Very strange! that build should not have the changes in place.. They were only for a custom build I did but suppose possible I messed up doing the posted build.. OOPS! I guess I'll need to test it or post another build.. Since it was a custom build the values are hard-coded & there are no INI settings. I guess confirm the version # shown in hmail admin matches the download you think you got. If it matches then you'll need to use an older build until I can post another one sorry.

mns17,
Looks like there is some encoding issue. I will see if I can duplicate the problem here using copy/paste (since I can't type foreign letters) otherwise not sure how else to proceed. Btw what database are you using & what charset in the hmail tables?

FYI: if this is hmail 5.4 issue & not specific to my experimental builds it'd be best if you created your own thread. Speaking of 5.4, are you 100% sure the issue didn't exist in 5.3.x?
Thx

Hi, Bill

This is hmail 5.4 issue & specific to your experimental builds 5.4-B2012052801.
I 100% sure the issue didn't exist in 5.3.x.

DataBase is MSSQL.

Charset of table is Cyrillic_General_CI_AS.

Thx

Hey Anton,
I can't imagine anything has been changed in the experimental builds to believe it's experimental only. Are you sure you tested with official 5.4 builds? Interesting if it didn't happen with 5.3.x though.

I'd have check but I thought the recommended charset was UTF8.

Possible the wrong charset of the database is to blame & not hmail version? Do you have a way to setup test server of each version & test?
Thx

Anton,
Interesting.. Did you happen to test with mysql? The creation scripts for mysql say: "DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8;" but the mssql one does not specify a charset..

I've tested:

DB - MSSQL
hMailServer 5.3.3 - Build 1879 - It's OK
hMailServer 5.4 - 1944 - It's encoding issue
hMailServer 5.4 - 1942 - It's encoding issue
hMailServer 5.4-B2012052801 - It's encoding issue

On MySQL i tested later.

OK so you've confirmed this is NOT an issue specific to my experimental builds & happens with official 5.4 too. 1942 & 1944 are official beta releases NOT experimental. So ideally you'd make a new thread for this issue & link to your 1st post here to help this thread from getting too messy.
mns17 wrote:In MSSQL not present charset UTF8 (((
OK thanks. Sorry I don't deal with MSSQL much but if you could test MYSQL & UTF8 (the default hmail uses) then it'll eliminate possibility that it's a database encoding issue.

I'm not sure why martin would have changed anything between 5.3.x & 5.4 in terms of the IMAP folder or database encoding but obviously there is some translation issue going on. It might require him to look at it but like I said if I can duplicate it here with copy/paste (since I can't type them) then maybe I can find the cause & fix it. Obviously I need help from you since you found the issue & speak/write the language & I don't. :)

So yeah please create a new thread & link back to your 1st post on the problem here so this thread can be experimental-specific problems/questions.
Thx

After update hmailserver from prior BUILD to BUILD - 5.4-B2012093001 in my server some random mails in queue (I think large mails) indicate next try to: today date an 19:00:00 hour.
I downgrade to BUILD - 5.4-B2012052801 and the problem disappears.
Thanks to all

Thanks for the info redbarcelona. Yeah it seems experimental feature I added in custom build made it into the one I posted on accident. I'll get a new build up soon.

Posted special build for people dealing with the Microsoft Sharepoint hard-coded workflow@noreply issue. No need for this build besides that. Odds are I'll add INI setting to handle this in future but for now it's hard-coded in this special build to not require a domain suffix. This could be useful for people running a local server who want to use @localhost as well. For everyone else stick with official builds or earlier experimental.

Posted special build for people getting abused by spammers setting SPF +all

2013-01-25
*** SPECIAL BUILD - DO NOT USE UNLESS NEEDED ***
* Mod'd hmail regex to allow domains without suffixes such as localhost or workflow@noreply for MS Sharepoint services
* 1MB delayed email special build patch removed
* Block SPF +ALL special build patch removed

2012-10-2
*** SPECIAL BUILD - DO NOT USE UNLESS NEEDED ***
* Hard-coded hmail to reject all email from domain with SPF +all
* Delay emails over 1MB until after 9PM

Hi

Latest build from download page is:
Version 5.4 - Build 1946 (2013-02-09)

1)
Will there be a build based on this?
2)
Will it be possible just to install Version 5.4 - Build 1946 (2013-02-09) on top of the "EXPERIMENTAL BUILD"?
3)
When will all this Beat build be finish and as old time be a real official build?

