Getting 530 error even though client is set to authenticate

Post by gweeks » 2008-01-23 18:01

In hmail I set up an account with the following settings:
Account address: test@xxxxxx.com
Password: test
------------------------------------
My other hmail settings are:
Internet IP Range: 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255
Allow connections: SMTP, POP3, IMAP all checked
Require authentication for deliveries: To local accounts unchecked
To remote accounts checked
Allow deliveries from:
Local to local checked
Local to external checked
External to local checked
External to external unchecked
------------------------------------
In outlook I have the following settings:
Servers:
Incoming (POP3): mail.xxxxxx.com
Outgoing (SMTP): mail.xxxxxx.com

Incoming mail server:
Account name: test@xxxxxx.com
Password: test

Outgoing mail server:
My server requires authentication is checked
Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected
------------------------------------
My problem is that I get a 530 SMTP authentication is required when I try to send from test@xxxxxx.com to any external address. When I uncheck "Require authentication for deliveries: To remote accounts" in hmail the email goes through instantly, but obviously I want to leave this checked. Why is hmail sending the 530 when I have Outlook configured to authenticate for outgoing messages? I have triple checked all of my settings. Log from hmail below. Any help greatly appreciated.

That client is not authenticating according to the log. What client are you using?

I am using Outlook 2000. I have other email accounts in this copy of Outlook that are authenticating with other servers and they are set up the same way.

Here are the settings. These work to retrieve mail

And after I click settings... for outgoing mail server

I also tried with Thunderbird with these settings and had the same result.

Is it ok that incoming and outgoing mail servers are both named the same (mail.xxxxxx.com)?

As long as it points to your server it doesn't matter what it is called :)

Do you have a firewall, AV, Spam filtering software that could be in the way? If you have, temporarily disable them and any scripts you may have running and try again.

You have a firewall / router which replaces EHLO with XXXX in the log. I've seen that a couple of times before.

Have you entered a SMTP relayer in your SMTP settings?

Are you using your ISP SMTP server as relay? Some ISP's require authentication so not to be open relays.

I have entered the same host in SMTP relayer as Host Name. Is it correct?
