Sending to Alias returns 550 5.1.1

Post by dlee5400 » 2019-03-18 23:42

I noticed after my update to 5.6.7-B2425 that all of my domain's aliases have stop working. When I send an email from gmail to the hMailServer alias it bounces back with "550 5.1.1 <email@domain.com>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual mailbox table"

I have tested all of my aliases on various domains and all are not working. What am I missing?

Thanks,
David

That doesn't look like a hmailserver rejection code - as far as i know hms doesn't issue 5.1.1 sub codes.
Yey to send one I and pay the resultant SMTPC log file entries showing the session issuing the rejection.

This is the complete message from gMail:

The response from the remote server was:
550 5.1.1 <support@domain.com>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual mailbox table

I looked in my logs and i don't see any interaction dealing with the 550 code or the email being sent.

Therefore as i suggested these emails are not going to your hmailserver. More likely a dns issue for your domain.
Anyway run this and post the results: https://www.hmailserver.com/forum/viewt ... 0&t=30914- let's check things.

I looked in my logs and i don't see any interaction dealing with the 550 code or the email being sent.
Err.....

Code: Select all

Logging Enabled: False
No logging, no logs.

Also :
I have tested all of my aliases on various domains and all are not working. What am I missing?
you only have domain 2 and domain 4 enabled (and neither of them have aliases I them. )

I turn the logs on when I am trouble shooting. After I tried to send to the alias I turned the logs back off.

No point. It won't make any difference.

1, white listing only refers to spam checking (not mailbox or connections)
2, the mail isn't reaching your box in the first place and
3, you already have

I thought this posted but domain2 and 4 are the two I need working. And they both have aliases listed but in your tool I don't see the aliases. (did that post?)

Show screen shot of the aliases being associated to domain 2 and 4. (The script isn't wrong usually).

would the return header tell me who is giving that error to gmail or outlook.com? I looked in those return email headers but don't see anything from my server listed. So how is it that my server isn't send the rejection? Or listing in the logs that it is having a conversation with gmail and rejecting the request?

Those are account aliases, not domain 'names'

The script picks up domain 'names'.
Those aliases should be treated exactly the same as normal accounts on those domains.

again, that error message isn't a hMailserver error message

Are you sending from your gmail account directly to the alias?

enable all logging
send to a 'normal account' on your hmailserver from a gmail account
ALSO send to an 'alias account' (same domain) on your hmailserver from a gmail account

Wait until you get an error in gmail, or at least 90 seconds, and then post ALL logs created

Not only are those account aliases and not Domain alias/names (as Mattg has already pointed out), they are against domain 1 and domain 3 which, we have already identified, are disabled. What's the point. (Remember you were trying to suggest that my script was incorrect and me asking for proof of there being domain aliases).

Your report and responses are just inconsistent and have not yet proven there to be a problem with hmailserver that can only be explained as a misconfiguration of DNS or misunderstanding on your own part on what you are doing.

Are you sure your initial problem is :
When I send an email from gmail to the hMailServer....
and not the other way round?

I don't think that is correct

The account aliases are under domains that start with D and M, which from the diagnostic report are domains 2 and 4
Also, in the initial post the OP does say

...my domain's aliases have stop working.
Which is NOT Domain aliases (or Domain Names) as they are called in hMailserver.
I think there has just been a misunderstanding.

Domains 1 & 3 in the diagnostics do have Domain Names (Domain Aliases in the diagnostic report), but these domains aren't active as you point out.

Lets do this...

Hmmmm. Need to test. I thought the script listed the domains in the order they appear in the domain list.

Always alphabetical I think, not in the order created (which is the same for me in the admin GUI)

ALSO I suspect that the screen shot just shows from the second domain

Hi All, back at this again. @jimimaseye I am certainly not suggesting your script is wrong. Sorry that came across that way, I looked in hMailServer this morning and saw the tab "NAMES" under the domain and now understand about domain aliases. When I used the term I thought hMailServer had only one references to aliases. Yes these are account aliases not domain aliases. Secondly, there are 5 domains with only two enabled, 2 - D...x.com and 4 m...r.com according to your script, and yes I cut off the others upon screen snipping.

I will run the test as requested and post the outcome here today.

Thank you all for helping.

Always alphabetical I think, not in the order created (which is the same for me in the admin GUI)

ALSO I suspect that the screen shot just shows from the second domain
Ah good. I always thought they appeared in the same order as the gui. Thanks for confirming.

No worries. (I was quietly confident anyway).

How do i put the logs in this system? I am getting :

Your message contains 337122 characters.
The maximum number of allowed characters is 60000.

when i copy and paste it, also it doesn't accept .txt files when I try to do an attachment

Attach as a zip file.

You only need application and SMTP logging. Your logs will then also be a lot smaller.

Ok, sent email from my gmail account to c..s@m...r.com (domain 4 on script) and to alias m..g@m...r.com (domain 4 on script): here is what the logs captured.

Correct, the accounts deliver fine, its the account aliases that bounce back. (I guess the question now is do I understand the purpose of an account alias?) I thought those allowed me to send to an alias vs setting up an account for said email address.

Thanks,
David

Sending an email in to an address that is set as an account alias effectively just does a forwarding to whatever address you have set in the account alias.

Sending an email in to a domain name alias address will result in it begging delivered locally in to the inbox of the main domain.

Maybe you have an account alias forwarding to an email address that is, for example, TO:myhomeaddress@gmail.com . However this may well get bounced if the original inbound external email was from gmail as your hms server is NOT a permitted sender of gmail emails (it would be attempting to send an email From: external@gmail.com To: myhomeaddress@gmail.com).

How do you receive mail?
!! No SMTP Port 25 defined. Direct external SMTP inbound not possible !!
Have you a front end server that sends the error:
550 5.1.1 <support@domain.com>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual mailbox table

Then the aliases must exist on that server to or it must use catch-all.

This server is only routing the two domains. The gmail account is only for testing outside of my network due to internal routing by the hMailServer. The account alias actually routes from an account such as marketing@domain.com to my dlee@domain.com.

As to SMTP 25 I use other ports to receive emails. Is it a requirement to have 25 opened?

Thanks,
David

Hi @ tunis, I opened port 25 and got the same results as before. So I'm satisfied that its not a port issue.

Ok all this is my walk of shame. I use a service that filters domain level spam out before it hits my server. I usually can add a user to my accounts etc. with out it interfering in the process. BUT (head looking at ground) they upgrade the service to catch these types of activities (adding a new email account). Thus they where blocking the email at their level. I just have to login to their service and add to my approved list and all is well.

Sorry for the energy waisted running this down.

And thanks for the help you all provide to folks like me!!!

There you go. As expected, in the first reply, this wasn't a hms rejection.

Good job and glad you've figured it out. (I bet you won't fall in to this trap again. )

Thanks for the update .

@David,

now that all is fine again, i'd suggest you revise your whitelisting policy.
if what is seen is not for testing only, you have whitelisted about half of the world :D
