Please also go to hMailAdmin>Settings>Advanced>IP Ranges. Press (click) the 'Default' Button. You are not using the Default IP Ranges. The Default IP Ranges are set up to provide secure sending and receiving of email.

You have a Security Certificate so you should be using SSL/TLS for authentication for the Internet IP Range if pressing the default doesn't make that entry selected.

Your TCPIP Port 25 should be set to StartTLS (Optional).

Your TCPIP Port 465 should be set to SSL/TLS.

Your TCPIP Port 587 preferably should be set to StartTLS (Optional).

Is the hostname of your hMailServer Domain1.com or is it something like mail.domain1.com. If the hostname of hMailServer is like mail.domain1.com then this is what is supposed to be in SMTP Protocol Delivery of email 'Local host name' entry.

This does not cause a problem but you should enable TLSv1.3 so when another connecting Email Server offers TLSv1.3 your hMailServer will be able to make use of the higher Security Protocol.

You should enable all your Logs and Post your logs after attempting to send and receive some email so we can see what the problem actually is along with that Error Log previously mentioned in the earlier Post.

Also question for you. Is hMailServer a new email Server installation for you. If so, you should not be changing the settings as you have done. You should get hMailServer working with the default settings first. Only add/change settings that are necessary such as Adding Domains, Adding Accounts, Adding the Local host name for the SMTP Protocol Entry. Once you get hMailServer working with the Default Settings and you know what the other Settings do then you can change them as needed. But hMailServer will pretty much work right after installation with the minimal necessary changes you need to make such as the ones above. This is my personal opinion because making changes to the Default settings before you get hMailserver actually running first makes it more difficult to track down problems.

If you have not already done so you should make sure you have set up SPF entries in your DNS TXT Records otherwise Receiving Email Servers may reject or mark your email as SPAM.

You do not need to do this - your ranges are fine (arguably even more secure than the default).

I can see you are failing because it looks like hMailServer cannot connect to the receiving Email Server for the Recipient email address domain. When hMailServer does the Delivery attempt I see failed connection messages.
"DEBUG" 9792 "2022-08-15 09:14:05.104" "Creating session 1015"
"TCPIP" 9792 "2022-08-15 09:14:05.104" "Connecting to 104.47.71.138:25..."

"DEBUG" 10120 "2022-08-15 09:14:26.125" "Ending session 1015"
Have you checked if Port 25 is open on your hMailServer computer or that your ISP is not blocking Port 25?

Thanks for the kind reply,
I am using Azure VM.

Inbound rule and Outbound rule have been set to allow the connection
for ports 25, 587, 465, 110, and 995 (both on Azure and VM firewall)

The 25 port has been tested by the below tools:
https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/
VM IP: 20.213.34.25

Well you still have a problem when trying to connect to the Email Server presumably hosting your Recipient's Email Account and that is why the Recipient doesn't receive the email. You will notice also in the logs that hMailServer is attempting to Retry periodically to connect until it exceeds the Retry limit usually defaulted to about 5 or 6 hours.

You are probably going to have to check with the Recipient Email Server to find out why. However, I just attempted to connect to the Receiving Email Server failing to connect using Telnet and it reports that it cannot connect on Port 25. Therefore you will most likely have to get the Recipient Email Server to open Port 25 on its Firewall(s).

Actually, I used port 587 or 465 for the test to send Emails.

No you don't.

