Sudden Service misbehaviour - help required (service fails to stop)

Post by jimimaseye » 2018-07-12 23:30

Help. Calling the experts.

For some reason as of yesterday my 20:00 backup started misbehaving. It happened last night and it just happened again tonight. This is the log:

Note that 20:00 it starts by ATTEMPTING to stop the servers. From there it actually doesnt complete and the next entry is at 22:12 when I intervene. The service actually failed to stop. See backup log file:

Code: Select all

20:00:00.34 Stopping Hmailserver service...
Failed to stop. Backup of emails not performed!!
The problem is that windows thinks on one hand the service hadnt actually srtopped in the first place and on the other hand it has stopped (and all my VBS scripts that rely on the HMS servoice running hang as the backup Bat continues).

You can see that it ALWAYS thinks the service is still there (failed to Bind ...one usage etc etc even though there is ONLY 1 hmailserver.exe running).

Code: Select all

This started yesterday and has happened 2 days on the trot now (identical situation). The only difference is I did a Windows Update yesterday morning (I havent had chance to look in to details). And Im off on my hols tomrrow - this is the WORST time for this to happen.

Even after attempting to kill all hmailserver.exe (using process explorer) it all still fails and only a reboot solves it.

See my attached screenshot.

It shows that I have attempted to TASKKILL hmailserver.exe but it cannot saying "no running instance of this task". And yet you can see in process explorer there is a hmailserver.exe. But yet you can see in services that the service is stopped. WTF?!

Help, advice, anyone.

Isn't it some other service running on a port normally used by hmailserver?
Btw, your logs lines are truncated, can you post the full log lines

Long shot...but did you have the webadmin open at that time? I recently had trouble stopping the service while the webadmin was open in a browser, it kept restarting automatically

No, thisd server is dedicated pretty much to hmailserver and is running fine all day. The 'conflict' to which you refer is a conflict of the ports that are already bound to the invisible "non existent" hmailserver service that wont die (see the screen shots in the previous post).

Truncated lines: That is from the error log - thats how they appear/got written there.

I have no web server or web service on this machine.

This has to be something to do with Windos Updates as this server is pretty much trouble free until yesterday. And funnily enough I am not the only one that has had a problem over this last two days with what seems to be exactly the same problem: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=32892

EDIT: After a reboot, I got my Error monitoring emails. Full description is:
Hmailserver error (severity<4) received:

12/07/2018 22:12:34
Severity: 2 (High)
Code: HM4316
Source: TCPServer::Run()
Description: Failed to bind to local port. Error: bind: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted. Address: 0.0.0.0, Error code: 10048, Port: 25. This is often caused by another server listening on the same port.To determine which server is listening on the port, telnet your server on port 25. Make sure that no other email server is running and listening on this port, and then restart the hMailServer service.
Not telling us anything we didnt already know though.

I'm getting the same issue. When my backup task runs, it can't stop the hmailserver service properly it seems. Then when starting the service again it errors out saying the ports can't be opened.

Running on Server 2008R2, used solely for hmail server 5.6.6. Has been working fine for around a decade until just recently.

You mentioned your Windows Server runs inside a VM?

Which Virtualization Product do you use?

VMWare for example can block certain ports from the Host Operating System for instance.

Also your Antivirus or Security Suite Software like ESET and other Products tampering with SSL and HTTPS Connections actively.

Make also sure your System Bios has Virtualization Support enabled and you did install your VM Guest Drivers.

I just tried uninstalling a .net update (kb4338423) from a couple of days ago, and now it seems to be working properly again.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/hel ... et-framewo

My system is server 2008r2 running on esxi 6.5 with vmtools installed.

I have uninstalled the 3 updates (there isn't a system restore per se on my windows 2008 r2 foundation).

My system is not a vm, it is full standalone dell power edge server. Very bare bones. Only hmailserver and associated database and a print server role is on it. As i said above this all takes place when the hmailserver service fails to stop and goes rogue until the system is rebooted. (Just as it has started doing for user Nime inn the other thread).

My holiday journey commences I 2 hours. I pray the uninstall of the updates had resolved it. We will find out to night at 20:00.....

Did you have the same problems i was having? (That was one of the updates and i have uninstalled it too).

I see it says:

Yeah I was seeing 2 hmailserver.exe processes running after my backup script ran. The first seemed to be hung, the second couldn't bind to any ports. I couldn't kill both processes either from task manager, so the server was essentially deaduntil I reboot.

