hmail Server trouble since 1 week

Post by PeterP » 2018-11-22 14:53

hello guys,

i have inherited a hmail Server which is on a Server 2008 R2 and use a SQL database.

It is only used as "IMAP Share", which is used with Outlook 2016 Client, this means there are created a Domain with accounts >100 which does not communicate with other Services. It only provide the Mailbox, which the users interate in Outlook and fill with data..

now, since 1 week the users are claiming that suddenly all mails are not visible any more and that the sync off hmail seems to be interrupted.

When i check the loggs, i see that it created suddenly dumps since few days and that it has ERROR_hmailserver_logs nearly every day ;(

Can somehow help where to start from and how i am able to fix the Problems. thanks in advance !

After taking a look, there are
"ERROR" 2360 "2018-11-22 06:51:09.447"
"Severity: 2 (High), Code: HM4208, Source: File::ReadFile(), Description: An error occured when reading file., Message: bad allocation"

Bad allocation is Virtual Memory related. Plain and simple, your RAM Memory Modules (Hardware) are faulty and needs to be replaced.
Its not clear which Memory Module is fault, so you can check it by trial and error, but this will cost time and effort or you just replace
it simply by brand new modules.

But: Test your RAM Modules, even if they are new, they can allready be faulty. New isnt a gurantee and i had seen a few Modules
which where faulty fresh from the shop and you noticed it only if you use Apps which needs more Memory.

the RAM Modules seems to be okay, no error detected ;( I will try an other RAM test Software to verify.

I just look and see following Errors, couls it be the Harddisk? Would a checkdisk help?

In this log, there a bad alloc again. We need to get rid of your RAM Memmory Module Problems first.

I highly recommend using Memtedt86+
https://www.memtest86.com/download.htm

Burn it to a DVD and boot from it.
Dont use RAM Module Testsoftware which runs on top of Windows because it cannot test blocks occupied by Windows.

Ok, delete your old hMailServer logs and provide new hMailServer logs (after your checked and replaced the RAM Modules
and attach it to your next repllx. Also attach your latest crahsdump (*.dmp) file of hMailSerever.

We also need to know your excat Mainboard Info (Serialnumber, Brand and Modelname), the Name and serial Number of your
installed RAM Modules (if you have mixed RAM Modules from various Manufacturers) add the Infos to it.

Please provide a few infos about the Antimaleware Software your are using (Name, if its a free version, ect) and
what version of Windows your are running (for example Windows 10 1803 x64 or Windows Server 2016 ect).

thanks Davion for your help.

I will take the Server offline today and clone the HDDisk. Somehow i see in the logs "An unknown error occurred while reading file from disk" and i hope the new disk fixes the Problems..

The Hardware is running since several years and as i already told i changed the memory modules, where no error was found with memtest86.

Dear all,

in my opinion the issue mentioned in this post by PeterP is not an hardware error. I've encountered the same and posted here viewtopic.php?f=7&t=32554. Still having the same problem when a new "Outlook 2016" client connects and starts to download imap mail. No other client cause this error.

I tested the memory by memtest, I changed them with new ones, I've changed the drive, I even tried on a completely different server. But the same read file and bad allocation errors keep happening when a new outlook client initiates an imap download.

I believe dev team should look into this closer...

Thanks!

Hmm, ok.
Please add your latest DMP and logs files.

What hMailServer version exactly do you run and does this only happen durning Outlook IMAP
Operations?

Do you have shared Mailboxes where multiple Users
accessing the Mailbox the same time?

Ps. if this Situation persist, would it be possible to remotely login via Teamviewer to the faulty hMailServer Machine? Maybe we need to run your hMailServer Installation in the Dev Enviroment in Debuggingmode to find out which Instruction exactly causes your Access Violation.

Ok, i checked your Crahsdumps with in the Debugger

Do you really run this hMailServer for all your 100 Mailboxes on Windows 7 SP1? (see: BUILDLAB_STR: win7sp1_gdr)

Summary
The Error occurs while executing the C++ new() operator from the MS CRuntime (see: msvcr120.dll!operator_new)

The new command in C++ is used to allocated Virtual Memory (in lame mans term, Memory) which fails because the
command cannot execute successfully. In general, if a Program cannot reserve Memory it cannot funtioning correctly,
it will simply crash. The Dumpfile isnt created by hMailServer itself, the Programcrash is noticed by the Windows Kernel
which executes WERFAULT.EXE in Windows System Directory to dump relavant Memory state into the DMP Crashump file.

