hMailServer 4.3, build 230

Post by martin » 2006-08-22 08:20

For the last time: This is hopefully the last alpha. ;-)
  • I've re-added some of the IOCP-code I removed while troubleshooting the SMTP-stop problem. Since I'm pretty sure what caused SMTP to stop, I feel this is relativly safe to re-add this. This new build says "Goodbye" to email clients before disconnecting them due to a timeout (required by the RFC).
  • hMailServer is now a bit smarter when it comes to handling the queue of data that should be sent to the client. In previous versions (including 3.x/4.x), hMailSever sometimes sent several small packages of data to clients. I've changed this so that hMailServer now creates larger packets of data, which should improve performance a lot in some email clients.
  • I've also added a few new features that I felt it was more or less neccessary to have in 4.3:
    • It's now possible to create a list of IP-addresses to exclude from greylisting. The list that comes with the installation is empty, but I will probably create some tool that parses online lists of IP-addresses, such as:
http://cvs.puremagic.com/viewcvs/greyli ... ist_ip.txt . I think this change was required for GreyListing to be fully usable.
    • It's now also possible to configure hMailServer to listen on several TCP/IP ports. I've gotten quite a lot of email regarding this and I've simply become tired of telling people to configure their firewall/router to do the forwarding so now you can listen on several ports (requires server restart).
    • And if that wasn't enough, it's now possible to specify a signature on account and domain level which will be attached to the message. This was a thing I promised to a user a while back...
This build contains changes to the database structure. I've tested upgrading on quite a number of different databases, but if you run in production I suggest you wait some day before installing this build unless someone runs into somthing. And yes, I know that this is a lot of changes considering how near beta it is... Sorry. :)

Build available here:
http://dev.hmailserver.com/hMailServer-4.3-B230.exe

The installation program will ask you for the hMailServer administration password to be able to upgrade the database structure.

It blocks a lot of legit spam :D

A white list is realy a must have if I want to block spam ( without use of assap/spam assasin etc... ) efectivly.

The problem I have that sometimes one of National Banks that send email's to our accounting department get on one of DNS Blacklist and IT department there is realy quite lame

mmm i haven't upgrade yet but what i've undertand is this: whitelist belong to graylisting and stop. If a ip it's on whitelist wont be graylisted. The other antispam feature will be checked as usual.. Is this correct?

Thanks. Saw that myself yesterday. I made some changes and the problem disappeared. Still appear to exists though. Users have reported it on 4.2 as well. Will see if I can figure out what causes it.

Could you send me the complete log at martin@hmailserver.com? You will get this error if you try to access a POP3 mailbox which is already beeing accessed by someone else.

Really strange since i had this bug with 4.2 for a month and without doing anything, it worked a day and very well, and now i'm using it everyday so i'm spetic with this issue :x

I hope upgrading to 4.3 won't make this again :(

Erroneous "mailbox locked" messages here too yesterday (4.3 B229. I know that it did not help so much, but it's not an isolated problem

Just upgraded and everything went smoothly. Quick question though: Are IP ranges entered in the form "192.168" (as in the list you provided) valid forms for hMailserver whitelisting?

The IP addresses you can enter in the greylistingwhitelistinglist (that's a long list name..) are simple wildcards. So 192.168 wouldn't work. Instead, you would have to use 192.168* (or perhaps a more pretty version: 192.168.*).

As I wrote earlier, I'll probably put together a tool that imports the text file and inserts them into hMailServer using the COM API.

(First, I added these IP addresses to the hMailServer database during installation, but since the list of IP addresses changes over time, this felt a bit to static. When hMailServer 4.3 has been released for a few months, the list might have become outdated.)

Upgraded to 4.3 b230. Went smooth.

Performance problems reported with b229 in relation to retrieving a list of items to be displayed in the SquirrelMail interface are no longer evident with b230. It is quite fast now.

FYI, I think the link to the greylistwhitelist txt file includes the trailing "period" and therefore is causing the link to be invalid.

Thanx!

Jz.

I left a commercial mail server and was happily running 4.2.2 B199 on Windows Server 2000 and it was doing a decent job, although I was looking forward to 4.3.

Then my server crashed (Wester digital drives seem to be dropping like flies these days) and I thought that I may as well upgrade to WIndows Sever 2003. All went well except for hMailServer 4.2.2 B199 install (clean install) errored on install with something like Object "~" missing.... I tried it on two different windows server 2003 boxes and it gets the same error and will not install. So I needed a running mail server and installed 4.3 B225 and then upgraded to B229 and then to B230.

Everything seems fine except I can not send to hotmail.com.

