Tarpitting - a couple of questions

Post by ric melia » 2005-05-13 14:57

I've had a look for some info regarding tarpitting in hMailServer but haven't been able to find much.

[using 3.4.1 b86]

I think I understand what it is for / how to use it, but would like clarification.

My understanding is that tarpitting causes a small delay inbetween messages when sending a large number at one time.

I don't really understand how to use the settings in hMail admin though.

If for example I have a distribution list with 2000 members on it, but only want to send a maximum of 500 messages per hour (for whatever reason), how would I do this using the tarpitting settings?

Also, when does the delay happen? I'm hoping that the answer will be something along the lines of:
1. client sends mail to server for distribution list
2. mail is put in queue
3. mail is sent at 500 messages an hour as per tarpitting settings.

If I've completely misunderstood, please enlighten me... :)

thanks in advance,

ric

You can't set the number of smpt session in a hour. You can only set the number of simulaniously smtp-connections. The higher the numer the more messages you can send at once, but de server load gets heavier too.

so you can set the number of concurrent smtp connections + the delay in seconds between the current set of connections closing and the next set opening?

Nope, just the number of similtaniously smtp connections. (On the advanced tab of het smtp settings). Hmailserver will continiously try to deliver mail if there are mails in queue.