In most cases, this type of Error is caused by faulty Hardware (like RAM Memory Modules) but isnt restricted to it.
Windows (like any modern Operating System) uses a Memory Managementdesign which is called "Virtual Memory".
The cool thing about it is, any Program has its own, isolated RAM Area without interferend Programs which can cause
Problems. Virtual Memory on the other side isnt restricted to RAM Chips, its also takes advandage of your Harddisk/SSD
in an File (for example: C:\Pagefile.sys) which simply can be used if you running out of RAM Memmory space for your App
and its called "swapping". Of cause Harddisks and SSD's are way slower and thats why you should use lots of RAM and
a OS which can handle lots of RAM:

Conclusion
If your REALLY and CAREFULLY tested your RAM Modules, next is check your Harddisk/SSD and disable
Windows swapping to C:\Pagefile.sys.Next update your OS to the latest Servicepack+Updates and Device drivers
(espacially Chipsetdrivers) and lookup if your Mainboard needs some BIOS or UEFI-Firmware updates.

thanks Dravion for your Information.

The OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 .

Now i replaced the HDD to SSD and the error (minidumps, similar error log files..) seems still to be there ;(

After the 16GB RAM was checked and replaced the hdd also did not fix the issue .. .

With the change of the hdd i also changed the pagefile.sys location, means it was created new..

Should i disable the Pagefile.sys completely anyway to see if that helps?

Yes, please do so and look carefully at the new logfiles. Try also to update your drivers (i highly recommend snappy, its opensource and finds allmost any new driver). Its User interface is a bit hacky, but its free and works. Use the Lite Installer, click download indexes only and select "This PC" to avoid downloading the fulll 14 GBytes.

thanks davion for your help,

disabling the swap did not solve the problems.

I am not able to renew all drivers from this "old" Hardware which runs the last 4-5 years without any problems.. I get in trouble when it comes to bigger problems afterwards. there are more that 500Gb data on hmail ;(..

I have to look how this old machine can be backed up first.

Is there any maintance which i can do through the hmail data, perhaps there is some corruptness on it.

PeteP, what version of hMailserver are you running?

This looks like an old issue with a race condition that appeared suddenly many many versions ago

Ok Pete,

Take into account (like Matt allready) said, it could be a older hMailServer Error. Unless you are running versio 5.3 or ealier,
your should upgrade to the latest, official Production release - which is today: hMailServer 5.6.7 - Build 2425

Download it from:
https://www.hmailserver.com/download

Updating is verry simple. Just run the installer and you will be fine.

Of course, you should backup your hMailServer installation.

Backupprocedures:
* Your DATA-Folder (default location is: C:\Program Files (x86)\hMailServer\Data)
-> It contains any Email your ever send our receiced with hMailServer as a bunch single, independent *.eml files
* Backup the Database, which hMailServer is connected to (can be MS-SQL CE, MS-SQL, MySQL/MariaDB or PostgreSQL)
-> You should backup and restore it with the Backup/Restore tools of your SQL-Database

For smaller Installations, we recommend the internal hMailServer Backupsystem, but its not made to handle 500 GBytes
of Inbox Data.

Jimmie wrote a nice Tutorial regarding backup, take a look at it

it is the Version 5.6.7-B2425 ;(

perhaps i should reinstall it over the night?no Settings will be deleted or?

i checked all the Settings from the hmail Server twice and try to understand them.

Our Setting is quit easy we have 3 Domains with around 400 accounts. Around 100 accounts are only active. several of theses accounts are >30Gb.

thhe hole accouts are only used as imap storage box, there is no connection to any domain. the boxes are added to Outlook Client and the customers are moving there mails in that .

there are few Settings which are not clear for me , but i am little careful about changing them for testing, like disbling cache in the Performance tap and threading Settings.. whatever perhaps there are some advises which Settings are useful for our set up and which not..

thanks jimimaseye,

attached you will find the diagnostic.

The Database was on an other machine with SQL EXPRESS 2014.
I changed the machine and the database is now on an SQL EXPRESS2017. Somewhere i read this could also be the reason for my troubles..

thanks in advanced

on the ip ranges page there is a 'default' button - push that (You currently have two IP ranges covering the same internet range that will allow your machine be used to send spam to the world...