You use Port 587 or 465 to submit emails to hMailServer which in turn delivers the email to the Recipient Email Server on Port 25. See the below Log Entries for the Delivery to the Recipient Email Server:

Code: Select all

"TCPIP"	9792	"2022-08-15 09:14:05.104"	"Connecting to 104.47.71.138:25..."
"DEBUG"	10120	"2022-08-15 09:14:26.125"	"SMTPDeliverer - Message 100 - Connection failed: Host name: 104.47.71.138, message: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond"
"DEBUG"	10120	"2022-08-15 09:14:26.125"	"Ending session 1015"
"DEBUG"	9792	"2022-08-15 09:14:26.125"	"External delivery process completed"
"DEBUG"	9792	"2022-08-15 09:14:26.125"	"Summarizing delivery result"
"DEBUG"	9792	"2022-08-15 09:14:26.125"	"Summarized delivery results"
I would also suspect that there is no Email Server on the IP Address hMailServer attempted Delivery to because its Port 25 appears to not be open. If in fact there is an Email Server at that IP Address then it cannot receive any email at all and cannot function as an Email Server since its Port 25 appears to be not open. I could be wrong but that is what I believe I see.

I have uninstalled hMailServer, and installed it again,

The screen shows TCP/IP posts 25,110 and 143 are already in use.

Do this issue that makes SMTP not work?

Check your firewall settings and port forwarding settings maybe something wrong there

I tried to Telnet to your VM IP Address as you listed in your earlier Post and I found that externally I cannot connect to VM IP: 20.213.34.25 on Port 25 which means that you cannot receive any email using that IP Address for your Email Server.

Plus I tried that tool you use and I believe all it does is check that your incoming Ports are open. ISPs usually block outgoing Port 25 and that would explain why you cannot send email and your connection fails.

I also tried to use MXToolbox.Com to connect to your IP Address 20.213.34.25 and it cannot connect either. You definitely should check your Port Forwarding if you've already checked the Computer Firewalls and you still should check if your ISP is blocking Port 25 because while I can't say whether your outgoing Port 25 is blocked, it starting to look like it's a pretty safe bet it is unless your Windows Firewalls are blocking outgoing Port 25, too.

Also you stated that you tried to send to Hotmail and GMail but you didn't say how you verified that the email wasn't sent. I don't care if the Recipient Email ID doesn't receive the email. What you need to look at are your Log Entries like I did and verify if the Log Entries show the email was Delivered to the Recipient. That will give the indication as to where the problem is. Right now all I have seen is that you are not delivering your email to the Email Accounts you were testing with as reported to us. We know nothing about Hotmail and GMail attempts. Also the Client Application such as Outlook should probably receive back a Mailer-Daemon or some kind of failure notification. We should see that as well as reasons for failure are frequently found in the Mailer-Daemons.

I, also, ran your domain through MXToolBox and it also reported that your Email Domain mail.winweigh.com.au cannot be connected to which means you cannot receive email on your hMailServer for that domain.

Additional testing.

I just tried to Telnet to nwigroup.com.au and mail.nwigroup.com.au on Port 25 and Telnet connect failed to open. So your recipient Email Server appears to be not reachable. If I am doing everything correctly.

I tried IP Address 104.47.71.138 and the Telnet connect failed to open on port 25. So, this server appears to be unreachable. If I am doing everything correctly.

thank you very much.
No!

DNS:
1. If your hMailServer is in your Local Network External IP Address 20.213.34.25, this appears to be correct to set up a subdomain (Host Name) of mail.winweigh.com.au
2. DNS MX Record appears to be correct
3. TXT Record will most likely work but apparently current RFC discourages use of the ptr mechanism is my current understanding. You should have instead and at least in addition to the ptr mechanism, your ISP set up a PTR Reverse DNS record. Some Receiving email servers will not accept email from a Sending Email Server that doesn't have a PTR Record setup. In addition the setup you specify for the spf record doesn't really serve the purpose of an SPF Record. Your entry tells Receiving Email Servers that all Email Servers are allowed to be used to send email for your Domain which virtually makes the spf Record worthless. Your spf Record is stating that a Receiving Email Server should not reject any email for your winweigh.com.au domain sent by any Sending Email Server. You should list only those Email Server host names individually that are authorized to send email for your winweigh.com.au domain. You should not be authorizing every Email Server in existence to send for your domain winweigh.com.au.
4. I cannot advise you on dmarc as I haven't explored dmarc myself yet.
5. You didn't show this DNS Record but you should have an A Record defining the actual Domain name of winweigh.com.au. This was probably created for you by your Domain Registrar. At least my Domains were.

