Message retrieval failed because message file did not exist.

Post by prisma » 2011-03-30 13:26

Sometimes I got following errors:

"ERROR" 2612 "2011-03-14 17:50:03.375" "Severity: 3 (Medium), Code: HM5026, Source: PersistentMessage::_WriteDataToMessageFile, Description: Message retrieval failed because message file \\fileserver\hmail\Data\my.org\info\29\{2985945B-9BB5-4718-A034-5F34FB8C1D2D}.eml did not exist."
"ERROR" 2612 "2011-03-14 17:50:03.390" "Severity: 3 (Medium), Code: HM5026, Source: PersistentMessage::_WriteDataToMessageFile, Description: Message retrieval failed because message file \\fileserver\hmail\Data\my.org\info\C3\{C37D96AB-959B-436D-860A-E3AB53CC774B}.eml did not exist."

Possibly it is a network error. Possibly "fileserver" is not reachable. But hMailserver runs within a VM wich herself runs directly on "fileserver". So, both machines are communicating only over a virtual network. No real cable, switch or NIC is involved. So it's hard to believe that it is a networking problem or a question of availability.

AND remarkably is, that this error seems to appear only on one single account, that is used common, by many IMAP-Clients. Possibly a timing problem of deleted emails? How to prevent this? Other explanations?

What AV is on the VM or the host
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

On the host (fileserver) is no AV, on hMailserver VM is ClamWin.

YES I know :) , I should use ClamAV [tBB], but this Server is not heavy loaded and I'm waiting for release 5.4 for TCPIP connection between hMail and AV, simliar to spamd.

Have you excluded the Data directory from directory scanning, or do you only use ClamWin for command line scanning of mail?

commandline scanning, on demand of hmailserver, no scheduled full scan.

Something in the back of my mind seems to tell me that you may run in to issues with file locking when your program files and data are on a mapped drive, but I could be thinking of some other situation. As you stated, the latency and error rate should be nil, as hMailServer is in a VM on the fileserver host. I know some users here run a cluster with multiple machines accessing a SAN, but that is a little different than using a mapped drive.
hMailServer 5.5.2-B2129 on Server 2008 R2 VM
MySQL 5.5.25, IIS 7.5, PHP 5.6.2 via FastCGI, RoundCube 1.0.3
XenServer 6.0 on HP DL380 G5 32GB RAM

I remember something along those lines too rjk. it could be network issues even though it is virtual. Emulation layers through virtual interfaces load up the CPU. Without testing on a local drive it's hard to diagnose and I assume that server is a production one, that you don't want to play around with to much.

How many VM's are on the server?

4 VMs. But really loaded are only 2 of them. The DC and the mailserver.
The other 2 are a local Linux Test-Webserver and a WSUS, what means they are more or less running idle.

Many IMAP-Clients on info@ means 3 or max. 4. Ok, that's not many... I wanted to say multiple not many :)

Only thing i can suggest is to enable IMAP logging and scrutinize who is doing what when the error occurs.

Got the same...

Code: Select all

"ERROR"	1276	"2011-05-27 17:53:48.806"	"Severity: 3 (Medium), Code: HM5026, Source: PersistentMessage::_WriteDataToMessageFile, Description: Message retrieval failed because message file \\fileserver\hmail\Data\mydomain.com\info\CD\{CD1F0AE5-FE23-4369-ADD5-52445D161A83}.eml did not exist."
"ERROR"	1276	"2011-05-27 17:53:48.806"	"Severity: 3 (Medium), Code: HM5026, Source: PersistentMessage::_WriteDataToMessageFile, Description: Message retrieval failed because message file \\fileserver\hmail\Data\mydomain.com\info\FA\{FA4131AE-1BEA-455B-85DD-14DCC30E24F7}.eml did not exist."
But in the meantime this error appears very rarely. I believe it was the first time again. Last time I checked the Imap-Logs and found ... nothing. This error appears very rarely since I've archived the incoming folder with Thunderbird (archivfolder with subfolders named by year). How to construe this? Any ideas?

I could live with that, if I'd know what hMailserver does in such a moment. A stream of data couldn't be written into a file whose creation has probably failed before or couldn't be opened. So... what happens with this stream? Is it dropped? Or will the action be repeated until success? Bill, you got the source code. Could you please have a look at this?

I'm afraid of updating to a newer version ;) I read in this forum about some strange things in 5.3.3.
5.3.4 and 5.4 is beta... so... to answer your question: I'm running hMailServer 5.3.2 - Build 1769.

I am running 5.4 in production, I recommend you upgrade too. No point wasting time trying to find a bug in hMail that may have already been fixed. If it is a hMail bug that gets fixed you would have to upgrade anyway.

You're right. I'll live with this problem for a few months. At the moment I've no time for preparing and testing the update to 5.4.
