hMailServer 5.0, build 294 (Alpha)

Post by martin » 2008-07-09 21:20

A new 5.0 alpha is now available:
http://download.hmailserver.com/dev/hMa ... 0-B294.exe

The following changes have been made:

hMailServer Administrator:
  • New About dialog! ;-)
Server core:
  • It's now possible to use rules to move messages to public folders (using syntax #Public.SubFolder, where #Public is the name of your public folder root folder). If a global rule is moved, folder permissions isn't checked. If an account level rule is used, the permissions for the account holder are used to determine whether moving the message is allowed.
  • Microsoft SQL Server Compact has been upgraded to version 3.5.
  • Groups have been moved from the domain level to server-level to make functionality consistent with public folders.
Database changes:
  • Columns hm_messages->messagerecipients, messagerecipientsparsed were dropped since it were not used.
  • Columns hm_messagerecipients->recipientisenabled, recipientislocal and recipientisexisting were dropped since they were redundant.
  • Column hm_aliases->aliastype was dropped since it were not used.
  • Table hm_adsynchronization was dropped since it was not used.
API changes:
  • The Type property of the hMailServer.Alias object has been removed since it was not used.

Upgrade went fine for me, but i havent tested public folders yet.

I use mysql for external DB and its working fine, BUT SQL server compact still gets installed. Is there a way to disable this from installing?

brucestr21, The permissions were redesigned a bit (again) in this build. The database tables were modified so I decided to re-create them rather than trying to migrate old settings. You'll have to live with such when using a alpha build. :) (when upgrading between stable builds, data is preserved where applicable..)

DFitch, I didn't really see that as a problem so that is pretty much 'as designed' (only requires about 2MB so...). However, I've just modified this so in the next build MSSQL CE won't be installed unless it's going to be used.

Martin -
Its no problem, I just wanted to let you know in case it was a bug. I just like testing out the alpha builds and just wanted to pass along my issues :)

Hi Martin,

is that possible to upgrade from hMailserver 4.4.2 B277 with external MySQL-DB to hMailserver 5.0 build 294 without data and config loss?

I upgraded from 273 to 293 less than a week ago. There was no loss of data or configuration during the entire upgrade. The hardest part was doing the actual database upgrade (and that wasn't even that difficult).

I basically just shutdown my hMailServer service, and then installed the new version. i got a database error once the hMailServer started up again. Stopped it and ran the database updater. It updated my database, then i restarted the hMailServer service and was good to go!

It should be but V5 is still in alpha testing and should not be used in production. As usual when upgrading you should take a backup before you do anything.

Anyone running V5 in a production environment that has issues will not receive any support if something goes wrong.
If at first you don't succeed, bomb disposal probably isn't for you! ヅ

This is obvious to me! I just wanted to know whether it is technically possible...

It's been awhile since I've visited here and I was checking in to see what the progress was on V5. I noticed it is still in Alpha. Martin, I hope you didn't quit your day job ;-). j/k

July shouldn't be a problem as I see it. If I'm not done by than, I'll stop working as a developer. ;-) Kaan1983, I expect you to remind me about that. ;)...
I love the progress on V5 though. I'm now testing with this build of V5 to see how it's running. So far so good. Great job Martin, keep up the good work. And you still have 20 days left in July for this to become Beta before having to stop working as a developer. ;-)

I like the move of groups to the server level instead of at the domain level. I definitely think that will help with the confusion of some users.

Actually I did, to be able to spend more time on hMailServer. It's been impossible to give estimates since I've been working a lot on my daytime job. For example, this weekend I was planning to work some on hMailServer but has to work on my daytime job instead. I've left a notice to my employer and will leave that company roughly one month from now.

Also, another reason my estimates suck is because I change the scope all the time when users suggests new things... :)

Hey Martin,

I guess the problem you solved under this topic: http://www.hmailserver.com/forum/viewto ... =7&t=12426 is related to the alpha 294.

I installed the 294 to my developement computer too. It first said there are services using port 25, 110 blah.. and then another error without any message during the installation. At the end hMAdministrator gave the same error with the production server (I can't get COM blah..) Then I uninstalled and reinstalled the alpha. After same errors in the installation now hMAdministrator says Value of 'type' can't be null.

What OS are you installing it on?
What version did you have installed before?

5.0 builds are automatically tested on a couple of different OS'es and with upgrades from earlier builds and I haven't seen your problems in any of those. :-\

It was an upgrade from Alpha 292 to 294 (or from 291 to 294 :) But remember I uninstalled and reinstalled Alpha 294 directly.

Firist one was Windows Server 2003
And the deveopment is on WinXP Pro.

I know it"s weird but doing the same error on both systems is interesting...

Did you use the built in database?

Yes,
MS SQL..

Actually what happened on the server is when I was reinstalling hMS after uninstalled it upgraded the DB from the first V5 alpha to the last.

But on WinXP it didn't do that...

And on XP it says that there's some other service using the ports already and should be stopped. But it anyway installs afterwards.
