relaying on smtp 26 and pop 111

Post by polarunion » 2004-04-05 21:08

simply - i have two computers on a home network. one is a http/mail server and the other is my laptop which i'd like to try this program on for a while to see how it works.

for now i have ports 110 and 25 forwarded to the main server with my router NAT settings and i have set ports 111 and 26 to forward to my laptop for use with hMail.

I've set POP3 and SMTP ports in HMail and in Outlook so that they can talk to each other.

I have a valid MX and it does resolve. try it - http://www.thepolarunion.com.

SO. I can send mail to an external address, but I can not recieve any.

I am getting an 551 error saying the user is not local.

Does anyone have any ideas on what is going wrong? Passwords are all working because like I said, if it weren't for the change of ports the program works great in sending and receiving.

The way I see it is that when I send an email from that external address to my domain which points to my home network, it automatically sends it to the SMTP on 25 instead of 26. Is it like the web that unless you don't state which port the server is on, it will automatically resolve to port 80? example: http://www.google.ca:6767 for port 6767 instead of the typical port 80?

Thanks for your help, program looks great, looking forward to trying it out.
PS.. looking forward to the IMAP features!!!

Don't understand what you mean. When do you get "551 user is not local"?

whenever i try to send an email to my Hmail server at thepolarunion.com from an outside email address (ie. hotmail) the hmail server returns a 551 error back to hotmail.

the exact error is that i got in my hotmail box was:

551 User not local. Authentication required for relay

You can't use a SMTP server on port 25 if you want to be able to receive mail. All receving email servers must run on port 25. It's impossible to have a SMTP server for incoming email on port 25. You may be able to configure your SMTP server to do so, but you'll never receive any email from external domains.
