Outlook 2013/2016-Connector Extension

Post by Dravion » 2017-01-06 11:32

Some users are having problems accessing hMailServer by IMAP or POP3 Protocol and some Users are looking for alternative ways to access hMailServer.I also noticed the need for a public Adressbook and Public Calender within Outlook.
Maybe there is a way to do it as part of an Outlook MAPI-Connector Addon for hMailServer. It has been done for other Emailserver products like Axigen, Zimbra, IBM-Domino or Communigate and
of cause MS-Exchange.

Now i ask all Outlook-Users (Mac/Windows) out there Do you want this feature and what versions of Outlook do you use? Do you use also MS-Active Sync and Mobile Outlook on Smartphones?

gmail also have an outlook connector addin

I would use this.
I use Outlook from 2003 >> through to Outlook 2015

(I mostly use Thunderbird because it behaves so much better than Outlook, but so many workplaces use Outlook)
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

I dont know if Outlook 2003 Support is a good idea, because its out of support a few years now...

Outlook 2003 - EOL
Lifecycle Start Date..............: 11/20/2003
Mainstream Support End Date: 04/14/2009
Extended Support End Date...: 04/08/2014

Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 - EOL
Extended Support End Date: 10/10/2017

I think the Connector needs some development time.
Maybe focus and Outlook 2010 and later is a good idea.

What about MacOS? Did you see a lot of users using Outlook on Mac?
This is important because the Windows based Outlook Versions using parts of the
Windows Operating system (MAPI) which is not avaiable on Mac's.

I'd be happy with any connector

Outlook 2010 onwards is fine.
I don't have many / any clients with Macs, as the main line of business software that I support is windows based.
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

In my organization I often see situation when MS Outlook have a problem with classic IMAP folder synchronization - incorrect folder tree, broken pst indexes and losting stored mail. Also "Sent Folder" sync option was removed in MSO 2013 and higher. Google so long time ago make a conclusions about this problem, and make native gmail connector, working directly with MAPI, bypass MSOutlook.

I tested this bugs in other mail client, all IMAP features working good! Bugs only in MS Outlook.

May be sense made some proxy as "Normal IMAP >> MS Outlook IMAP"? It no need any changes in Hmail and in MS Outlook. Just discret service or program. In future also no need any changes in this "connector".

Would it be unrealistic to make hmailserver support exchange activesync? i am very new to hmail and have zero experience with c++, so i'm sorry in advance if this is a stupid question.

This would be the total Overkill. Read the Echange Active Sync Protocoll Definitions and you know why.

I think this thread can e closed as well.

Because other Thirdparty Outlook Connector Developers canceling their Products because Microsoft gives them a hard time with the shift to Office365/Cöpud and a new Plugin Interface which deprecates the old Plugin Interface.

I dont wanna touch it either anymore.

I'm sure you already know this, but outlook (since 2013?) supports ActiveSync. I'm using horde as an ActiveSync connector for both outlook and Android. And I'm running horde on the same windows 10 box as hmailserver. It runs very smoothly on outlook since I moved to letsencrypt certificates from self signed. It passes Microsoft's EAS connectivity test without errors.

Yeah, Activesync could be a better solution.
I believe the Zimbra OpenSource Project developed a native Activesync Connector which could be a nice addition for hMailServer, i need to take a carefull look into the code to get an overview.