After uninstalling just that update I could run my backup properly and stop/start the service just fine.

I was able to reproduce this issue on Windows Server 2012 with latest updates

FYI, the equivalent from Windows Server 2012 for this knowledge base article is KB4338421, After you uninstall KB4338421 hmailserver.exe can be stopped normally again

Windows Server 2008 R2 = KB4338423
Windows Server 2012 = KB4338421
Windows Server 2012 R2 = KB4338424
Windows Server 2016 = KB4338814 (although i had no problems restarting hmailserver.exe on Windows Server 2016 with KB4338814 )

Same problem; removing the less-than-amusingly named 2018-07 Security and "Quality" Rollup for .NET solved it. Unbelievable.

This is the second disaster Microsoft updates have caused for me THIS WEEK.

Unfortunately forced updates from MS are getting harder and harder to avoid. This is going to cause a lot of people a lot of problems.

5 of us on here have broadcast the problem within 3 days. I can't believe there isn't more out there that will be struggling with this.

How to make this thread more identifiable with search results? What key words do you think someone would write if they had a problem? (I'll change the thread title to match).

Thats why i disable the Windows Update Service most the time and only enable and install updates if i think its the right time. IMHO the best time for enabling and installing the Updates is, if there is no outcry in Amin Forums about crappy updates.
After installing updates i allways re-disable the Windows Updateservice again.

Looks like I spoke too soon - still crashed when my backup script ran last night, and confirmed just now the script will cause the crash.
i.e. the hmailserver.exe process doesn't stop properly and doesn't release the open ports, and can't be killed in task manager. When the script tries to start the service again, it creates a second hmailserver.exe process that can't bind to the ports.

I'm now uninstalling all the updates that applied earlier in the week.

edit: all 3 updates uninstalled. It runs ok now, but the real test will be when it gets triggered later tonight. Will know more tomorrow morning.

Well i had uninstalled all 3 updates and had a successful run last night. So I'm sure you will have a result.

However are you suggesting that the .net update might not nge the cause of the problem? (If so then it must be one of the others. But which? )

This is the first time I've been bitten by an update. Lesson learnt. Unfortunately i don't watch or have opportunity to browse forums. And haven't seen anything about this update captains problems elsewhere.

I can't afford things going wrong again. As a server it remains without user operation without browsing and web service etc. In the future i might just be avoiding updates altogether from now on. (If it isnt broke.... etc.)

Yeah the .net update didn't seem to affect it.

I have just uninstalled the following 2 updates: kb4338818 and kb4339093.

Couldn't be bothered doing one at a time, as I'm actually working on transitioning away from hmail server to an old free google apps account for the last couple of email accounts I need to keep live (was for my dads business that has now shut down). It'll be the last windows server that I can finally decommission. I've gotta say hmailserver has been a great no nonsense bit of software that required very little maintenance in the past 10 years.

Same problem here,
Backupscript stops mailserver, copies data and restarts mailserver.

Since the last windows-updates the mailserver hangs after restart. IMAP-Port already in use.
A complete restart of the VM "solves" problem.
Does anybody know more about comming fixes, either from hmail or microsoft?

Same problem !!

I've been racking my brains trying to sort this.

Hmailserver keeps saying the port is in use and cant bind.
I couldn't find anything using the port apart from hmailserver !!

So you've removed all updates from last week and the rebooted? And retried? (Removing all updates solved it for everyone else - although it's not definitively clear which update was responsible. But the posts above give clues that Microsoft have recognised their screw up).

Thanks!

Removing KB338818 fixed my problem.

I then disabled automatic updates on this server (download and notify. will do snapshot before updating now).

Interesting to read the "Known issues in this update" section for the kb article. It seems Microsoft have recognised that there are issues but ignored their impact and sent out the patch anyway. https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/hel ... -kb4338818

Created a forum account just to chime in on this. Also having the same issue on 2008R2. Every day the backup script would cause the service to hang and pskill and tskill were unsuccessful in killing the hung process. A quick reboot and suddenly services are back online and functional. In my case, though, this is a PHYSICAL server (not VM). Removing both of the updates identified (KB4340556 and KB338818) seems to have fixed it. I'm not 100% sure which one did it, but now the service exits correctly and the backup script functions as intended.

I'm running 5.6.8-B2431. I thought maybe that was the issue, but restoring a backup from just prior to the update didn't fix it.

