Migrating hMailServer to a new box

Post by phlegmer » 2019-07-11 17:10

I was looking over the documentation on what steps to take to move hMailServer to a new box. My thought was to just back it up using the built in tool, then do a restore on the new box. The doc wants this done manually instead which is fine. The part that I'm not sure about is the Database piece. Our install uses SQL CE which isn't quite clear on how to migrate.

Do I need to install SSMS to backup the db and then restore on the new box?

Can I just copy the database file over to the new box?

Is there a reason why using the built in backup and restore option won't work for migrating?

Thanks!

Backup restore is best option

Install same version on new system, backup old system (include all options including compression), copy compressed backup to new system and then restore to previously installed new system
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

Thanks! That's what I was planning on doing initially until I came across the document that says otherwise. Perhaps the doc needs to be updated?

Thanks again

Link is in my first post and here for convenience. :)

Step 3 states:
"The hMailServer configuration and data will be copied manually from the old server to the new one. The backup is only needed if something goes very wrong during this process and you need to restore the old server."

sorry
thanks for reposting

That page is VERY old and outdated - I'll fix
(It even talks about builtin MySQL, not for more than 10 years >> https://www.hmailserver.com/changelog?p ... &build=309)
