:(

This happens on evey account I make using hMailserver version 4.3.1-B253

I have tried everything and still unable to recieve email via mail.bqwik.com using hailserver. I have turned off authentication for SMTP still nothing. I went to DnsStuff and got this error:

ERROR: One or more of your mailservers does not accept mail to [email protected]. Mailservers are required (RFC822 6.3, RFC1123 5.2.7, and RFC2821 4.5.1) to accept mail to postmaster.

mail.bqwik.com's postmaster response:
>>> RCPT TO:<[email protected]>
<<< 530 SMTP authentication is required.

I just don't understand this it is as if I have not turned off SMTP authentication yet I know I have.

I have another email server running exchange 2003 and it has no SMTP problems using the same ISP network connection. Port 25 is open.

Can anyone help please.

Have you spelt your domain name correctly?
Have you setup the postmaster account?
Is this a main or a backup server?

How have you done that? Looks to me like you haven't done it the right way since it's apparently still turned on. :)

I just run DNSReport and it now reported All of your mailservers accept mail to [email protected]. So I guess you solved it yourself..

I have installed the latest build of hMailServer and cannot get email to go in or out to external addresses. I can only send email to myself.

ports all check out. I am running hMailServer on another machine and it works fine. I have compared all settings and I am at a loss. I have SMTP authorization on, but I am supplying the correct credentials.

Here is a short log...

pblanton, please never re-use existing threads for unrelated problems. It will just cause confusion and annoy people.

You need to enable SMTP authentication in your email client when sending your message. Your client is trying to deliver the message without using SMTP authentication. If you think you have enabled SMTP authentication in your email client already, you need to read the documentation for your client and see what you have missed.

I am having the same problem as the user who started the thread, therefore this thread is the logical place for my query.

I am properly sending the smtp credentials. I have tried it with both thunderbird and outlook express. The credentials are the same ones I am using to check mail with and they work fine for that.

There is another problem unrelated to my credentials.

I'd appreciate it if you'd not reply and waste my time if you don't know the answer and just want to berate me for some imagined transgression of forum etiquette.

I posted my settings, you are correct Martin it checks out ok when you run a DNSReport.

The problem I'm having now is I can't send and recieve emails yet the DNSReport says its fine.

I posted my hMailserver setting so you could see if I missed anything there or made a mistake. I don't know what else to do now.

Thank you

Then what happens when you try to send an email?

Have you read the troubleshooting guides on this topic?

I get a 530 error.

Yes, I ahve been through both documents and verified that all of those issues are as described.

pblanton, I wasn't asking you, I was asking tekweb. This is the reason different peoples problems should be discussed in different threads. It's not a matter of, as you call it, "imagined transgression of forum etiquette", it's a matter of being able to solve problem efficiently. If many people talk at the same time, the discussion will get confused. This just proved it. I wouldn't ask you what error you got, since I already knew it. Yet you replied to my question.

Martin,

He and I are having the same problem. I guess I could start another thread, but then I am positive someone would complain that there is already a thread on that topic. :?

This post was completely pointless. If you start a new thread for your own issues you may have someone point you to another thread but no one would "complain" about having an additional thread. If necessary they can be merged at a later date and arguing semantics really doesn't get your problem fixed any quicker does it?

The fact that your problem symptoms are the same doesn't mean you have the same problem. As a developer, I'm sure you know that different problems can result in the same symptom. When troubleshooting, assuming nothing is a good thing and no-one will complain if you do that. It could very well be that you're having the same problem, but assuming it is still wrong. Anyway, since this thread is alerady all messy, I guess we can just as well continue here.

The log you posted shows the following:

Quote:
SMTPD" 6060 29 "2007-03-13 10:16:50.426" "67.41.76.33" "SENT: 220 ServerName.com Email Server"

"SMTPD" 6060 29 "2007-03-13 10:16:50.598" "67.41.76.33" "SENT: 530 SMTP authentication is required."

The problem is that your server tries to send an email without sending login credentials. After your client sent EHLO CT3916, and before it sent MAIL FROM, it should start a login procedure by sending an AUTH command - but it doesn't. If you have entered login credentials in your email client, it could be that something makes your client think that the server does not support authentication.

I'm not sure whether you entered the welcome message "ServerName.com Email Server" in your config, or whether it's something you just replaced before posting the log here. If you actually entered that welcome message in the SMTP config, you need to update it. Try adding the word ESMTP in front of the string, so it says "ESMTP ServerName.com Email Server" instead. The lack of the word ESMTP may make your client assume that hMailServer does not support authentication.

Mr. Doom. Thank you so much for your non-pointless helpful message. I'm sure once I try it, it will certainly solve my problem with hMailServer.

Yadayada.., stop caring about things you consider to be pointless and focus on the problem you want to solve instead. Start of by reading my previous response to you, 10 centimeters up on your screen from this text.

I did that. I changed the line to read...

"ESMTP TankBonesteel.com Email Server"

I then tried to set up the email account in Outlook 2007 and I get this error on testing the settings...

"Send test e-mail message: None of the authentication methods supported by this client are supported by your server."

Lemme go get the new log... Ok the log of the Outlook test is...

I am having a great deal of trouble getting hMailServer st up on a new machine. After metaphoricaly poking at it with a pointy stick, I have found that on the "ipRanges" settings page, Under "Require Authentication For Deliveries", in the "Internet" range (127.0.0.1 - 127.0.0.1)...

If I set "To Remote Accounts" true, then all attempts to authenticate with Thunderbird, Outlook Express and Outlook 2007, fail. Username and passwords are good, because I can check mail with them, but I get a

"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was '[email protected]'. Subject 'test', Account: 'mail.tankbonesteel.com', Server: 'mail.tankbonesteel.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 SMTP authentication is required.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC79"

If I de-select that, then I can send and receive email, but open relay tests fail when the test impersonates a user on the system.

