You don't need a relayer if you setup your mail server correctly & meet the requirements. You should have static IP, you must not have any port blocking for 25 in OR out by your ISP, you need ports mapped, setup reverse dns, setup SPF, setup dns, etc.

Yes you can use hmail's built-in backup/restore to migrate from one database to another. But built-in backup has limits on how big it can be so do properties on Data folder to see how large it is. You don't have to start over on a new VM you can instead tell hmail to use other database using the db ...
