you could use an IP address rather than a name when you set up the client side SMTP fields in a LAN environment.

Large installations would probably need either a DNS or DHCP server installed. Many modem routers will do both of these jobs fairly well these days for up to about 50 users.

1. perhaps you could investigate IMAP from your current ISP, or leave the meesage on their server, that way both clients can / will download all messages.

Gee, I'll bet that that makes backups lots of fun...having to backup multiple directories etc, and if you gave the individual user file access to that directory, I'd reckon that some users would just delete first and ask second.

get your users to use 'user@domainname.com' as their login, rather than just 'user'.

sounds like a thunderbird issue, perhaps even a bad install of thunderbird. Have you tried reinstalling the latest stable Thunderbird release? Have you checked with Thunderbird support.

hmailserver uses a non-standard port by default.
You can install MYSQL standard as well.

They will happily co-exist on the same machine with no fiddling required.

These logs would be a start.

Isn't that handled by the clients?

I send signed and encrypted e-mail regularly through my hmailserver, but the client (ie Outlook or a specialised Healthcare e-mail client) does the encryption and handles the signing.