I read other postings about a similar problem with other versions of hMailserver, and I disabled the clamwin virus checking but still have this problem that I did not have with 4.2.2 B199. My reverse DNS is rather generic but it was OK yesterday with 4.2.2 B199

I would hate to go back and rebuild a windows 2000 box just to run 4.2.2 B199, and I like the features in 4.3 but I need to send mail to hotmail.

So any help would be appreciated, thanks

David
Below is the error I got back from hMailserver...

abc@hotmail.com (not the actual email..)
Error Type: Winsock
Error Description: Connection Timed Out
Additional Information : Connect()

Tried 5 time(s)

Here is a log of the smtp conversation and it looks to me like the mail was delivered ??? but the recepient says they aren't getting anything.

The whitelist fixed an unknown problem - We let users on our downstream network use our SMPT without an account since it is fast and local. Had to whitelist ourselves!

Nope.... no Cisco Pix

I am running on a SDSL 768 up/down line from Covad with a Netopia Router/firewall - sort of...

But no configuration changes to router.

The only change (pretty major one) was installing a fresh Server 2003 and installing 4.3

But if I have to, I will install a fresh Server 2000 and go back to 4.2.2 B199.

I don't want to go through all the configs again as this box is DNS, Mail, And Web fro about 25 different domains.

Thanks

David

You may want to take a look at this post even though you are not running a pix.

http://www.hmailserver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1505

In my post I said that upping the DNS packet size did not work. I later found out that this actually did fix my issue but another configuration setting I had on my pix was counteracting this setting.

So in essence try upping the DNS packet size on your firewall/router if you can.

Any special instructions to upgrade ?

And in case of problems can I "downgrade" back.. wondering couse there are some DB changes ?

p.s. I will probably wait for beta and working PHPWebAdmin ( will it be ready for beta too or only for finial release ? ) .. its a must couse we have few domain admin's that use it on daily basis. ( realy a great addon to hmail server )

Hey Webchamp,

I had a similar problem sending to HotMail. What I discovered was that Norton Anti-Virus was scanning outbound emails. For some unknown reason this was causing a problem only when sending to Hotmail servers. Weird. Anyway, if you're not running Norton, perhaps some other similar process is being utilized on your server and causing the same headache. Here is a link to the thread. The resolution is at the bottom (not much more then I just shared with you here).

Good luck. Hope this tidbit helps.

Thanks for the info jzucker, but I had read that thread and just in case it was related to the antivirus, (I was using Clamwin), I disabled it, restarted hMailserver and had the same issue again.

As for Pix type issues, while I realize that the timing differences between B199 and B230 ...could... conceiveably contribute to a timing issue between hotmail and my server, could be affected by a packet size but I cant change it on my Netopia (or at least I dont know how to) so I hope that isnt it.

MARTIN: On another note, my HMailserver Admin B230 app crashed with an index out of range when I had the logging dialog box On th estatus screen) open and running for a very ong time trying to watch the smtp conversations. It probably was intended to be a snapshot type of text box, and used that way it is OK, but It appears to be able to fill up and crash the admin app. Or it may not be the cause at all, but it seems likely. Just an FYI.

Thanks

David

Actually. It just dawned on me that I haven't checked to see if I can send to Hotmail since the upgrade.

So I just tested. 3 Times. Guess what. Nope. Nothing is getting to Hotmail. I went to GMail and sent to Hotmail and BOOM, it got there right away.

Anyone else having this difficulty? This could be a delay issue so I will keep checking and report back.

Weird. And no, I do not have the Norton outbound email scanning back on. :-)

Glad you tested it jzucker, I was about to say "my bad" and I still might have to.

But I tried to telnet to mail.hotmail.com 25 from my mail server (several times) and it timed out.

But I can telnet from a couple of other ips on my network, so I was about to admit that I might be blacklisted by hotmail, for a little virus situation last week on my wife's computer.. that got me blacklisted a number of other places, and that may still be the case and I will continue to investigate it.

I just changed my IP on my mail server and in my DNS for all my doamins so now I will wait for some dns propogation and try again later to see it was that IP that was hurting me with hotmail.

But as of now, even though I have no specific proof yet, I am leaning towards being blacklisted... as my problem. But maybe not..

Here is a screen shot of the log

Image

Looks very similar to the last time I had this issue with the Norton. Is the line that says "Queued mail for delivery" saying that hMailserver thinks the email has been delivered?

I remember this was the same type of thing, but Hotmail tech support said NOTHING was being sent.

GlenC: Sorry. Please send the log again. The server where I run hMailServer had rebooted, and it requires me to log on for the network to work. (Crappy network card drivers).

