Latest hMail 5.2 and Spamassassin

Post by DFitch » 2009-08-02 16:30

Hi Martin,

After upgrading to the latest hMailserver, I have noticed in the logs an error with spamassassin, this never happened in the previous version that I used. (but I upgraded from 5.0b326)

Checking logs for spamd on linux everything shows as it should.

Error: ERROR" 2644 "2009-08-01 21:54:54.453" "Severity: 3 (Medium), Code: HM5157, Source: SpamAssassinClient::OnReadError, Description: There was a communication error with SpamAssassin. hMailServer tried to retrieve data from SpamAssassin but the connection to SpamAssassin was lost. The WinSock error code is 995.

Thanks D

That's because that error was silently ignored before.

Does it happen often?

And why post this in the development section? :)

Okay. Hmm, do you have debug logging enabled? May give a hint on why it occurs. :-\

Also, this could be caused by a timeout. If SpamAssassin thinks for more than 30 seconds, you may get this error. Can you check whether this is the case? (You would need to have debug logging enabled to do this).

I reported this in http://www.hmailserver.com/forum/viewto ... 10&t=14972 I made a change to use a local name server and got SA's scan times down to 3 seconds or less but still get the error message. Some days when log is lite I will get the error only once or twice but most days I get from 6 to 20 and none have taken more than 3 seconds for SA to scan.

I have tried running Spamd as a service and not as a service with no change in the number or error messages in error logs.

Next I was going to try some different command switches for SA but think I will wait and see what Martin has to say on this.

Hi,

I am having a similar problem with my hmailserver.

Here is my platform:

Code: Select all

Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)
Hmailserver 5.3.2-B1769
MySql 5.1.46, for Win64
SpamAssassin version 3.2.3 running on Perl version 5.8.8
ClamAV 0.96.1
Here is a snapshot of my log file:

Code: Select all

"DEBUG"	1936	"2010-07-20 21:48:45.246"	"The client has timed out. Session: 42664"
"DEBUG"	1936	"2010-07-20 21:48:45.246"	"Closing TCP/IP socket"
"ERROR"	2024	"2010-07-20 21:48:45.324"	"Severity: 3 (Medium), Code: HM5157, Source: SpamAssassinClient::OnReadError, Description: There was a communication error with SpamAssassin. hMailServer tried to retrieve data from SpamAssassin but the connection to SpamAssassin was lost. The WinSock error code is 995. Enable debug logging to retrieve more information regarding this problem. The problem could be that SpamAssassin is malfunctioning."
"DEBUG"	2024	"2010-07-20 21:48:45.324"	"The read operation failed. Bytes transferred: 0 Remote IP: , Session: 42664, Code: 995, Message: The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request"
"DEBUG"	2032	"2010-07-20 21:48:45.324"	"Ending session 42664"
"DEBUG"	2032	"2010-07-20 21:48:45.324"	"Spam test: SpamTestSpamAssassin, Score: 0"
It says that the session timed out. Should i be concerned about this?

I read online that SA times out after 30 seconds. Where do I increase the timeout value?

Awaiting your response. Thanks

wabdool,
Probably woulda been best to start your own thread.. Did you try the 'TEST' button in hmail admin where you setup Spamassassin to see if hmail can connect? Your log says 0 bytes transferred so I wonder if hmail can even connect.. Too many possibilities to go into tacking onto someone else's old thread.

Bill,

You're right, I should probably start a new thread for this one.

When i tested SpamAssassin from hmailserver it works now. I looked at the log again and found that SpamAssassin timed out after exactly 30 seconds for that session but it started working again for subsequent sessions.

I wanted to know if there was a way to increase the timeout value for SpamAssassin. I'll google this one, so no worries. Thanks.
