Anti virus software?

Post by martin » 2005-01-27 13:48

Anyone has a tip on some good anti virus software? I'm currently using Norton AntiVirus 2003 on my machines but I don't like it. It lags down the computer pretty much, and has a bug in it's TCP/IP-component that makes Apache give timeout quite often. (That's why you sometimes get "Page cannot be loaded" when browsing on hmailserver.com)

I would run it on the machine running http://www.hmailserver.com and on one other computer. Both are running WinXP SP2.

I use the anti-virus solution from avast and i'm pleased with it. You can download a free edition at http://www.avast.com.
hmailserver 4.3 (242 Live)
hmailserver 5.0 (605 Test)
Windows 2003
MSSQL
ASSP 1.3.2
ClamAV (SOSDG)

I tried Avast, didn't really like it. Now I'm using AVG Free; it's pretty good. You can get it at http://www.grisoft.com.

I highly recommend CA's eTrust Antivirus. It's a very efficient and resource-friendly application -- you don't even notice it running (unless, of course, it detects something). It uses two scanning engines, has won numerous awards for detecting 100% of “in-the-wild” viruses, and is ICSA and West Coast Labs certified. Also, there are no fees or subscriptions for signature updates.

I am using F-Secure AntiVirus Client Security Corporate edition, its light, it contains a firewall and antivirus, auto-update, e-mail scanning, imap scanning basically everything you need no overbloated junk like norton has and basically works great, really a reccomendation.

I think (correct me if I am wrong) that clam does not perform "on-access" scanning. Therefore, it is not a good solution for an end user (but it is good for a server).
I use Norton 2004 at work and I like it (does not slow down my computer, not that I can notice anyway). I install AVast for my friends, and it seems to do the job quite well. I used to use AVG, but the GUI was really ugly and buggy. Maybe the latest version has corrected this though.

edit : If you are not looking for a free solution, I think that Kaspersky's solution has been winning all the antivirus-contests for some time now.

Uhm, ClamAV could also protect your computer. Why didn't you use that (bad grammar)? ;)

As Bingo says, ClamAV doesn't offer "on-access" scanning. Once nice thing in Norton is that it automatically scan the files you try to run and files you open.

I am using two AV products at home. My workstations and one laptop (all P-III or IV with WinXP-SP2) are running Kaspersky AntiVirus Personal Pro v5 (which runs MUCH better than the previous Version 4.x)
Some older Win2k/98 machines, and the machines I reinstall for friends/family/etc all get Grisofts free antivirus. I was looking for server AV until I ran into Clamwin here. Seems to do the trick, at least till I find something better.

Another vote for AVG here.

Post by kblood » 2005-05-03 17:29

Free or non-free. Though I don't really recommend the email scanner plugin for a server installation, it only gives headaches. For a standard user, it works well.

Easy to integrate in hMailserver by using the command-line version, and version 7 has improved a lot.

It's my choice when I configure friends' computers. Left Norton for it, and have never looked back.

I also tried Avast, but in the system I tried it, found AVG to be lighter in resources, but that was just my experience, it also seemed a good product.

I use ClamAV (100% free) with hmailserver at home on Windows 2000 server and at work with postfix on linux. ClamAV is a server side scanner, never designed for clients.

We have ~ 3,500 accounts (at work) and get ~ 50,000 (weekend) to 500,000 (mon-fri) per day all of which does through ClamAV with 100% hitrate (been running for 3 yrs, not bad for free). We have ~ 10,000 hits on the sober.o/p when it came out with 0 getting to the clients. I have 6 accounts at home and have just as equal success (a lot less email though :-) ) I use the SOSDG version on my windows box, seems to be better optomized than ClamWin.

As far as clients, everything sucks.. Symantec/Norton use a crap load of memory (version 10/2005 is only getting worse) McAfee is a little better, but they seem to have update issues, releasing AV updates 1/2 a day late (symantec is even worse). SOPHOS is the best that I have seen, but like most of the really good ones for clients, it requires money (AV updates are free).

Anyway good luck on your search. :-)

I'm trying NOD32 right now and it looks extremly good compared to Norton Antivirus 2004.

It's user interface is much nicer to work with. It's much faster than Norton Antivirus 2004 and contains less useless special effects...

(In fact, Norton Antivirus 2004 was so buggy on my machine it couldn't even remove hMailServer .eml-files containing the eicar test virus. It couldn't even qurantine.)

Also, this page was really fun reading even if it's a bit outdated:

I use AVG professional and is everything ok.
AVG free is also ok but I think it does not permit to exclude path from scanning (i.e. the hmailserver folder) but it could be installed without AVG resident shield.

I use ClamAV to intergrate with hMailServer, and Symantec v10 Corp for network scanning (I'm a sucker for Symantec). Never missed a beat for me. :D

Symantecs home solutions suck but their corp stuff is actually very very good.

I agree.

I wouldn't use any other. I have numerous clients' networks protected by Symantec v10 Corp, and I never have to do any maintenance on them.

I do side with Martin (first post) though, Symantec (Home and Corp) are very resource-hungry.

Not as bad as a 1 GB memory leak in MSSQL2005 mind you...

I use Kaspersky (AV only) and i'm very, very, very pleased with it.
It's light and doesn't consumes lot of resources, like norton does.
I've never used NOD32, but it would be my second choice.
Take a look at the following link:
