HELP - Folder "Lostfiles" - Where is it from?

Post by prisma » 2011-02-21 16:32

Thu. morning we found HMS 5.3.2+Spamass+ClamWin completely hanging. After service restart we found a folder named "lostfiles". He was positioned in a share beside the folder "data". The folder "lostfiles" was filled with 4thousand-x files.

Where is it from? I checked the folder "data" inside the backup of the day before. He contains less files than the actual folder (of course, in the meantime emails where received). So I reasoned, that the lostfiles couldn't be moved out of the actual folder "data". Also remarkable is, that the UIDs of the EML files in "lostfiles" seem to be not inside the actual folder "data" as well not in the backup of the day before. But where are the files from?

I suspect a test-system to be started accidentally with a test installation of HMS 5.4. All Paths in hmailserver.ini of this test-system are pointing to local drives. But the local database is a copy of the actual database which contains full paths to the share... like HMS did it until 5.3.3, and what has been changed with 5.4. The local folder "data" of this test-system is empty.

Is it possible that the folder "lostfiles" is associated with this test-system? But if the files are not missing neither in production system nor the backup, how are they processed? Where are they from?

prisma,
You sure that folder was named exactly lostfiles? I wasn't able to find that in the 5.4 sources (I don't have 5.3 sources to see if it was there before). Almost sounds like a hard drive problem & chkdsk threw 'lost files' into that folder.. You see any event log entries around the date/time stamp of that folder & the files?

Hey Bill,

yes, it is written exactly "LostFiles". No event entries around that time. But thanks for the look at the code, so I can be sure that it has nothing to do with this test-5.4-system...

Of course, I had the same suspicion, but M$ documentation says nothing about a folder named "LostFiles" created by chckdsk, does it?
If somebody could have a look in 5.3 source to be absolutely sure that it has nothing to do with hMailserver, I'd appreciate it!!

Thanks Bill

Cheers Greg

the only person that can do that is martin@hmailserver.com

FWIW, chkdsk creates "found.000" in the root of C:\.

Have you run data directory synchronizer? I am wondering if the folder is from that. Bill?

Datasync didn't run. Possibly accidental, but not initiated from me. So possibly yes, but presumably no.

As I said I searched the 5.4 & 4.4.4 source code (I don't have access to 5.3 or anything between 4.4.4 & 5.4) and did not find the string "LostFiles" in any case text.. I searched the entire source including the GUI tools (like data dir sync) etc. Unless someone else has seen LostFiles folder be created by 5.3 hmail you'd have to wait for martin to respond but I'm guessing it was done by something else besides hmail.. Like a chkdsk-type utility or such. (Got me, can't know every tool/app in the world. lol)

Thank you guys, I also see reason that it has nothing to do with hMailserver!

God bless hMailserver ;)