Are they links to 'fixes' for the 'fix' that broke our machines previously? (Their description suggests they are).

If so are you saying that we can reinstall the system breaking patches (updates) and then run these fixes to make everything right again?

And if so do you know if they work without a problem and we are good to go?

Same problems here, currently uninstalling all Microsoft updates from the past week

It may be worth putting the HMS error code in to the subject of this thread, thats what I was originally searching for. It was only that this thread was at the top of the general forum that I actually got to see it

Fingers crossed the uninstall of the Microsoft updates works

P.S.
Just checked and HMS actually gave 3 different error codes, ERROR 4548, 5544 & 6280 so listing them probably won't help

I can also confirm that uninstalling all updates from 16th July has fixed the problem for now

Ok, Im back from my Hols and going to test and try to get to the bottom of this.

First, Im going to reinstall KB338818.
Then test (and hope to prove it is the cause of the problem).
Then install the now offered OPTIONAL update of KB438821 which is now being offered to solve problems caused by the first one (and now linked to in the first article in KB4338818)

(And working from home by RDP so fingers crossed it always reboots).

Stand by....

EDIT:

Ok, I installed KB4338818 ONLY... and I cant reproduce the problem. (ie, the backup script that issues 'net stop hmailserrver' by taskacheduler always seems to complete ok). Ive tried twice and still its ok. Hmmmm.... (Interesting to see KB4339093 is no longer being offered although it does say it is also included in KB4338818 anyway).

So now I will install KB438823 and see what happens.

So, now Im confused.

Initially, on the 11th I installed (by automatic 'important' updates) only:

KB4338818 - Quality rollup
KB4339093 - IE11 Cumulative path (which is also included in the Quality rollup)
KB338423 - .Net seciruty patch.

Then the problem manifested.

2 days later I deleted the same 3 updates.

Today, I installed

KB4338818

and tested and couldnt reproduce the problem. SO then I installed the other (remember 4339093 will no longer be offered again due to 4338818 already installed):

KB4338423

and still cannot reproduce the problem. I remain bemused. The system as I type is the same state as it was on the evening of the 11th as far as patches are concerned.

I guess I will see on Monday night what happens (the next schedule Backup process) - maybe it only becomes a problem after it has been running for a while (I know, it sounds ridiculous as a concept but what else can explain the lack of reproduction?) If it fails then I will go for the KB4338423 patch that is now offered as an optional to fix problem with 4438818. But I still remain confused.

Actually i meant kb4338421 as being offered as a fix to I known problems in the original kb4338818 (not 423 as i wrote above). It's true, though, that the wording of 421 and the article you posted (KB4345459) seems to be the same.

Ok, so as bizarre as it seems, it DOES depend on a period of time passing for some reason.

Ive left the system up and running for a day and just doing the test again (with the updates, unpatched, installed). And it has frozen. So now a reboot (to get the system back) and then I will go for the patch offered and hope it makes the difference.

Image

Of course, as I have just found out, the downside is that I am going to have to wait a day before I can do the proper like-for-like test to prove whether it has fixed anything.

The results. Tonights scheduled backup:
"APPLICATION" 3756 "2018-07-23 19:26:21.527" "SMTPDeliverer - Message 426976: Message delivery thread completed."
"APPLICATION" 1988 "2018-07-23 20:00:00.701" "Stopping servers..."
"APPLICATION" 1988 "2018-07-23 20:00:01.325" "Servers stopped."
"APPLICATION" 4756 "2018-07-23 20:00:48.484" "Starting servers..."

"APPLICATION" 4756 "2018-07-23 20:00:49.155" "Servers started."
Looking good.

So the conclusion is that KB4338821 (or the equivalent 'service pack 2' as posted by RvdH) is the fix for this problem introduced by KB4338818. So you can reinstall the July important updates and apply KB4338821 to ensure continual stability.

Just to confirm

I've applied all the Microsoft updates (Windows 2012 R2 Datacantre), including the optional ones
hMailServer booted up fine
I went through a backup cycle, including stopping and restartig the hMailServer process
No problems, seems to be fine

I will monitor closely over the next few days to ensure nothing funny happens

Ive done the quality rollup but left the .Net security patch off. I guess we will see monday night if we manage to complete a full days processing and procedure without hinderence.

(Mind you, I allowed the update on my personal win7 laptop and havent seen any issues.....yet.)
