Just to fill you in, I have never noticed this problem before but just today changed the external pop account that emails were being downloaded from and there were a couple of hundred waiting to be downloaded. Half of these appear to have been delivered OK.

I guess its a question for a more senior user than me then but I am interested in the answer because I do find in quite slow and get timeouts intermittently with 3.0.

PHPMyAdmin gets 1000 headers much faster than through squirrelmail+hmailserver.

Are you sorting any of the columns?

hMailServer 3.x doesn't have server-side sorting (I don't know about 4.0) so if you sort any of the columns it has to pull all 4k messages from hmail then sort them in PHP.

The mysql data directory is only 25Mb so I guess the answer is no although there are about 13000 line in the messages table.

I am going to do some more research as it looks like it may be a known problem and may be solved by an upgrade: http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=563

I now realise that the speed issue is due to sqmail using its own sort algorithm rather than an IMAP server-side sort - I must have been tireder than I thought last night.

solved!

It was just the php based webmailers using gethostbyname excessively. Squirrelmail uses it if any of the columns are sorted. It takes about 2 seconds to view the first 100 messages of the 5000 with no column sort selected.

Now to get some much needed sleep! :D