On hMailServer:
1. Domain should be winweigh.com.au
2. Local host name would be correct

After you make any corrections, if you still are having trouble you should run the Diagnostics Report with this link and Post the Report:

thats not a hmailserver welcome message ......
uninstall Microsoft ESMTP Mail Service, or disable it, or configure it to respond on another port than 25.

Re: Have issue using Azure VM - Can not send and receive Email

You have reported that you have uninstalled hMailServer and reinstalled hMailServer.

However, other than adding a Domain, SMTP Local Host Name, etc. you keep changing the settings or you haven't completely uninstalled hMailServer and you are picking up some of the old settings. You should have more TCPIP Port Settings than what the Diagnostics report shows.

Since this appears to be a new install of hMailServer not previously working, I suggest you once again completely uninstall it and be sure to go to C:\Program Files (x86) then delete the hMailServer Folder if present. Then install hMailServer again and do not make any changes to the Default settings other than to add your Domain (with the corrections I gave you), Email Account, SMTP Local Host Name (as I indicated was the correct name), etc. Do not attempt to make changes to the default settings themselves except you should enable TLSv1.3. If you don't have any problems such as Port 25 outgoing blocked by ISP or Firewall issues, the default settings pretty much work right after installation as long as you define your Domain, Accounts, Local Host Name, etc.

If you have saved off your hMailServer settings, I DO NOT WANT YOU TO RESTORE THOSE SAVED OFF SETTINGS BACK TO THE NEW INSTALLATION!!!

I do not say you will be able to send your email to the account you have been trying to send to since that Email Account's Email Server appears to not be reachable.

Also be aware the tool you used to test the ports on hMailServer only seem to test incoming Port access. Not outgoing Port access.

Then let's see if you can send to your email account and Hotmail and GMail. But be prepared to Save off the Log Entries for the failed messages if any and show any Error Messages the Email Client may receive back such as a Mailer-Daemon.

Jim, that report looks VERY default. He hasn't changed anything.

His 'My Computer' IP Range should have for Require Authentication on External To External as Enabled (or True) not Disabled (or False) on the Diagnostics Report (and by the way apparently the Diagnostics Script has been corrected to now show this entry).

I believe he should have 7 TCPIP Ports by Default not 4 TCPIP Ports by Default. Ports should be 25, 110, 143, 465, 587, 993, and 995.

At least my Default TCPIP Ports were always at 7 TCPIP Ports.

He's having trouble sending to Receiving Email Servers. I find that the Email Server he's sending to can't be connected to as well. His logs shows he is attempting to connect to the Receiving Email Server but it fails to respond back to hMailServer. His own server mail.winweigh.com.au can't be connected to with Telnet either. He states his ports are open for incoming on his hMailServer which should be mail.winweigh.com.au as far as I can tell but yet I can't Telnet to it on Port 25. I can't Telnet to the server he's sending to either. He did definitely look like he had a wrong DNS set up which supposedly he has corrected but apparently he still has problems.

As I stated I don't know if he changed the settings or if when he uninstalled he failed to delete hMailServer Folder from Program Files (x86) and he didn't get a clean install because of that. I just know I once had to do that when I was having some problems and I wanted to make sure I got everything Default again for which I know those settings generally work well.

One thing I am not sure of is what the considerations are for installing hMailServer in an Azure VM environment. So, as far as I know, his problems could be that he has an issue with Azure VM in communicating to the Internet.

No, what is shown is very much default - or at least it was (no 465, 587 etc). Heaven only knows what is flying around with all these forks and home builds being offered now.

uninstall Microsoft ESMTP Mail Service, or disable it, or configure it to respond on another port than 25.

