BATV (Bounce Address Tag Validation) Check
BATV (Bounce Address Tag Validation) Check
DeanoX and ^DooM^ and requested for me to post the following feature request:
BATV (Bounce Address Tag Validation) Check
BATV is a mechanism wherein an outgoing Email server adds a tag to the Envelope From address of all outgoing Emails. For example, if an Email address goes out with From address as <info@allaboutspam.com>, the Envelope From is changed to <prvs=SBDGAUJ=info@allaboutspam.com>, where 'SBDGAUJ' is the added tag. This tag is generated using an internal mechanism and is different for each email sent.
If any bounce is received by the Incoming email servers, they are checked to see if the Bounce address has the proper tag (in above case 'SBDGAUJ'). If not, the email is rejected.
BATV ensures that your Email users do not become a victim of bounce floods.
Here is the specifacation:

Please, let me know if you have questions.

I'm not sure how "popular" this feature will be, but I feel it's important for those of us who did the research to find out what it is. I sure want it!
Re: BATV (Bounce Address Tag Validation) Check
I'm seeing a lot of newsletter type mail outs here use this ..
No good to me, but I can see the value.

For newsletters this will become more and more useful.
http://www.allaboutspam.com already include it in their server test report and this is the only thing that my outgoing mail from hMS fail's on!

It is a feature for mailing list manager and not for generic email server.lawsonium wrote:For newsletters this will become more and more useful.
Proper non-spamming newsletters should use some automated mailing list management tools.
Re: BATV (Bounce Address Tag Validation) Check
Bet when SRS gets implemented it could dual purpose as BATV. Otherwise how could you do both it'd be a mess. lol

I can definitely get behind this feature. I have not gotten smashed with a bounce flood yet but it never hurts to be prepared.

Re: BATV (Bounce Address Tag Validation) Check
The feature I would like implemented is for hMailServer to allow me to remove the BATV prefix from the From Address of incoming emails prior validating the user. Many of my customers are implementing BATV on their Exchange servers. All my lists are closed lists where only members of the list are authorized to send to it. The problem I have is a list member with email address <SomeOne@SomeWhere.com> is sending his/her email with the BATV prefix in the From Address, so his/her email address looks like <PRVS=421542=SomeOne@SomeWhere.com> and is rejected as not authorized 550. This is a growing problem.

Re: BATV (Bounce Address Tag Validation) Check
The number of companies in my industry that use BATV to send emails to my hMailServer has been increasing over the years. The number is now above 50. I would like hMailServer to strip the BATV prefix from incoming email addresses so the user is correctly authorized. The hMailServer community has been discussing implementing BATV as a feature for some 10 years now. Any progress to report?

Re: BATV (Bounce Address Tag Validation) Check
I'm no Martiin, but not even sure what you are asking for could be done using rules/functions, would perhaps even require some low level code changes to the way hMail authenticates. BATV would be a nice feature, but given this is a decade old feature request I would say that the devs have perhaps determined that the effort yielded for the advantages gained are not viable for the time they have to spend on the project.
