Thunderbird ReWrite ahead (in JavaScript!)

Postby Dravion » 2018-01-03 04:16

I just finished listening to Bryan Lundun Youtube Vlog about Techstuff. In this Episode the Thunderbird Community Manager of the new TB Team describes Thunderbirds Future and what they are planning to do...

The worst thing first:
The Team is planning to rewrite the entire fucking
Thunderbird App using Electron, a Javascript Framework. It needs a Standalone Webbrowser like Chrome to tun on top of it packaged as Windows Standard EXE.

In short terms. If you install the Thunderbird Electronversiin its basicly a Webmail packaged into a EXE with integrated Webbrowser.

Yeah, but why in the World needs Thunderbird an Application Webplatform?
Why isnt it possible today to simply write a Email Client Program which just does the Job in C/C++ like the most
Windows Programs do?

Even the amout of RAM will explode if it relies on JavaScript Electron, and it needs to have a complete Webbrowser
like Chrome embedded to do its job. I see Discord, a Voice Chatt App which is verry popular theese days. Its built
on the same Framework and it needs more then 100 MBytes in RAM in IDLE Mode (doing nothing).

Anyhow: This ReWrite Project is a complete new Program. Maybe the Name is Thuderbird but its a complete
diffrent thing. In the notes they claiming "it will be the same" - but seriously: Its a diffrent App, written new
from scratch how can this be the same?

So what are reasonable alternatives?

I can't seem to find one I like better or as well as Thunderbird currently behaves...Except perhaps Outlook, except that Outlook doesn't play well with servers other than Exchange.
Roundcube is OK, but I can only load one account at a time (unless I'm missing something). In Thunderbird I have more than a dozen accounts, and that suits the way that I work.
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

Sylpheed is maybe an alternative
https://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/en/

Or a fork of Sylpheed called ClawsMail

Or Postbox a Thunderbird Fork which will not mutate into a WebApp inside a Exe

Or EM-Client a modern Email Client for Windows which also supports Gmail oAuth and MS-Exchange servers

+1 for both. i use them for admin works such as company wide spamfolder browsing, redirecting false positives etc... lightning fast in loading and operation, particularly Sylpheed is rock solid. but can't say they can be a full substitute to TB (with all it's extensions i mean)..
