Future of Hmailserver

Post by teco » 2019-05-10 15:55

Hi to all,

I have the feeling that Martin was not here in the forum for ages.

Is he still around and what is with the future of Hmailserver. Is this version still alive or is everything in preperation to move to a fork? It looks like that most of the development in the past month has been done by others, but not Martin.

Anybody with more information?

Is it worth to keep staying at Hmail or is moving to a fork a more promising way for the ongoing use?

Thank you.

You are right.
Last sign,of live from Martin was on Github regarding a potential Security issue last Year. The last change he made was July 2018.

Some of us Oldtimers trying to organize a Fork called HCD (HmailServer Community Developers)
with new Features and Fixes for current, problematic Code, but this doesnt mean the existing hMailServer Code is abandoned.

LTS 64-Bit Releases provide hMailServer versions with uptodate OpenSSL and LibreSSL Support and Security fixes.

HCD is our next big thing, focussing on new Features like Linux and Mac Support while the Database Backend stays compatible with hMailServer LTS so Users can change between
both versions.

HCDs main intent is to stay Userfriendly but with new Tricks Users want and OpenSource.

Linux support ? Wooot !

I don't like postfix and co because it's not really user friendly.
This is the one and only reason that prevents me from switching my entire server to linux.

Yes, its true :)

We have forked official hMailServer into a new Project called hMailServer HCD (Hmail Server Community Developer)
repo which works on POSIX (which means Linux, MacOS and standard UNIX-Support)

You can take a sneak peek on our Github page, but right now a heavy rewrite is underway
https://github.com/hMailServer-ComDevs

Important: The HCD Repo contains only the hMailServer.exe main code.
The Client GUI will be organized into a diffrent Project. Right now i think we should do the HCD Client in QT,
so we can run it Crossplatform, but maybe GTK (Gnome Toolkit) or Native OS Windows and UI Elements are
better maintable, but this is a matter of debatte.

PS: Any help from (ideas, improvements, testing, Coding or promoting is is appreciated)

Right now, iam the only coder working on it but i hope if the initial built is out, more and more OpenSource
Enthusiast will follow. HCD is intended as a Democratic Process. What the Majprity of the Community wants and needs,
we will try to archive.

PS2:
HCDs intent is not to split the hMailServer Community apart. We will allways support hMailServer official and Custom builds
to help Users out.

But what will be the future of the hMailServer version for windows?

Who will care about it?

Thats not a Problem.

hMailServer will HCD run on:
Windows 7/8/10 and Server 2008 / 2012/ 2016 / 2019 64-Bit (AMD64)
Linux / with or with X11 (Recent Kernel and Libc required) 64-Bit (AMD64)
MacOS and MacOS-Server 64-Bit (AMD64) 10.10+
UNIX: Solaris 11.4+ and OpenBSD 6.5 on 64-Bit (AMD64)

This goes for the Core Server binaries which can be managed by console comandline tools
and Texteditor like VI, Nano, Pico, Emacs, ect or any hRMS (TLSv1.2 encrypted) Protocol speaking Script or App

For example:
If someone wants to develop a PHP WebAdmin WebApp for HCD he only needs to make sure its LAMP or XAMP
Installation has PHP7+OpenSSL and Sockets support enabled, no COM/DCOM or .NET extensions required.
