New Install - frustrated

Post by bsanford » 2009-10-10 20:20

I have read and read. I have looked at the trouble shooting documents and the install documents and I just can't seem to get the settings correct. I am new to setting up a mail server. I just built a Windows Home Server and wanted to be able to install the mail server. I bought my domain name from GoDaddy.com yesterday. Here is what my control panel looks like:
A (Host) Points To
mail.sanfordhome.net 71.170.109.253
pop3.sanfordhome.net 71.170.109.253
smtp.sanfordhome.net 71.170.109.253
imap.sanfordhome.net 71.170.109.253
@ 71.170.109.253

MX
Priority Host Goes To
0 @ mail.sanfordhome.net
I think I have all this set correctly - but not sure.

Here is my diagnostic test:
Test: Collect server details
hMailServer version: hMailServer 5.2.1-B361
Database type: MSSQL Compact

Test: Test outbound port
SMTP relayer not in use. Attempting mail.hmailserver.com:25
Trying to connect to host mail.hmailserver.com...
Trying to connect to TCP/IP address 216.128.26.134 on port 25.
Connected successfully.

Test: Test MX records
Trying to resolve MX records for sanfordhome.net...
Host name found: mail.sanfordhome.net

Test: Test local connect
Connecting to TCP/IP address in MX records for local domain domain sanfordhome.net...
Trying to connect to host mail.sanfordhome.net...
Trying to connect to TCP/IP address 72.167.82.11 on port 25.
Connected successfully.

Here is the error I get when testing an e-mail account using Windows Live e-mail client:
Unable to send or receive messages for the Sanfordhome (cindy) account. An incorrect password was entered. The next time you send or receive messages, you'll be asked to enter your user name and password for this account.

Server Error: 0x800CCC90
Server Response: -ERR authorization failed
Server: 'mail.sanfordhome.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC92
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No

Here is the error using Outlook Express on my server:
There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'mail.sanfordhome.net', Server: 'mail.sanfordhome.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR authorization failed', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

I know the password has been set-up correctly in HMailServer and Outlook Express.

Please help! My ports on my router are open and working fine: SMTP 25, IMAP 143, POP3 110

does your password contain any special characters? Have you tried using a simple password such as test temporarily?

I can't connect from the "outside" with mail.sanfordhome.net. But smtp.sanfordhome.net works.

Spot the Difference.

Is it the alias pop.sercureserver.net causing the problem? If I delete the pop.secureserver.net from my domain control panel - will that take care of the issue (if that is even the issue?)

I am brand new to the mail server - thanks for your help.

I am not sure which part to fix. I pointed all the A Host settings to the correct ip address and my MX is pointed correct I think. I am confused on what I am missing. I see that the ip addresses are different - I just do not understand what to do to fix them.

Thank you.

I see that but those are controlled by the company I bought my domain through (GoDaddy.com) I did a whois ip search and it came back to GoDaddy. Do I delete those CNAMES to fix it?

Thank you.

I don't know too much about goDaddy, but I believe that they have a user control panel where you can change those settings...

Is that 'Do you point smtp.sanfordhome.net, pop.sanfordhome.net and mail.sanfordhome.net to your servers IP Address'?

If you want your server to receive mail, and be able to connect to your server to to send mail, then yes, other servers and your remote clients will need to know where to look on the internet.

You may also need to check that port25 is not blocked by your ISP - http://www.hmailserver.com/documentatio ... om_outside

those are pointed to my servers IP address (see my original question above - I think I have all those pointed correctly). I don't undestand where those other IP addresses are coming from (the ones you highlighted) Those are GoDaddy's but if I set up the Host to point to my server, shouldn't those be the IP addresses that show?

Do I need to do anything with the CNames that GoDaddy sets by default?

Port 25 is not blocked as I have checked it several times.

Any other suggestions?

Again, thanks for your help.

The internet DNS can take a day to catch-up / update.

IntoDNS doesn't list your servers at all - http://www.intodns.com/

Can you connect locally from the a mail client on the same machine as hMailserver?

Why are you making this so hard? You need to set mail.sanfordhome.net IP address to 64.202.166.12 which is the same as smtp.sanfordhome.net which you say worked. Once you have changed the IP wait for upto 72 hours for it to propagate across the net.

Doom, re-reading the Original Post I'm not even certain that bsanford has connected from a client on the same machine as hMailserver. This may be as easy-to-fix as having username in the form 'user@domain.com'

I thought I had to point all my A Host settings to my mail server IP? The 64.202.166.12 is an IP address to GoDaddy's server.

According to that there is at least a mailserver on smtp.sandfordhome.net is this not your hMail install? Have you asked godaddy to open port 25? Do a search on this forum for godaddy and have a read through previous posts. That might help you.