1) martin has been releasing a lot of betas lately so it's tough to keep up with releasing a matching experimental. Honestly since his recent builds are not changes I need I'm not in a hurry to do it anyway. It it up to you as the user to decide which is best for your needs & not worry so much on which build mine are based on. ;) Look at the change logs & see if you need the changes of either.

2) Yes you should always be able to install an official over one of my experimental releases especially if there are no database changes. The other way around might not be the case if db changes happen but I'll include instructions if that is the case. I try to make the experimentals be drop-in ready & backward compatible unless noted.

3) martin has been working hard on catching up on issue tracker bugs lately in preparation for an official 5.4 release and I've committed most of my local changes to the official code for his review so I suspect it'll be soon. Hopefully.

Just install the latest experimental (20130306) and all is well. It resolves the issue I was having with RDNS_NONE in SpamAssasin.

Is there anyway to tell when this particular fix (dated 2012-02-16) by rolaids0 will make it into a 5.4 beta release?

OK cool glad to hear. The change was recently added to the official source code as martin & I have been working towards finally getting a release out finally so I'd assume it'll be in the next official release, even if it's another beta, as I see no reason for martin to reject the changes.

Hi Bill,
is it possible, that there is a delay for mails bigger than 1 MB until 7pm in the build 5.4-B2013030601?
Take a look at the screenshot, I've sended two mails bigger than 1 MB and they are in the queue until 2013-03-18 19:00:00.
Thanks

Hey Kriztan. Bah you're right I see it now. I thought I had disabled all areas but clearly I missed one sorry about that. I should just get the ini settings in & be done with it rather than manually hard-disabling the code like I had been. Thanks for pointing that out I'll get an update posted.

New build posted which should really have the emails over 1MB delayed until 7pm changes actually removed. lol

Also made a few changes to test theories on potential causes of IOCP errors including disabling statistics reporting every 1000 messages (if it was enabled anyway but now forced disabled in this test build so no stats are uploaded no matter the setting) as well as added an additional test & logging for iEvent value which should never get triggered but if it does could give us some important info.

NEW BUILD POSTED

2013-05-13 5.4-B2013051301
* Upgraded to SA protocol 1.2 to allow size to be passed to/from SA for better confirming SA results (Thanks rolaids0/JamesDR for the patch!)
* IMPORTANT NOTE: If SA is desired, SA 2.70 or later will be required going forward. Since that's from 2004 seems unlikely anyone is on THAT old of a build.
* Disabled test logging for future multi-forwarding

NEW BUILD POSTED

2013-05-23 5.4-B2013052301
* Updated to B1949+ base
* Mod'd hmail regex to allow domains without suffixes such as localhost or workflow@noreply for MS Sharepoint services

This is special build to update an old special build that removed the hard-coded restriction in hmail that required a domain suffix. Unless you need that feature there isn't much reason to use this and it has not been decided if this will remain for future experimental builds or ever make it into official builds.

Bill,

Running 5.4-B2013041501. I do not know if this is a base code issue or an experimental build issue. I have SMTP running on ports 25, 587, and 465. The log file reflects only port 25 interactions. There are no port 587 or 465 interaction lines.

In my case, port 25 is not accessible from the internet, but is fed by a spam scanner and outgoing feeds a spooler.

Authenticated clients submit via port 587 or 465. There are no logs of client authentication or message submission.

Odd.. Nothing has been changed in the logging or listening ports that'd explain that.. Did you try installing B1949 or earlier beta like B1942 to see if you were seeing the same thing? I'd sooner say you're not reading the logs or understanding the setup correctly because what you describe doesn't really make much sense.

btw it'd be best if ou started a new thread & provided some more info like screenshot of your ports config & log snippets.
Thx

Hey Bill,

got a more general question: I see you change a lot of code, you make some special changes, some very helpful changes and some critical changes. But which of these change will be merged into the RC? Are your changes all reviewed by Martin, change by change?

