Close thunderbird (check in Task manager if it really quitted) and start it up again and check again.
If nothing changes, close Thunderbird again and stop hMailServer in Windows Services and start it again.

Now start Thunderbird again and try again.
Getting the same result
An wondering if this has now got something to with it.
This comes up when i hit start in the Hmail Diagnostics screen.
Was fine with all green.

This is related to Diagnostic functions. Maybe you can bypass it by not trying to use or click on hMailServer Self Diagnostic tab, just ignore it for
now and re-check that Auto-ban is "Disabled". And check again with Thunderbird. If it works report back and we can solve your Diagnostic error.

Check your autoban entries. Delete the ip address that relates to your pc.

What would help now is to get a complete view of setup so far. Run this and post the results: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=30914

Ok, then do the following:

1) Open a Windows Command prompt as Administrator
2) Change folder to your hMailServer install "bin" folder (for example with: cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\hMailServer\Bin"
3) Type in the following command: hMailServer.exe /Unregister and hit Enter
4) Type in the following command: hMailServer.exe /Register and hit Enter
5) Open hMailAdmin and see if the Error went away.

Then make sure under Windows Services hMailServer is started and re-run hMailadmin again.
If this doesn't work, try a Re-Install over your existing hMailServer installation. If this doesn't work uninstall hMailServer
and go in Windows Explorer to C:\Program Files (x86) and delete the hMailServer folder and all its content. In this case you
need to Setup you SSL stuff again (as you already did before).

Thunderbird has now latched on and is back receiving but still not sending
What happens?

Enable tcpip, smtp and application logging (only! ). Then try to send and paste the results of the log for that moment.

Ok, according to you log entries there is a repeating error which only occurs if you try to send something to the outside Internet.

Do me a favor:
Open Thunderbird and sent a Email from your own Email account (shane@lab23.uk) to your self (to shane@lab23.uk)
and report back if the sended Email to your self reached the inbox.

If this is the case we know we have to tune your SSL encryption settings (disabling SSL3 for example and TLSv1.0 and TLSv1.1 and only allow TLSv1.2 and TLSv1.3).

Any reason you are using a relay for sending mail to the outside? Or maybe you have no clue what your doing (it looks like that to be honest)
A quick lookup for smtpout.secureserver.net config details/options turn up as:

Code: Select all

Server: smtpout.secureserver.net
Port: 465
Security: SSL/TLS
Username: Your full email address
Password: Your password
Looks like you use smtpout.secureserver.net on port 25 without authenticating yourself

Your SPF record is still broken but not needed if you are going to relay.....so what is it exactly you are trying to accomplish :?:
If you can't give clear answers to the above, maybe running a mailserver isn't something you should try :!:

Any reason you are using a relay for sending mail to the outside? Or maybe you have no clue what your doing (it looks like that to be honest)
Hi RvdH,
I absolutely don't have a clue nor have i indicated otherwise :D
I don't know where that relayer has come from as i have followed every step i have been shown.
If this is something not required should it be removed ?

Your SPF record is still broken but not needed if you are going to relay.....so what is it exactly you are trying to accomplish :?:
If you can't give clear answers to the above, maybe running a mailserver isn't something you should try :!:
Hi RvdH,
My goal was to learn something along the way and manage my own emails associated with my own domain away from any corporate subscription.
Self sustained.
Email to have the ability to function just as a regular Gmail type account as comparison to be able to send and receive publicly.

This is a great forum and there are certainly a lot of experts for guidance and its very much appreciated all the support that has been provided.
I think coming for an absolute ZERO point to now for me is a great achievement even if it is not working :D

In that case get rid of the relay and send it yourself (that is if you allowed to and your ISP doesn't block port 25)
Get a PTR record, if you can't... forget about it you never going to be able to mail out yourself without it being marked as spam
Fix your SPF record

Do it step by step, you are doing to much at once and it obvious it going to fast for you, the goal is you understand what you are doing not to simply repeat what we say you have to do

Hi RvdH,

I have requested a PTR record from my ISP yesterday pending their feedback (will chase them)

This is now the SMTP area within Hmail.
1.jpg
Now once done this i sent a mail from outside account and it was received.
The replay also went through and was received.
This was to my .nemorgan.co.uk Account which is managed by Google
I also just sent a fresh email out from Lab23 to sh@nemorgan.co.uk (my personal account) and it went through but ended in the spam folder (but got there).

I Asked a friend to send in a mail from a Gmail account and it was received.
Then i replied and it got bounced back with the below.
2.jpg
Which i am guessing is due to the SPF record you mentioned and the world seeing Lab23 as a spam station ?
Is that correct in my thinking ?

Kind Regards
Shane

For your education Shane:

SPF is a protection for YOU and YOUR DOMAIN to ensure emails sent 'as your domain' get treated accordingly ie, it stops other servers and sites sending emails claiming to be you. So you need to sort this so that the internet knows which are genuine servers that YOU choose to send from and which are not.

Regarding the relay: This is about you SENDING. Hmailserver is a mail server just like google (gmail), Yahoo and Hotmail. As a server it sends out to other mail servers on port 25 (based on the findings of DNS records for the intended recipient domain). The need for relay is only if YOUR ISP blocks you from sending emails (ie, they block port 25) or you have a residential address (ie, the world doesnt assume you should be sending emails and therefore, if you are, you are likely to be rogue and flooding the world with unwanted shite/spam).

As you have a business line, port 25 might be unblocked (which you have proven with your sending test) so no, you dont need a relay.

You just need to fix your SPF (and PTR) records.

Yep

Code: Select all

nslookup -q=txt lab23.uk
it still returns 2 (faulty) records

Code: Select all

Non-authoritative answer:
lab23.uk text =

        "v=spf1 ip4=154.61.56.236 -all"
lab23.uk text =

        "v=spf1 ip4=154.61.56.236 include:lab23.uk -all"

Correct SPF record(s)

@ lab23.uk

Code: Select all

v=spf1 ip4:154.61.56.236 -all
smtp.lab23.uk (eg: for smtp sub domain)

Code: Select all

v=spf1 ip4:154.61.56.236 -all

Hi,
Yes, I sent the email to myself and that was instantly received to the Inbox:

Ok, this means the complete roundtrip of DNS resolution, deployment and queing of messages works as well as your port 587 and imap settings as it should.

At this point, the problem is clearly a thing between your hMailServer and the other SMTP servers on the public internet which can not negotiate a working SSL protocol
version.

"Wrong protocol number" is a SSL error Message which comes from the OpenSSL Library hMailServer makes heavy use of. If you google the error text you find thousands of OpenSSL related forum threads discussing the error.

So, we have to check your SSL settings carefully.

Hi RvdH,

@ lab23.uk

Code: Select all

v=spf1 ip4:154.61.56.236 -all
[/b]

This bit is relevant for the domain in general and manages the destination path of that to the Server (ip) ?

smtp.lab23.uk (eg: for smtp sub domain)

Code: Select all

v=spf1 ip4:154.61.56.236 -all
[/b]

This bit is relevant for the specific SMTP server running under that domain but operates on the server at the destination ip?

Thanks for the feedback now reconciled.
Also just received call from ISP asking for the domain name for the PTR record so have given then that and they are working on it which i guess is a plus point other than a rejection :)

Kind Regards

@ lab23.uk -> domain spf check
smtp.lab23.uk -> spf helo/ehlo check

both can be identical, the 2nd one is mainly to comply to a spamassassin check

value:

They just asked for domain so i told them lab23.uk does this need to be smtp.lab23.uk ?

I have also now just tested sending a mail from lab23 to my work email Panasonic (big corp they block everything usually) and it worked send, received and reply return.

Also just received call from ISP asking for the domain name for the PTR record so have given then that and they are working on it which i guess is a plus point other than a rejection :)
What did you tell them to use, smtp.lab23.uk?
They just asked for domain so i told them lab23.uk does this need to be smtp.lab23.uk ?

Let your ISP make sure you have a PTR record, if not any mail send from this ip most likely will be triggered as being SPAM
If you have anything to choose and if it is possible, 154.61.56.236 -> PTR -> smtp.lab23.uk
lab23.uk should work, smtp.lab23.uk would be better

SPF record(s) looks OK now so that seems to be fixed ✅

What did you tell them to use, smtp.lab23.uk?
They just asked for domain so i told them lab23.uk does this need to be smtp.lab23.uk ?

Let your ISP make sure you have a PTR record, if not any mail send from this ip most likely will be triggered as being SPAM
If you have anything to choose and if it is possible, 154.61.56.236 -> PTR -> smtp.lab23.uk
lab23.uk should work, smtp.lab23.uk would be better

SPF record(s) looks OK now so that seems to be fixed ✅

Hi,

Have updated them with smtp.lab23.uk

As for DKIM, check my signature here for a helper (web)app

You think some utility company is going to jump out of their chairs, sound the alarm and red flashing lights over one little customer? Give it a couple of days. They don't even do that for "green screen" Zelensky

DKIM and Spamassassin is about keeping YOUR NETWORK secure (not the mailserver - that is done with firewalls and Operating System tools). Typically they are designed to ensure that your users are not receiving (at best) annoying or (at worst) malicious/dangerous emails with explosive links or attachments.
5.7 on test.

Good job. You're a natural at this. Believe me, you're learning this faster than I did.

RvdH is right. Spamassassin is the next objective. Or, possibly setting up LetsEncrypt certificates. Fortunately, you have several experts on both topics on these very august pages. :D Also, there are some excellent tutorials in the tutorial forum.

The main thing is to take it one step at a time. Learn it, implement it, then move on to the next issue. Then before you know it, you'll be an expert handing out advice to people like you (as of now).

Shazam!, someone is on a role...kudos to you🫵👍

Although me personally would have gone for SpamAssassin 4.0.0 (latest release)
As mentioned earlier take step by step and you should be OK

The main thing is to take it one step at a time. Learn it, implement it, then move on to the next issue. Then before you know it, you'll be an expert handing out advice to people like you (as of now).
Well said, couldn't agree more

Hi,

Thank you.
Will the package update itself to the latest version or does it require a fresh install ?
The version i got was the one that came from Jam Software website just by clicking the download.
Im guess it does not offer up the latest release in that instance ?

Kind Regards
Shane

No it is not updateable, you need to manually install 4.0.0 (if you feel comfortable doing that, otherwise stick with 3.4.4)

I packed flavors for x32 and x64 bit, either for Strawberry Perl 5.30.x or Strawberry Perl 5.32.x
viewtopic.php?f=22&t=39859

Basically: install Perl, unpack SpamAssassin 4.0.0 into a directory, configure
Then first run sa-update, followed by spamd or run spamd as service

HI,

So i chased this today with the ISP.
They actually have not had any feedback from their Tier 3 support team as to what's going on.
They escalated it internally today so lets see if anything happens in the next 2 days.

Kind Regards
Shane