I really want to require authentication in order to send to remote accounts, but it is causing me great pain.

I am strarting a new thread with this, more isolated issue.

Tekweb,

Try disabling "Require Authentication For Deliveries" - "To Remote Accounts" and see if you can't send email to outside users. I'll bet you can.

Not that it will "solve" the problem, but I bet you have the same issue I do.

Hi Tekweb, I would suggest you follow what martin wrote in his last post to you. I've quoted what martin has said below.

:o email sends out ok, sends to hmailserver account do not arrive

Raymond I checked out the links Martin suggested I did the tests and all checks out good port 25 is open.

This is the error that comes back after sending to hmailserver account:
Recipient: <[email protected]>
Reason: SMTP authentication is required.

I have checked all authentication settings in hmailserver they are all "off" yet I still get this error when sending to hmailserver account.

I can send out to external account no problem.

Thank you pblanton I tried that still no luck

Help I still in the dark.

If you haven't yet, can you try changing your IP ranges back to the installation defaults?

No, you don't need to set anything else up. What Greylisting does is that it delays emails that are coming into your mail server. The usual hMailserver setting is to delay the attempts for 30 minutes. You can adjust it to 5 minutes if you find that delay too long. I find that setting it to 5 minutes works quite well.
http://www.hmailserver.com/documentatio ... reylisting

Most spammers use bots to send their messages and these bots generally don't attempt to resend after they have been delayed. Normal mail servers do retry after certain intervals.

If you haven't yet read the phpwebadmin installation documentation...

I would suggest you read this documentation before stepping into the unknown... :)
http://www.hmailserver.com/documentatio ... reylisting

You actually need to add the IP address of the sender's mail server and not the email address to the whitelist.

If you need to know how a feature in hMailserver works, have a look at this link.
http://www.hmailserver.com/documentation/?page=overview

This link talks about the catch-all account.

The catch-all address I'm referring to is the one that resides in Domains under the General TAB. It asks for Domain Name then just below it it asks for Catch-all address. In the help documentation it talks about adding a catch-all email address but not anything I could see on this particular Catch-all address.

Could someone please tell me how this particular Catch-all address is utilized/

Thank you. :?

It is possible to specify an email address that receives all emails being sent to non-existent addresses on your domain. For example, you may have [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected] as existing accounts. But there's a risk that someone might misspell an email address, writing [email protected] instead of [email protected].

The solution is to specify an account - either a previously existing one, or one created for the purpose - to be the catch-all account. All email sent to non-existent addresses on the domain will then be delivered to the catch-all account.

What part of this was unclear? :)

Hi Martin,

hMailserver is great thank you for your efforts, you did some great work on this and I'm currently testing it. It is proves as good as it currently does I'm going to get rid of Exchange 2003

The explanation you gave is clear and nmakes sense. However, Under the Domain "General TAB" it allows you to put the address [email protected] as the catchall address. So, that being set what happens to these incorrectly addresed email once they go into that email account [email protected] I didn't see a forward tab so I could see what is comnig into that accoiunt account.

Thank you.

Not sure what you mean now. Either you configure your email client to download messages from this account as well. Or you specify [email protected] as catch-all address, and all messages sent to invalid addresses will be forwarded to you.

Nartin,

Sorry for the confusion I'll have to think how to word this so it is plain and doesn't waste your time. I'll be back soon.

Hehe, you're not wasting my time. But it's probably more efficient for yourself if you read the documentation and then test the functionality. It won't hurt you. :)

Not sure if this was ever resolved, but I ran into this issue as well. The documentation does cover it, but it does seem a bit confusing, especially if you have a bit more complicated setup.

At first I wasn't using an SMTP relay and with that setup I really didn't need to make any changes other than domain, host, etc.

However, if I switch to using the SMTP relay to my ISP's host (so outgoing email doesn't end up in a Junk Mail folder due to dynamic IP) it gets a bit confusing. My ISP doesn't require authentication for their SMTP server. With this in mind, you wouldn't think anything else would need to be set, but you would be wrong.

hMailServer is set by default to require SMTP authentication on the External to External Internet IP range. With that set, you do need to set your email client (Outlook, etc.) to require authentication. The username and password you select in your email client will be the one you used in hMailServer account, not the one for your ISP (since it doesn't require it).

An alternative would be to disable the authentication on the External to External for the Internet IP range, but I would suggest that you do not for security reasons.

My problem was in setting the wrong username and password for authentication (I was trying my ISP account instead of my hMailServer account). I simply didn't think I needed to authenticate on my hMailServer since I didn't have authentication set in my SMTP settings there and my ISP's SMTP doesn't require it. I totally overlooked the IP Range settings since my previous setup worked without it.

The reason for this is because the previous setup would see an outgoing email as Internal to External. Using an SMTP Relay, that same email becomes an External to External since it has to route it through the relay.

I hope this helps understand this a bit more. It took me a bit of testing and scratching my head to figure it out. :)

having same issues regarding 530.

what i note, is that i have two names (eg. mail.domain.net & mail.domain2.com) -- as aliases under the "NAMES" tab for my primary domain (eg. MyDOMAIN.NET").

when i send to mail.domain.net -- all is okay.

when i send to the second, mail.domain2.com -- it fails with the 530

(as a footnote, in order to manage multiple domains so that the spf records match w/authentication, it would require the local.host setting to be soft and set on an account-level basis (at a minimum) versus a machine-level basis.)