My questions is aimed at the fact, that I see a lot of movement from your person and nearly no movement from other persons. And if neither changes you make nor changes other persons make reach the RC nor the RC status turns into stable, why should somebody choose the master branch of hmailserver and not your branch? I guess you're doing tests also, don't you? Didn't it generally make more sense to pass your code to the automated tests of martin?

Greg
Hey Greg,
Well my builds are essentially an unofficial branch I self-maintain. I see no reason for a true branch as I'd like to keep mine as close to the official as possible. Generally I commit almost all changes I make in mine into the official source but yeah not all. For one martin is more strict on sticking to RFC's than I am. I agree RFC's are very important but IMO there are times the RFC's are outdated or lack common sense factor so there are times I find it necessary & prudent to sway from the RFC's where martin would prefer to be 100% RFC 100% of the time. He's a bit of a stickler on that. So my philosophy is to commit to the official code if it's in the best interest of as many people as possible and almost always try to make the changes default to the original methods so that someone must CHOOSE to use my changes by setting an INI value. It seems to be the least obtrusive way of handling it & so far for the past 2+ years it's worked out well & martin's only rolled back a couple of my changes @ tweaked a few others. But generally we have the understanding that I'm not out to change hmail, just help improve it and he has final say in it as it's his project I'm just helping out.

In terms of differences yes there will be some differences in my experimentals from official releases partly just because of timing of releases. Often I add something that takes awhile to get into the official source & then awhile before martin posts an official build so it could be months between them. There are times martin makes changes in official code & it takes me awhile to merge them with mine so there can be weeks before they're in my builds. I don't see that as a flaw I see it as a plus because it gives people the option to choose what fits their needs. I don't figure very many people will use my experimental builds unless they have a specific need like a 'hotfix' bug that was patched while waiting for an official release. (Often I post builds for people to test critical fixes the same day or within days of an urgent bug where it could take months before it'd be in an official release. So I hope I fill a need in doing so.) Or one my experimental features I'm toying with that sounds interesting to someone. Personally I only tun my own builds on different live production servers & have never run an official release other than testing. Not because I think there is something wrong with official releases but I might as well use my own builds & enjoy some of the changes I've done that might never make it into official releases. Plus it gives me an idea if the builds are truly stable in real life.

As far as testing my builds don't get tested much beyond 'do they build without errors' except when I'm working on a particular feature then I do various scenarios manually but they are more or less sanity checks to make sure things seem OK and what I've changed acts how I expect. Official releases on the other hand go thru a crapload of automated regression testing. Sometimes I swear martin spends more time coding tests than the actual code. lol But it's good his automated tests have caught bugs but they've missed some too. It's a handy tool I've just not bothered setting it up here to run myself. Everything is there for me to run his tests I just need to get the time & inclination to do it. Btw martin's regression tests can detect when my changes muck something up in the default state but to my knowledge he's not reconfigured them to test my changes in the alternate state. IOW I am pretty she he doesn't change each INI I've created & run tests for every scenario. He's more concerned with if hmail will work OK 'out of the box' for people and anyone who uses one of the settings I've added is doing so at their own risk. At some point many of my changes will eventually get added to the GUI & database settings then that'll be a different story sa the tests will then include the scenarios but at this point any features enabled that I've done should be assume are untested beyond the fact I use most of them on my live servers as do some other people who want those features.

Anyway a bit long-winded but hopefully that answers your questions.

Thanx for the widespread answer.

I hope your will motivate yourself in future to set up the regression test. It would really be a big advantage. Particularly for all people needing a hot fix from you.

That's also my concern regarding your experimental build. But I assume and hope all your introduced INI settings and changes are defaulted to the oob behaviour of hmailserver. For this reason you should be able to pass all regression tests. In that case people should be easily able to selectively switch on and off some changes they need with the security of a formerly passed regression test.

To speak clearly, I need a change you made regarding the build in backup. I'm not willing to perform a manual migration from mssqlce to postgres, so I need the capability to backup AND restore the entire database and settings with the build in backup without messages. As far as I can remember, that's not possible with the official build. But the change you made has had a lapse although... aaaah long time ago... I try to find the original post.

