Log to different files

Post by philg » 2010-05-21 01:13

Could we have a separate log file for each component (SMTP, IMAP, POP, TCPIP, DEBUG etc.)
I've just about completed my migration to hMailServer from an old Merak server and its really difficult to diagnose issues because the one log file has so much in it.

Apologies if this has already been requested - I cant find it using the search facility.

You can always use my log analyzer http://damnation.org.uk/log/
If at first you don't succeed, bomb disposal probably isn't for you! ヅ

True (thanks :)), but it would be nice not to have to rely on 3rd party log analysers....

That way I can use tail to monitor the specific file "live" and not have to keep refreshing/uploading it every time it changes :S

I'd vote YES 10x for this if I could! I really hate having all the services stuffed into 1 log. I'd MUCH rather have a log file for each service. Especially when the POP3/IMAP lists are so F'in crazy huge! Reminds me, I was going to put in a feature request for log LEVEL so we have better control over how much detail is shown. That way I don't have 20MB per day of POP3 LISTs. Here lemme share just one:

Code: Select all

Pointless to have that every 5 minutes in the logs unless you're trying to diagnose a problem. And those show up even with debug off!

Soz I had a bad day & needed to vent. lol Anyway, yes please consider logging per service.. With my current mail server I purge pop3 & post processor logs weekly & archive all the smtp/agent logs with messages. Having POP3 & IMAP makes me have to keep most logs & sift thru more crap to get to the important stuff. 1/2 tempted to write a script that scans the log file & splits em apart by the service name but would be simpler if hmail just did it that way to start with.
Thx

Kewl thx matt! That was handy. :)

I chose to reply here instead of those old threads but to me it's harder to track issues all in one log file because you're scrolling up & down vs viewing the logs side by side. Plus the larger the log files are the slower it is to open & search/scroll in them just by nature of more data to sift thru. Perhaps it's what you're used to like a well broken in pair of under shorts but after years of using a mail server where each service had it's own log file I have a very hard time dealing with hmail logs. Perhaps I'll get used to them but doesn't mean I have to like it. hehe

Hello fans of HMS, about this feature was - many month ago - talked.
But not implemented yet!

When acitvated SMTP, POP3 and IMAP, the log ist not readable.
You must import to Excel (or another tool :)!) and have to convert it.

Kind regards :)

I personally like them all in one file so as long as we have an option to leave it the way it is or have it split i'll be happy :)
If at first you don't succeed, bomb disposal probably isn't for you! ヅ

Hello Doom, the option to determine one or 3 log-files is a good idea!

Kind regards :)
