Random Messages Hanging in the Delivery Queue Indefinitely

Post by Calorus » 2015-10-16 09:05

I've got 20 (out of 9567 processed) messages sitting in the delivery queue saying "As soon as possible" but all still have zero tries.

I can't see anything in common between these messages, they are to and from different people on different domains over a period of 4 weeks.And thousands of others are sending perfectly in the meantime.

The messages are external->internal, internal->internal and internal->external.

Clicking "Send now" changes the "Next try" to the current time, but the system never seems to try to send it.

Has anyone else come across anything like this?

You tried stop/starting the service?

Tried running DDS?

Stop/Starting has done the trick.

Schoolboy ignorance -- still wondering what might be causing it? Presumably just some minor bug or other...

Probably a configuration error.

If you don't have logging enabled, please enable SMTP, Application, TCPIP, Debug (at least) enabled, please do so
It'll will give us some hints next time this happens

Yeah, I'm logging Application, Debug and SMTP (and AWStats);

Can't see anything odd in there.

It's all a bit needle in a haystack; 20 out of 10,000 isn't bad at all, but it's distracting...

Admittedly its a minor annoyance.

How often do you stop/start the service? Its always a good idea to do it whilst the backup is being taken...which of course you do every day, right?! :wink: (Hint: stop/start your service every night as part of your housekeeping routine and at least it will hoover up any stragglers just like it did today).

Fair point...

Hint:

Code: Select all

set FailedHmailservice=Ok
net stop hmailserver
if errorlevel 1 set FailedHmailservice=Failed to stop

*Do backup here *

if "%FailedHmailservice%" EQ "Ok"
net start hmailserver
if errorlevel 1 set FailedHmailservice=Failed to restart

run tour logs through this, it will help pick stuff up

http://log.damnation.org.uk/

Also, that NEVER happens to me, and I don't restart my server as part of my backup routine.

Was there any error logs created?

I also see that, it started occuring after I upgrade to latest from 5.3.x

Stuck messages always has non-local "From" address and empty "To" fields shown on delivery queue > status screen. When I inspect the message by doubleclicking, message seems have a valid "To" header and it is a local address. But that message never delivered, retry count=0 (even if I rightclick and force a delivery) and next delivery column reads "as soon as possible". (same as OP)

But..
That "to" field actually an alias for a distribution list. (mail "To" field is addr@localsite.com, addr@localsite.com defined as alias to grp@localsite.com, grp@localsite.com is a public distribution list and it delivers to 3 local addresses. All of three addresses seems in good standing, no over quota etc.)

This info may shed a light for this situation. I will try to gather logs about this (it's occuring on a system that is not in my possession)