No as long as the ports are forward and you can lookup DNS entries that should be all that's required. As I said contact godaddy about port 25. They do block it and you have to request them open it. I have seen it on this forum many times.

Here my log:

"DEBUG" 5756 "2009-10-13 20:54:52.515" "Application::StartServers() - Starting servers"
"DEBUG" 1612 "2009-10-13 20:54:52.625" "SMTPDeliveryManager::Start()"
"DEBUG" 1072 "2009-10-13 20:54:52.640" "ExternalFetchManager::Start()"
"DEBUG" 5756 "2009-10-13 20:54:52.875" "Application::~StartServers() - Servers started"

Any idea? I still get the error when opening Outlook Express:

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your password was rejected. Err username or password is incorrect. I have the full e-mail address as the username, password matches what I entered in hMailserver under accounts and the the box "my server requires authentication" checked. Domain is sanfordhome.net Checking it on intodns.com everything looks o.k.

Thanks.

Then if there are no POP3 or SMTP lines in the log, then your outlook isn't connecting at all to your hMailserver installation.

I have checked them over and over. I have deleted the account, entered a new one etc. This does not make sense. I have deleted hmailserver and program file folder, reinstalled and still no luck.

Looking at the post I question several things

1. Where is the mail server being hosted?
a. If it's at you place make sure you tell Godaddy who your nameservers are
b. If it's at Godaddy then you can't run mail server because they are

2. Why do you need a records for imap, pop and smtp?
a. Just mail should work fine if the above is done correctly

The mail server is being hosted on my machine. The nameservers have been moved from GoDaddy to freedns.org nameservers. I left the A Host names in place at GoDaddy - can I delete those as I also set those up through freedns.org. I was hoping that moving my domain to the freedns.org nameservers that would eliminate GoDaddy blocking port 25.

I am not sure about #2. I was just following directions that I have read throughout this site.

I installed hMailserver on the C: drive

I can telnet the mailserver on the same machine

Yes, I unistalled hMailserver yesterday and connected to the internet from my server to download it again.

seem to be making some progress. My e-mail error is different:

Unable to send or receive messages for the Sanfordhome (cindy) account. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity.

Server: 'mail.sanfordhome.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No
I did reboot the server to see if that would clear up anything. Any idea on this error?

Thanks.

It looks to be working OK. :)

I just sent you a mail at that address, and you appear to have tried to respond (my server issues a greylist 'please try again later')

If you are still having trouble, please enable all logging, try to connect again with your mail client, and post the logs...
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

Some success- thank you! I can't send a test message from one e-mail to another that I set up.

Here is the return mail error I received:

Your message with Subject: test
could not be delivered to the following recipients:

cindy@sanfordhome.net

Please do not resend your original message.

Delivery attempts will continue to be made for 1 day(s).

Finally got all my settings correct and hmailserver working. I am able to send to most e-mail addresses ok but I received an error back from an e-mail I sent today. I looked in the trouble guides and don't see this error (I do see the 550 errors but not the same one) and I am not sure what to do. I have SMTP authentication on in hmailserver as well as my e-mail program (my server requires authentication is checked.)

I looked up the info on Spamhaus to see why my IP was on the PBL list and here is what it said:
Help! My IP address is on the PBL! What should I do?
Nothing, in most cases. Read through this FAQ for further explanations.

The first thing to know is: THE PBL IS NOT A BLACKLIST. You are not listed for spamming or for anything you have done. The PBL is simply a list of all of the world's dynamic IP space, i.e: IP ranges normally assigned to dialup and broadband ISP customers (DSL, DHCP, PPP, cable, dialup). It is perfectly normal for dynamic IP addresses to be listed on the PBL. In fact all dynamic IP addresses in the world should be on the PBL. Even static IPs which should not send mail may be listed in the PBL.

PBL listings do not prevent you sending email unless your email program is not authenticating properly when it connects to your ISP or company's mail server. This can happen if you have forgotten to turn on 'Authentication' or if you have switched 'Authentication' off by mistake.

If you are using a normal email program such as Outlook, Entourage, Thunderbird or Apple Mail and you are being blocked by a Spamhaus PBL listing when you try to send email, the reason is simply that YOU NEED TO TURN ON 'SMTP AUTHENTICATION' in your email program's account settings. That will solve the problem for you. See: How do I turn on SMTP Authentication?

Server admins who need help with SMTP AUTH can find lots of information for most servers such as Sendmail, Postfix, Exim, Qmail, Exchange, etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

> I am able to send to most e-mail addresses ok but I received an error back from an e-mail I sent today.

Do you mean the following erro?
550 Mail from 71.252.203.10 refused. Please refer to http://www.spamhaus.org/lookup.lasso for an explanation

The error message tells you what to do? What exactly are you asking for? :)
