Post by martin » 2008-12-14 20:34

A new 5.0 beta is now available:
http://download.hmailserver.com/hMailSe ... 0-B317.exe

Following changes have been made:
  • Trying to select a user in the IMAP permissions dialog before adding any domains or users resulted in an error message.
  • Forwarding messages using rules sometimes failed.

Log on failures aren't classified as "invalid" commands to hMailServer. What you are looking for is the requested tarpitting feature described here:

Last month one of my accounts was compromised by these attacks. The attacker finally got through and send spam till the server crashed. Afterwards I watch the logs carefully and I have lots of these attacks. 5000 dictonary attacks 3 days ago.

@Martin: Could you give me a hint, when tarpitting is implemented? I am currently thinking of write a script to block these attacks.

Martin: I read your note about "Forwarding messages using rules sometimes failed" with previous versions. With B314, forwarding rules failed if forwarding was enabled with "Keep original message" unchecked. Does the fix in B317 address this issue? In other words, will the additional forwarding rules work now as expected even when "Keep original message" is unchecked?

andyp, I've modified the upcoming build so that invalid SMTP auth attempts are treated as invalid commands. So if a client tries to many, he will be disconnected. This is no final solution though since the spammer can just reconnect and try again. There's no date set for the tarpitting functionality.

Shiloh, yes.

Thank you very much, then I can block these attacks better. I completly agree this is no replacement for tarpitting. Either way I will write a script during Christmas. This script will limit the amount of mails send by an account or a domain and another one will try to blacklist these hacker-clients using onclientconnect event.

On a testserver I tried to migrate the productive server. Worked so far, but during configuration, I encountered a few errors:
  • permissions dialog - > select: I cannot add "anyone" to the permissions list
  • permissions dialog - > select: Select anyone, then group, the combobox and list is still deactivated. After selecting user they become active again.
  • little wish: delivering queue: Is a button clear selected msgs easily possible?
  • larger wish: SSL: Button to create cert and key? This might not be as easy. :(
Hopefully the requests are possible, but my wish to have a final production version is greater...

Will fix the two first.
I'm not sure about what you mean by number 3? The Right click->Remove menu doesn't work, or?
About 4, no, you won't be able to create SSL certifiactes using hMailServer Administrator. This might give users a false impression that creating their own SSL certificates is a good idea.

OK

Nr 3: Forget it, I didn't know there is a right click.
Nr 4: OK, I will use OpenSSL.

You know that to be safe you shouldn't create your own SSL certificate but rather purchase one from a CA, right?
(Specially applies if you have other people accessing your server)

I know, but I have only a few user using SSL. Each cert cost about 70 EUR p.a. and this is too expensive considering the circumstances. I create my own cert and let the users import the cert (without the key) into windows. This way no costs come up and Outlook etc. doesn't report an cert error. Still without the private key getting public, there is no security risk. But thanks for the advice.

At http://www.cacert.org/ you can issue a free certificate.
Only root certificate needs to be imported by clients.
The root certificate can be found at http://www.cacert.org/index.php?id=3

There is also StartSSL http://www.startssl.com/ for free certs.

Some clients already have the root installed, Mozilla I think does, but not Microsoft. Been a while since I looked at this though.
