External Network

Post by xpisbest » 2014-05-16 21:22

could anyone help please? i have managed to setup hmailserver & outlook express correctly. Prob is I cannot send/receive when outside my own network, when inside can send/receive through internal/exter' accounts 100% OK. The only difference is moving to an outside network nothing else is changed on the PC, all external accounts work OK when outside only any hmail accounts fail to work. Much appreciated.

we'd need more info. it could be anything from ISP blocking ports to using private ip address instead of public one to NAT port forwards not setup right to firewall to incorrect hostname or who knows.

Thanks for the reply Bill. To answer your question about ports & router etc, the router must be setup correctly as can send/receive both in & outside network. IE server to server are able to connect & exchange mail. The problem for me is purely not able to connect using outlook express when outside my own network. Using GRC.com sheildsUP that reports ports 25,110 are open correctly to SMTP & POP3. The only internal addresses are DHCP assigned off the router. currently I am experimenting with sub hosting a DNS until I get the hang of things then will move to hosting my own later. If anyone could help further with any ideas it is much appreciated.

Regards

In Outlook express, what do you have in account settings>> Server settings for POP and for SMTP
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

I'm not concerned about the ports

What are the 'server' settings for both POP and SMTP

Had a delay with other things. The server port settings: incoming server is a POP3, both incoming/outgoing both have the same server name., account name & password are set & out going server requires authentication - then settings are the same as incoming server. Does that answer your question?

these must be correct because i can connect behnd router OK, have been trying to use via external VPN instead of public hotspot & now can connect for POP3 to receive but NO send for SMTP. any further advice would be appreciated

when sending an email i get the following notice from Thunderbird which i have started to use as a test bed as well as outlook express:

An error occurred sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: Cannot connect to SMTP server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:25), NB connect error 1460

the server reports " No Messge To Index" every time I try to send. It does however imply there is some communication between client/server

I can still send/receive inside own network, using VPN can receive only, can send/receive OK wilth external address not on my own server. The same behaviour is displayed using outlook express or thunderbird. Any help would be appriciated.

No it does not

What EXACTLY are your settings
Please show a screen shot

I don't think that you are connecting to your hmailserver from your mail clients, I suspect that your mail clients are trying to connect somewhere else

Are you sure dab.servebeer.com does always resolve to the same ip? Inside and outside your network? And if you telnet SMTP you see the banner you configured?