The email HAS been delivered. It's Hotmails server that says the message has been accepted and that it will be delivered. If Hotmail's guys says that the email hasn't' been delivered, they don't know what they are talking about. My guess is that Hotmail considers your email to be spam. Have you checked the spam box of your email account? Have you used DNSreport.com to check whether all your DNS settings are correct?

hi webchamp, a question for most of all who had problem with hotmail: on the hostname field is there a fqdn ? You had to use a valid dns hostname to send mail to big isp like aol, msn , yahoo etc.. In the past i've got similar trouble with other product.. Hope it helps Bye

Martin,

Ok. Weird. Emails I sent earlier today DEFINITELY never made it to HotMail. Just tried a few more, about 1:53 AM and they went through fine.

I'll keep testing to see if I can see any patterns. But for now it seems the Hotmail tests messages that naver made it were just an anomoly and are floating in nether regions of the internet. I suppose it's still possible they'll turn up at some point.

Sorry for the HotMail scare.

Thanx for the heads-up on DNSreport.com. I found that I have an Open DNS, and that I need to create an SPF record, but other than that everything looks good.

Ok. But the log snippet you posted showed that the email made it to hotmail. I mean, hotmails server even told hMailServer that it had received the message. Are you sure that the missing emails just hasn't been deleted or moved to some trash can by Hotmails spam protection?

I'm sure. The ones i just sent made it. Same content (slightly different subject "Test 1", Test 2"). Same origination. Checked Junk Mail folder. No test messages sitting in there.

I just sent an email to myself at hotmail, and sure enough it showed up in the junk mail folder....

So as far as I am am concerned, B230 Rocks! All is good, and I am a happy guy.

Oh, and I just checked the message statistics, and here they are for the last few hours:

Messages processed: 58
Mesages containing Spam: 1064

I must say that I like that kind of spam reduction...

There is still the problem that you can't have two mailservers on the same server when routes are involved between them, because hMailServer treats all ip addresses assigned to this system as "local". Even the ones that are not used by hMailServer.
Martin, you said in another thread, that you may consider changing this behaviour in 4.3. Have you changed your mind about that?

Martin

I have been getting heaps of errors since I installed B230, it could be a dodgy conection to the internet, but since I have never had one of these errors since I installed hMs over a year ago, I think the timing is a bit sus.

I am going to upgrade to B231 and post back. Here is todays errror log ( I have these entries every day since I changed)

I will email B230 logs to you.

Michael

Slug, I cropped your log a bit. Felt like it was half a mile long with just the same info over and over again. :)

I don't think that the two different error messages are related to changes made in hMailServer. I haven't changed the DNS resolving code since early 4.2.

The DnsQuery function is a Windows API. Error 9002 means that there was a DNS server error. Error 9852 means that there was no DNS servers configured on the local system. Have you changed any DNS configuration information lately?

If you open up a command prompt and type
nslookup<enter>
set type=mx<enter>
hmailserver.com<enter>

... and paste the output here, I might be able to give you a hint on what's wrong.

Yes, always has...

Don’t stress to much about it at the moment, it might be something temporary. If it is still happening in the next few days with B231 (not that B231 should make a difference) I will let you know..

backup in 231 was failing with an error just like 230! Then i read someone had stopped the hmailserver service and it worked. I thied that (stopped the mysql service and hmailserver)and just got a different error about the server not being available, then i restarted the hmail service and mysql service, tried the backup and it now works without any errors at all. Very weird but certainly 231 seems to be ticking along nicely.

Well Done Martin. Amazing work...keep it up mate.

Yeah, I'm aware of the backup problem. I haven't figured out what's causing it yet. As soon as I have some solution to it, I will put up a new build.

Just keeping ya up to date.

Still having the problem with Hotmail on and off. The weird thing is the messages just completely disapear. I sent a message to Hotmail Tech Support to get their input on the problem (via their web-based submission). I'll let ya know what happens.

Also, I'm trying to use the External Accounts feature to pull email from other mail accounts. Problem is, most everyone is moving to Secure POP retrieval now. Is this something "External Accounts" can support (doesn't seem to through all my tests)? For squirrelmail Fetch all I had to do was set the host to:

tls://pop.gmail.com

instead of just - pop.gmail.com

and set the port to 995. Boom, that worked no problem. I tried that with the External Accounts and the debug reports showed failed connects.

I do the same for UCLA mail retrieval.

Now that I am moving to RoundCube I don't have the luxury of the FetchMail Plug-In.

hMailServer doesn't support SSL yet, so no, that won't work.

It's possible to use stunnel to accomplish this. Should work fine if you don't want to download from many different SSL POP3 servers:

Alright. Well, I can't see how they could be caused by some change in hMailServer. The DnsQuery function is a part of the Windows API, and there is nothing that hMailServer could do to make it claim that there are no DNS servers configured for the computer. :-\