I just don't have time to fight with regression tests. If people want code that's regression tested they can wait for official releases. If they are in dire need of a fix or want cutting edge it's their choice. I run my own experimentals live as do many others but it's by choice.

Yes almost every change I make that is controlled by ini defaults to "original" method so should pass regression tests by default since my changes don't even get run unless person chooses to enable. unless regression tests are made to test the code with each option enabled the changes are not likely tested at all. There are circumstances where the original default behavior is not ideal so I adjust default but those are always noted in the commit change logs to source & in my experimental change logs. Generally I leave default to be original unless there is big enough reason not to.

I believe the db-only stuff was added to the original source I'd have to look. In either case like I said above unless regression tests were added to test the code with enabled then the changes are essentially untested beyond people who have tried it.

Built in backup now works up to 15 GB in ver 5.4

How big is your backup likely to be (including messages)?

ALSO, you can de-select messages when you backup. Have been able to do that for as long as I remember (> 6 years)
Have you trialled to do this yet?
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

He's meaning to not backup messages at all but increasing to 15GB does help for some but a big waste of time when just switching databases.

Unchecking messages does not backup the messages db info so it's about worthless unless someone is starting over fresh & just wants their config & no messages.

THX Bill, that's exact my backup problem. But what was the problem with the code you introduced?

Assuming you wouldn't change any defaults (you wrote you did sometimes), your experimental switches hasn't to be tested during regression tests. Better: they mustn't be tested as long they are meant to stay experimental. Many other open source projects work this way: Even in stable releases experimental switches do exist. Why they do this? To prevent a situation like the situation right now. You have a completely parallel code project with the need to be merged in both ways and by hand. Horrible work to do, just my opinion. But not only work to do. I has also a big disadvantage for all people needing a change.

Changing your modus operandi to "never change a default behaviour" would give Martin the opportunity to commit even experimental changes into a stable release. Compared to Microsofts "Hot fixes": They aren't applied by Windows update also. You have to "switch them on" by manually installing a single fix, not changing the remaining OS.

By the way: THX for your work and dedication. I do really appreciate it!

Think you're misunderstanding what I mean. The reason I do it the way I do is because martin is not always available to discuss things with. So I make changes to my local copy & release experimentals. Those experimentals might have things in them that will never make it into official releases or they might have some rough version that makes it but in a different form. But sometimes they are test bug fixes that get re-written etc. Either way there is no way I want to do commits for every change I make as the official source would be a mess. Instead I can do whatever I want with my local copy without worries of introducing issues into the main source. Or at least no more often than needed. Don't get me wrong I understand what you're saying but at this point the way it's being done works. I think the biggest reason it's worked is because development is so slow on both sides so there isn't really every much issue with merging since it's entire files 99% of the time. Rarely have we had to manually merge individual files.

Anyway my builds are meant for urgent bug fixes and for people to play with potential features that may or may not ever make it into official code without making a mess of the official code and minimizing risks of causing issues in the official code.

your welcome.
btw could somebody please change the links on the website? There's no link on the right hand side pointing to the now stable (oioioioioioioihhh!) 5.4. It's furthermore shown as beta.

Thx i'll mention it to martin. He was doing a controlled release of 5.4 so maybe he intentionally held off on changing the site along with holding off an making an announcement to the site, forum or mailing list.

Seems to be a simple fault. In the middle of the page 5.4 is listed among production releases.

Thanks :)
I've been terribly busy with life & MIA from the forums but readily available via IRC or PM's for urgent stuff. The good news is it seems 5.4 release has been pretty stable overall as I've not heard alarms going off. lol

Yesterday's experimental build added greylock's Indexing fix & today's adds changes greylock made that might end IOCP crashes/hangs for good! Assuming these work we all owe greylock a beer or sparkling water or whatever he fancies :)

PLEASE test & report back! The 8Nov build includes the indexing patch but for testing purposes it could be handy to have both available.
Thanks!
Bill

Thanks for the patches , but the links are from external websites and not from hmailserver. Is this patch provided by hmailserver or is it a 3rd party solution. Please let me know so that i can apply the patch and test . I am struggling with this hmail iocp exception from long time.

The patches are unofficial & not hosted on hmailserver.com