Please see below, Thanks
when telnetting to port 25 to your server it still says that it is an Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service.........

Your server responds:

you cannot have 2 mail server components using the same ports

uninstall the ESMTP MAIL Serivce, or disable it or configure it to use any other port than 25 ( which hmailserver WILL require )

I know this has to be wrong.

I am currently on hMailServer 5.6.9-B2602.

On the TCPIP Ports hMailAdmin screen, I pressed the Default Button and got the following Ports as Default 25, 110, and 143.

hMailServer can't even function perhaps technically as an Email Server I would think with these Ports unless you are going to use Port 25 as the SMTP Submission Port which I believe is not even considered as the SMTP Submission Port by the RFCs except as a legacy allowance for old archaic applications. At least I believe it is not the recognized standard SMTP Submission Port now with the Recognized Standard SMTP Submission Port being Port 587 if I am not mistaken.

I think the Default function on the TCPIP Ports Screen should be looked at so they should be in RFC Compliance for at least the recognized standard Ports.

I believe I read that the RFCs made Port 587 the standard SMTP Submission Port. So, if anything I would think Port 587 needs to be made a default TCPIP Port otherwise wouldn't hMailServer not be in RFC Compliance without Port 587 for SMTP Submission.

You say those 4 ports are added on a new install/during upgrade. Do you mean on either a new install or an upgrade to an existing older version installation. If you meant also on an upgrade to an existing older version installation. I in the past week or two upgraded from B2574 to B2602 and the TCPIP Ports are as I listed the 7 TCPIP Ports in my prior Post. Presumably this is because in B2574 I was using these same 7 TCPIP Ports.

I have been using these same TCPIP Ports for many years with the possible exception of adding Port 587 when it became the official SMTP Port. Actually I think it might have been all along but hMailServer hadn't caught up to that standard some years ago as best I recall.

Now don't be stupid will ya, NO it won't change ports if they are already defined, but it does on initialization or when upgrading from a older version that had not had the 4 default ports (not sure for the upgrading part, but it is not that difficult to understand what i meant)

https://github.com/hmailserver/hmailser ... pp#L46-L55

That check is quite poor though :roll:

Code: Select all

      // check if the settings are already default.
      if (vecObjects.size() == 3)
      {
         if (vecObjects[0]->GetPortNumber() == 25 && vecObjects[0]->GetProtocol() == STSMTP &&
             vecObjects[1]->GetPortNumber() == 110 && vecObjects[1]->GetProtocol() == STPOP3 &&
             vecObjects[2]->GetPortNumber() == 143 && vecObjects[2]->GetProtocol() == STIMAP)
         {
            // no changes are needed.
            return;
         }
      }

Addendum: 3 ports, it doesn't on 587, see Upgrade4300to4301MySQL.sql (so if you currently have hMailServer 4.3, it automatically inserted that port when upgrading to newer versions)

Well you said both new install/during upgrade. I was talking about installing over an existing older version which is an upgrade. In my experience I always got the same Ports I had defined in TCPIP Ports. I also got the same security connection specifications and if we are talking about Default ports then when I pressed the Default Button there wasn't any Security Connections specified or I'm more senile than I thought.

Heaven only knows what is flying around with all these forks and home builds being offered now.
Not sure what you mean by this, i know for 100% SorenR's and mine do not change any of the default settings
Fear not - there was no dig intended and certainly was not with you or Soren in mind. In essence there are many forks, some actively promoted by people around here, and I personally do not keep in touch with what they have changed.

Did you add a Azure Firewall specific inbound and outbound rule for the ports 25, 587, 110 and 143?

Some Cloud infrastructure Provider as for example Amazon AWS also need to lift Global blocks for port 25. In this case you need to get in touch with the Support team.