Also, there are some errors present in your error's log
Can you post the contents of that log

I'd also look your database and fix the paths as you have a custom path and some messages at least that have full paths stored for them in the database. There is likely a heap of messages that your hmailserver can't find due to the data folder change

thanks mattg for your help!

the crashes are the logs witch i provided in the post at the beginning. i have still the same Problems as before, also after updating and moving the SQL database database and changing the RAM and HD from the Server..

perhaps your mentioned changes are also a reason for the crashes..

regarding "the ip ranges page there is a 'default' button" - do you mean the tab und advanced / tcp/ip ports? there i have the following four entries:

0.0.0.0 / 500 /SMTP
0.0.0.0 / 25 /SMTP
0.0.0.0 / 143 / IMAP
0.0.0.0 / 110 /POP3

there is also a Default button, i guess i have to mark one of the Settings and make it to Default.
Because i am using only IMAP i would say i have to mark the IMAP Setting and click on Default , or?

POP3 is not used , can i delete this entry? SMTP i dont know if it is relevant, the accounts are mapped as "stand alone" imap accounts , no emails can be send out through the imap accounts. emails are only used from few groups as email-share, they are moving other mails into this imap accounts ..

regarding database and fix path. What you mean with that? Do you mean the SQL Database or somewhere in hmail?

Ok, this is really getting weird.

Can you update to a Win10 or Windowd Server 2016 Version?

I also had a Customer where Hardware was ok but there where Micropeaks in the Powergrid which caused some Problems. We solved it by setting up a
UPS and plugged it into the Server and connecting the UPS to the Powergrid. Allmost instanteanously the Problems didnt reappear anymore.

You have to keep in Mind: Your Error is "bad alloc"
This is basicly just a Memory block which hMailServer is trying to request from Windows but Windows response was "bad malloc.

hMailServer didnt create the Error, its only the Messenger of Windows fault.

But Windows doesnt do it without a reason.
It relies on healty Hardware and drivers to accomplish its duties.

@Dravion
From the diagnostics, the data directory is on a different drive, and the SQL Server is on a separate machine
I'm not sure if those drives / machines where tested

@PeterP
'IP ranges' is completely different section that TCP/IP settings
From the TCP/IP ports section, go up about 5 branches, past 'server messages', 'performance', 'mirror' and 'incoming relays'

Whilst IPranges will be an issue, the paths will be a bigger issue, and the hardware errors are likely to be fatal one day
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

@MattG

Yeah, there are multiple errors in the log. The cannot read text file is of course Storage related.

Maybe copying the DATA folder to the hMailServer Computer and letting hMailServer.ini pointing to it could solve the Problem.

ONLY if all paths are removed form the database first

The Hard drive from hmail was completely changed where. The hardware of SQL is moved to new hardware..
A Storage problem I can not image of.. Will check if I could migrate the hole hmail to new hardware :(

I checked the path values on sql, and there is a mix between full path and not full path. What is the best way to clean this? any sql statement? The hmail database is around 400MB ;(

I also found the IP Ranges Setting, I pushed the button. Will check if I can adjust the allow connections settings and other.. I dont eh in I need SMTP and Pop3 and anti-virus and anti-spam setting.. This computer is not connected to outside..

I guess i found one reason for the "Message: bad allocation".

I add few hmail accounts to see if i get also Problems with them.
After a while i get a Virus message from my antivirus Scanner F-Secure that an attachment is infected and that Fsecure deleted it.
After that message i looked at the logs i see the same messages "An error occured when reading file., Message: bad allocation" and "An unknown error occurred while reading a text file from disk." for the added imap account.

It Looks like with deleting the attachmend the hmail Server could not load the eml any more which i guess was the attachment..could that be?

It certainly could be that the Antivirus software was holding the file, and therefore it couldn't be loaded properly by hMailserver

@mattg: You told someone else with similar problems "I'll bet that you haven't excluded the data directory from Antivirus scanning and that your anti-virus has removed or quarantined those messages". I have no anti virus software on the machine where hmail is running, but the errors look the same. He fixed his problem by removing data records from the database. Don't know what this mean, hopefully he will answer in his post:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=32554&p=209251#p209251

I think the problems I have are anti-virus related.

'bad allocation' errors ARE NOT native hMailserver errors.

This is the wording of the error message supplied by the underlying Windows OS.
The number of methods that such an error message is generated is not finite, but certainly includes read/write from disk I/O

Normally 'bad allocation' is directly related to the hard discs failing.
In some circumstances if the system Anti-Virus holds files for a length of time, Windows may think that there is a disc problem, due to lack of response (time out)

This may also be an issue with network infrastructure and routing if you are using network storage

There are many, many things that could cause this, but ALL of them are environmental, ie they only happen to you because of something in your environment

thanks mattg for the Information.

Is there any maintenance possibility of the SQL database (SQL EXPRESS 2017) possible which is searching for non exiting files ?
