If web services are introduced, I think they should be in addition to the COM interface .... actually there's nothing really stopping one of us from writing a web service which simply calls the COM API -- obviously such would be a little less efficient, and retaining COM won't help any possible targ...

You'll have to tell us more than that - there's nothing unusual in that log snippet.

Have you tried logging in (over POP3 or IMAP) as webmaster@dolphin.getmyip.com ?
Have you checked that the menioned filename exists on disk?

What makes you think you can't receive emails?

I use RDP for all local servers (& some local PCs) aswell as all remote servers -- it's just a nice way of managing things,a nd I can leave things running and have concurrent sessions.

I use RDP -- I really don't see the point in using 3rd party stuff when Windows already has all the functionality required.

I use custom port numbers and for my Windows 2003 R2 boxes I have the secure connection settings enabled etc.

The RFCs don't really account for spam.

Some of the big companies we deal with in work don't have coresponding A & PTR records.

PTR's map 1 IP to 1 name
A's map names to IPs
with name-based hosting we can't make them always match as a pair

I've seen outlook sparodicly give that "error" message accross multiple configurations -- it just seems to happen sometimes - I even get it maybe once a week on this server which runs both hMail 4.3 B242 & Outlook 2003 SP2 on Win2003 R2 Std

I am thinking of the case if you are using virtual domains sharing a single IP address where some domains you would like to enable antivirus scanning while excluding it on others. Your interpretting IP Ranges backwards - IP Ranges apply to where the email is coming from - not the email addresses on...

The spam filtering and virus checking are invoked when a mesage is delivered to the server over SMTP .... there is no need to check again when you collect over POP3 or IMAP to view the emails.

Use a proper email class in PHP - the built-in mail() function doesn't really suit any serious usage.

Try PhpMailer - http://phpmailer.sourceforge.net/ ... this is a much better way to send email from PHP and will allow your script to send with authentication.

There is a function called Login() in background_login.php ... on my live server this starts on line 49 (but I've modified some code so your's may start on a different line) ... it would be easy to set the domain to the HTTP_HOST in that function.

I've never touched COM in .NET, and I don't really use ASP.NET .... whilst I've got experience with Windows app dev in C#, I almost exclusively use PHP these days ... so if you want a PHP script it would take a couple of minutes, but for ASP.NET I'd be a little lost so start with!!

A lot of people only do a full anti-spam config on their mainmailserver, thus hitting the backup routes offers an easy way in ... just lock it down in the same way as main mail server etc.

My home connection in the UK is 7MBit downstream, 380KBit upstream for £35 a month. My main web/mail server is also in the UK, but it's on a 100MBit full duplex connection in a datacentre and 2 terrabytes a month of bandwidth costs £45 ... I intend to have a cluster in that datacentre within a year ...

The XML processing overhead of web services will dent the perfomance ... but they are a very flexible and interoperable choice .... I think that for hMail -> hMail communication an optimised binary protocol would be prefered ..... though XML web services would be easier for multi-site synchronisatio...

This seems do-able for the outbound sending of emails, but the server-wide helo would remain for inbound communication.
All hostnames used would need DNS entries ... maybe you'd have to use seperate outbound IPs to fulfil the issues DooM highlights?

Native support for clustering would be great, I think it needs to have the option to use a shared file space, and a 2nd option to maintain files on each server, mail should be copied to the other's shortly after delivery - should a message be requested which isn't yet copied over, then it is copied ...

um, the discussion of SPF in this thread is back to front -- SPF (in terms of the records for such for YOUR domains) stops people from pretending to be you! - it does not stop incoming spam (expect for the odd fake email here and there) SPF is simple to configure and there are no excuses for not set...

Actually, the GUIDs used by hMail are not based on the mac address, which was only used in V1 GUIDs ... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globally_Unique_Identifier (All my hMail emails have a 4 not a 1 -- see the "Algorithm" section of that page)
