HMailserver as Docker image

Post by evb » 2018-09-02 10:56

Hi,

Are there plans to make hmailserver available as a docker image, so that it can run on a linux box?

Regards,
hmailserver 5.3.3-B1879
MySQL server Ver 5.5, for Win32

No. It is specifically a Windows application. (There are already plenty of linux available applications. Hmailserver is not required on Linux.)
5.7 on test.

There is a lot of Software on Linux and tge fact you are not aware of it sounds not that you know much about Linux. Use Postfix and Dovecot, i can handle all your needs.

Hello Dravion,

If you are aware of a mailserver that is as advanced in features as hmailserver for linux, I would appreciate your advice.
Devcot is definitely not as powerful as hmailserver - for example I am missing features like Rules, where you might set header values depending on various criteria.

You can in conjunction with postfix all do that or use python or perl for scripting. Dovecot is a POP3/IMAP server only and needs a MTA like Postfix or Exim to functioning. You can define rules or use regular expressions, use can use postgres, mysql or MariaDB as Userdatabase or just a flat password file. There are Books out there which describes it
step by step. Postfix with Dovecot together is the most used SMTP+POP3/IMAP solution on Linux/Unix.

The linux options are trash in comparison. I having to install and maintain 6+ applications in place of one is why I changed to hmailserver in the first place.

The hMailServer Community Developers (HCD) Project is committed to bring hMailServer to (POSIX) Portable Operating System Interface for all UNIX alike
Operating Systems such as LINUX or MacOS. Most free or OpenSource Source Software is built that way and hMailServer will be to.

Our Mission is to make hMailServer HCD as easy to use on any other Platform then it is today on Windows, drivven by a Democratic Community Process and
of course Open Source all the way. A first releases can be expected next year, same time.

I was looking at these options but since hMailServer has been working really well with Rainloop webmail for a very long time now, I think I'll stick with it on Windows.

Any thought on running it as a Windows docker image? I would think getting hMailServer up and running on one of the Windows based images would be doable without too much of effort. This would really help from a deployment perspective.

Just a thought

Interesting idea

Docker images have moved forward a bit since I last checked - they are certainly very popular with the LINUX crowd

hMailserver works in Server core, so there is no reason why this wouldn't work
(I suspect that hmailserver without the GUI would also work in Nano Server, but I've not tried.)

I have previously run hmailserver on Hyper-V Server (bare metal)
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.
