Negative Spam Score [90%]

Post by ^DooM^ » 2009-07-06 13:54

There are whitelists popping up such as http://www.whitelisted.org/ There is currently no way to tell hMail to trust ip's when given a result from these whitelists. A negative spam score would allow this.

How is whitelisted.org any better than SORBS?

Whitelisted may be up front about charging just to be whitelisted - and SORBS may be a bit 'hidden' about their charge to unlist if they receive a spam to one of their admin accounts. Money still dissapears from the mail owners hands though.

In my opinion, both go against the idea of getting rid of spam, and instead are just an excuse to get money to exchange hands.

I know it costs money to have hosting for services such as these, but whitelisted is clearly a 'for profit' system based on the amount they are charging on a regular basis. I'll not be helping them out, that's for sure.

Key words being "such as" I'm sure more not for profit whitelists will emerge in the future and having the "system" in place to make use of them is what i am requesting here and thinking i am advocating paidfor whitelisting from this post is somewhat skewed logic.

*shrug* you linked to a site that requests money in order to be listed - shouldn't have used them as the example if you weren't advocating them ;) Quite simple logic really! No skewing at all! No offence was intended even... After the various threads on SORBS (which I agree with - 'for profit' even if it is a charity donation is a non-cool idea in the fight against spam), it was just a bit of a shock, that's all.

Whitelisting as a concept is an interesting one - but if you get delisted in a whitelist due to being on a blacklist (due to the whitelist finding out) then it kind of defeats the purpose of having the whitelist in the first place as the vast majority of legit mail admins will never take the time to add their IPs to the whitelist - and will probably not create spam either. I think SPF being implemented correctly is possibly the best whitelist out there... And its free. And hardly any legit mail admins implement that either :(

Negative scoring options would be cool - I'd like some more anti-spam options :)

I'll support negative scoring

I'd like three way scores for most SPAM tests - tried and pass, didn't try, tried and failed. Particularly for SPF, DKIM etc

Whitelist idea is interesting...
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

Negative scoring would be useful in conjunction with geo DBL's. Reduce the score if it comes from specific countries.

I agree with ras07. Negative scoring would be awesome for fighting spam on a geographical basis. If you were to do an analysis of you log, I'm sure you (as I did) would find that the vast majority of your spam is coming from perhaps only a dozen or so countries.

This is exactly the same request I did some months ago and has been archived in between

I would really like to see this feature aswell .. now as there are spam scores used this should be rather simple to extend/implement.

I know this is quite an old thread, but I'd like to reiterate this request. There are now a number of free whitelisting DBL's (DunBL's?) around (hostkarma.junkemailfilter.com for instance) so this would be really handy.

I haven't looked at the code so I don't want to presume, but it's possible that the implementation of this feature might be as simple as changing the configuration dialog box to allow the '-' character.

ras07,
Yeah this one is on my list. Awhile back I checked & shouldn't be too bad to add but would need to test & see. (If I recall the headache is I think the database values are set to positive int but been awhile so I'd have to look again. Database changes are best avoided for compatibility reasons.) Having working service to test with helps so thx.

Sounds good Bill - let me know if you want someone to test it out. I'm running the latest beta already.

Ok cool thx. I might have time in next few weeks, still working out new schedule. Plz remind me if ya don't hear an update. :D
Thx
Bill

EDIT: Just remembered.. My builds don't seem to be working since martin's 1944 release & not had time to figure out what changed so getting something working might take longer than expected since he's next to impossible to contact..

Still on my todo.. Good to see the votes are racking up for it to confirm it'd be useful. :)

Not on my end. Too many projects ATM and martin wanted to let 5.4 settle after being released.

Thx for reminding me i forgot about it. then again the plan is to sit down & look at the top 25 things in the voting & chat with martin and gang to figure out a road map. I know this one is quite high on the list & should be pretty painless to do so we'll see.

FYI negative DNS blacklists (whitelists) are now available for testing

I've found that you can do this with SpamAssassin

I changed my Spamassassin mark score to -100 (that's negative 100), and the score that is passed back to hmailserver can now be a negative number, and this will reduce the total hMailserver spam score by that amount.

So if you have a whitelist in SpamAssassin that adds -10 to the SpamAssassin score, -10 will be passed back to hMailserver to reduce the hmailserver score (if you 'use SpamAssassin score')
