.

I'm obviously missing something.

the reason why you cant resolve MAIL.otronics.co.uk is because that record has NO IP ( or i should write there is NO mail.otronics.co.uk in DNS )

the record : otronics.co.uk = 217.160.231.117 exists in DNS

so either you add "217.160.231.117 IN A MAIL.otronics.co.uk" in your DNS
or you configure your server to respond to otronics.co.uk

Am I adding this line onto my hosting/email provider DNS (who are 1&1)?

the reason why you cant resolve MAIL.otronics.co.uk is because that record has NO IP ( or i should write there is NO mail.otronics.co.uk in DNS )

the record : otronics.co.uk = 217.160.231.117 exists in DNS

so either you add "217.160.231.117 IN A MAIL.otronics.co.uk" in your DNS
or you configure your server to respond to otronics.co.uk
Am I adding this line onto my hosting/email provider DNS (who are 1&1)?
the provider that handles the DNS for your zone otronics.co.uk ( propabally 1&1, or do you buy DNS service from someone else ? )

Yes - 1&1 look after my DNS.

Can't get it to work though.

How do I do the other option: "configure your server to respond to otronics.co.uk"?

DNS record created but hMailServer isn't working.

217.160.231.117 doesn't connect but 1&1's MX server does (mx00.1and1.co.uk)

You'll see the MX record error below.

Turns out my domain/DNS is registered with 1&1 and my hosting is with someone else, so mail.otronics.co.uk isn't correct so can be ignored.

that output does not resemble anything you put on here before... are you just changing settings as you go along ??

what does your SMTP log actually say now regarding sending ?

In the diagnostic test section leave the domain hmailserver.com

Your hostname is

Settings >> protocols >> SMTP >> Delivery of email >> Local host name
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

Hello.

I guess you meant to change the local host name back to blank.

With no domain selected in diagnostics, it works:
Test: Collect server details
hMailServer version: hMailServer 5.6.7-B2425
Database type: MSSQL Compact

Test: Test IPv6
IPv6 support is available in operating system.

Test: Test outbound port
SMTP relayer not in use. Attempting mail.hmailserver.com:25...
Trying to connect to host mail.hmailserver.com...
Trying to connect to TCP/IP address 5.189.183.138 on port 25.
Received: 220 mail.hmailserver.com ESMTP.
Connected successfully.

Test: Test backup directory
Backup directory C:\Program Files (x86)\hMailServer\Backup is writable.

Test: Test message file locations
Relative message paths are stored in the database for all messages.

Test: Test IP range configuration
No problems were found in the IP range configuration.

With my syncback.otronics I have created in hMailServer, this is the result:
Test: Collect server details
hMailServer version: hMailServer 5.6.7-B2425
Database type: MSSQL Compact

Test: Test IPv6
IPv6 support is available in operating system.

Test: Test outbound port
SMTP relayer not in use. Attempting mail.hmailserver.com:25...

Trying to connect to TCP/IP address 5.189.183.138 on port 25.
Received: 220 mail.hmailserver.com ESMTP.
Connected successfully.

Test: Test backup directory
Backup directory C:\Program Files (x86)\hMailServer\Backup is writable.

Test: Test MX records
Trying to resolve MX records for syncback.otronics...
ERROR: MX records for domain syncback.otronics could not be resolved

Test: Test local connect
Connecting to TCP/IP address in MX records for local domain domain syncback.otronics...
ERROR: MX records for local domain syncback.otronics could not be resolved

Test: Test message file locations

Really don't know what you are doing anymore.... you had one simple thing to do
In the first post you stated you never use the hmailserver to receive mail and sorely use it to send mail, why are you so damn persistent to get the diagnostic test to work? (The 'Test MX records' Test is to verify you can receive mail, and guess what...you don't use that!!!)

No one has told me about how MX records work until now. I am a beginner.

I assumed 'diagnostics' would be a good place to start to get things working.

I want to send email from my PC to the outside world.

What is this one simple thing I have to do to make it work?

hMailServer was easy to set-up, worked for years and then stopped as we've described and established above.

Yes - there is some kind of DNS issue and I have tried everything above to fix it. How do I fix it?

You must be bullshitin me, right?

You identify yourself as 'SERVER' to the outside world, it's a bit hard to get working DNS for something that is not a FQDN...still with me so far?

Therefor I told you (multiple times now) to change your hostname under SMTP settings, and this time not invent another name, but use a name that actually resolves to your ip address! syncback.otronics resolves to nothing, just like 'SERVER'

You have to change hostname to what it says in the error "cpc123802-trow7-2-0-cust96.18-1.cable.virginm.net"
or ask your ISP to change there dns to your hostname.

Hello.

I guess you meant to change the local host name back to blank.
No, I did not mean that. I meant what I wrote

I meant that field NEEDS to have the FQDN name placed there

EXACTLY what RvdH has been saying all thread
You have to change hostname to what it says in the error "cpc123802-trow7-2-0-cust96.18-1.cable.virginm.net"
or ask your ISP to change there dns to your hostname.
Ah, yes thats it, nice catch! Missed that piece and the OP never gave answer to and if 217.160.231.117 was the ip actually mailing from
CIDR to RegEx: d-fault.nl/CIDRtoRegEx
DNS Lookup: d-fault.nl/DNSTools
DNSBL Lookup: d-fault.nl/DNSBLLookup
GEOIP Lookup: d-fault.nl/GeoipLookup

Thanks.
