You also might want to check the setting in the SM profile for that user. I have had the problem of a user not being able to send mail to external servers; turns out they had the wrong e-mail address specified in their profile.

In hMailserver 4 (which is not yet released as stable) this should not be a problem since you can write your own VBA-scripts in 4.0.

I've been using hMailServer 3.4b76 for about 6 months and am very happy with it. Well done!! My users have the ability to submit helpdesk tickets via e-mail.
