HOWTO: Install HMS 5.3 / 5.4 on Server 2008 R2 Core

Post by prisma » 2011-01-24 15:14

Notice: Not officially supported, but possible and (from my point of view) stable.
All you need is .net 2.0 32-bit support on R2 core. For this you have to type at command prompt:

Code: Select all

Start /w ocsetup ServerCore-WOW64
Start /w ocsetup NetFx2-ServerCore-WOW64
After that you're able to install hmailserver. Ignore install errors of IE6, the setup tries this because of .net 2.0. You already installed that, so...
Some buttons within the localhost server administrator using explorer views etc. won't work, but you'll get over this. Remotely administered you'll notice no difference between core or no-core.

For setting DCOM permissions for webadmin by command line see http://hmailserver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=18679

LOL bummer! Well you'd need to find ie6setup.exe (or perhaps use different EXE that you rename that way) and edit your HOSTS file so that download.microsoft.com points to a web server you control (perhaps even one on your own computer) and put the EXE in a path that matches that URL.. That's probably how I'd defeat it! :D

Nice idea, that'd certainly work. Another thing you can try is installing .net framework. That has solved this issue for others in the past.
If at first you don't succeed, bomb disposal probably isn't for you! ヅ

Ahhhh sneaky microsoft but i guess necessary when you think about it. You could do it at a DNS Level by installing a local DNS server and adding microsofts domain to it then setting it to 127.0.0.1 then set your pc to use your local copy of DNS server.

Since when? Perhaps if you have Windows defender running but I've done it many times.. Or as DooM said use DNS over-ride. Many routes such as dd-wrt let you do it in them easily.

I did the above installation a while in the past with 5.3.2 B1769. The setup seemed to do not check whether .NET 2.0 is installed or not, and showed the download dialogue anyway. Can't say how the behaviour of a current setup routine is. I can only say, at that time I mailed Martin that this was an improvable behaviour. I have nothing heard in return.

If you currently have to patch your hosts file because microsoft deleted the resource, this sounds much more horrible than at that time and has to be improved more than ever...

Wow, my search fu is really off lately. I completely missed this thread and seaching didn't reveal it.

To bypass the IE 6 issue, just add a "Version" registry entry:

Code: Select all

reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer" /v Version /t REG_SZ /d 8.0.7601.17514
(My other post said REG_MULTI_SZ but it should be REG_SZ and I can't edit it.)
