RoundCube, Horde, AfterLogic WebMail (Lite is free), SquirrelMail are a few common ones people mention using or google free webmail php or such.

If you just want a fast no-frills webmail client that doesn't need anything (except PHP of course) you could have a look at NOCC http://nocc.sourceforge.net/?lang=en

As for the server part, instead of the notorious Apache I can also recommend Abyss from http://www.aprelium.com/

Best regards,

Nico

Abyss is great if you only have a single website to run, I to recommend it. If you want to run multiple websites you have to pay for it.
If at first you don't succeed, bomb disposal probably isn't for you! ヅ

Wow hadn't thought about NOCC in years. Tried it WAY back when and ended up using UebiMiau (still do actually but HEAVILY modded). Had checked in on NOCC a few times over the years & I thought it was dead long ago but seems it's active so maybe it was dormant for awhile.

Just in case you didn't notice, UebiMiau is now Telaen and after a 'reboot' again actively developed. It's now available at http://www.telaen.com/ and also worth a try.

Thanks Nico,
Yeah I saw Telaen spun off from UebiMiau way back when (actually there are a few of them including a commercial paid one that Aldoir - UebiMiau author - was involved in if I recall correctly..) and have tried a few of them a few times but my old mod'd version was 100x better (for my needs anyway) and no easy way to merge so I stuck it out with what I had as it worked, it's just really aged now and I've been testing others.

It is cool to see it's being actively developed though. I'd have to check it out but I suspect it has some of the Uebi shortcomings inherited from the original. In particular dealing with very many messages in the box, timeouts & HUGE memory consumption.. Odds are I'll be moving to RoundCube but will give all the latest versions of any webmail I can find a shot so thanks for reminding me of Telaen and perhaps the OP or others will consider it too.

That's 'tupimail' http://www.tupimail.com/en/index.php

These issues were apparently addressed in Telaen v1.30rc.

Roundcube is nice indeed. The only thing that annoys me is that it's constantly being scanned for vulnerabilities by tools like Morfeus, DFind or revolt. At some days I have thousands of

"GET /cube/README HTTP/1.1" 404 5173 "" "Morfeus strikes again."
"GET /round/README HTTP/1.1" 404 5173 "" "Morfeus strikes again."
"GET /roundcube-0.2/README HTTP/1.1" 404 5173 "" "Morfeus strikes again."
"GET /roundcube-0.1/README HTTP/1.1" 404 5173 "" "Morfeus strikes again."

and alike in my server logs. Not that I would care (note the 404's) but still it's annoying. In any case it's probably a good idea to keep RoundCube always up-to-date.

Best regards,

Nico

Yupper that was the one I was thinking of!

Yeah I got Telaen on my list to try out again. :)

Yeah no kidding definitely annoying and definitely need to keep any web app updated. The more popular the more likely they are to be scanned for. Never hurts to not use default paths & run on an alternate port either. ;)

Meanwhile there are a lot plugins for Roundcube especially coded for hmailserver:

(*) register (self-registration)
(*) hmail_autoban (add banned IP range after several invalid login attempts)
(*) hmail_autoresponder (vacation notification)
(*) hmail_forwarding (forward messages to another account)
(*) hmail_login (aliased login)
(*) hmail_password (change password)
(*) hmail_signature (server side signature)
(*) hmail_spamfilter (move message marked by hmailserver spam tools into junk folder)

RoundCube is my 1st choice when it comes to webmail; sure, it had (has ?) vulns, but there are ways to properly lock it down... see, I can't even think to a webmail if it isn't running on SSL (https) and that alone helps quite some; then well... keeping it up to date is a need ... as for any other application; about PHP... I can't say I love it but in such cases I need to bite the bullet and follow the instructions found here to install PHP on IIS and ensure it will be running as expected

Public Service Announcement : Dont forget to install FastCGI module if you want to run php on iis7.5 else you will get in a mess.