For Azure Linux and Windows VMs most ports are closed down. For Linux VMs only port 22 for SSH traffic will be unblocked and for Windows VMs Remote Desktop port 3389 tcp is unblocked by default.

thanks for your kind helps,

I have contacted Azure support, they said 25 port was blocked.

I am wondering why hMailServer default 25 port.

Finally, I added SendGrid SMTP Relayer, it is working.

Thanks again for your guy's kindly help.

I am wondering why hMailServer default 25 port.
This is what I and others on this Forum have been telling you that your Port 25 was being blocked.

To answer your question though, all Email Servers communicate with other Email Servers using Port 25. So it must be open. When Port 25 is blocked, the choices usually become either arrange for Port 25 to be unblocked or use the SMTP Relayer function using a Port that isn't blocked as you've apparently done.

That check is quite poor though :roll:

Code: Select all

      // check if the settings are already default.
      if (vecObjects.size() == 3)
      {
         if (vecObjects[0]->GetPortNumber() == 25 && vecObjects[0]->GetProtocol() == STSMTP &&
             vecObjects[1]->GetPortNumber() == 110 && vecObjects[1]->GetProtocol() == STPOP3 &&
             vecObjects[2]->GetPortNumber() == 143 && vecObjects[2]->GetProtocol() == STIMAP)
         {
            // no changes are needed.
            return;
         }
      }

So for me to get straight before trying to fix this , let say you have configured STARTTLS (Optional) for all these 3 ports, you click Defaults button in GUI, nothing gets changed right?
(eg: that is not checked in code above)

Should it reset to defaults, eg: also reset TLS/SSL settings? Or is fine as is...?

Code: Select all

      // check if the settings are already default.
      if (vecObjects.size() == 4)
      {
         if (vecObjects[0]->GetPortNumber() == 25 && vecObjects[0]->GetProtocol() == STSMTP && vecObjects[0]->GetConnectionSecurity() == CSNone &&
            vecObjects[1]->GetPortNumber() == 110 && vecObjects[1]->GetProtocol() == STPOP3 && vecObjects[1]->GetConnectionSecurity() == CSNone &&
            vecObjects[2]->GetPortNumber() == 143 && vecObjects[2]->GetProtocol() == STIMAP && vecObjects[2]->GetConnectionSecurity() == CSNone)
         {
            // no changes are needed.
            return;
         }
      }

With default, (eg: as added by sql script) port 587 added

Code: Select all

   void
   TCPIPPorts::Refresh()
   //---------------------------------------------------------------------------()
   // DESCRIPTION:
   // Reads all SURBL servers from the database.
   //---------------------------------------------------------------------------()
   {
      String sSQL = "select * from hm_tcpipports order by portaddress1 asc, portaddress2 asc, portnumber asc";
      DBLoad_(sSQL);
   }

   void
   TCPIPPorts::SetDefault()
   //---------------------------------------------------------------------------()
   // DESCRIPTION:
   // Reads all SURBL servers from the database.
   //---------------------------------------------------------------------------()
   {
      Refresh();

      // check if the settings are already default.
      if (vecObjects.size() == 4)
      {
         if (vecObjects[0]->GetPortNumber() == 25 && vecObjects[0]->GetProtocol() == STSMTP &&
             vecObjects[1]->GetPortNumber() == 110 && vecObjects[1]->GetProtocol() == STPOP3 &&
             vecObjects[2]->GetPortNumber() == 143 && vecObjects[2]->GetProtocol() == STIMAP &&
             vecObjects[3]->GetPortNumber() == 587 && vecObjects[3]->GetProtocol() == STSMTP)
         {
            // no changes are needed.
            return;
         }
      }

      // Delete all existing ports and then add new ones.
      DeleteAll();

      String error_message;

      std::shared_ptr<TCPIPPort> pTCPIPPort = std::shared_ptr<TCPIPPort>(new TCPIPPort);
      pTCPIPPort->SetPortNumber(25);
      pTCPIPPort->SetProtocol(STSMTP);
