Throwing a tennis ball covered in dirt through the air doesnt class the dirt as airbourne.
But wearing a mask will keep your face from getting dirty if you get hit with the ball.
Not if it hits you in the eye. And tennis balls do not fit through 5mm gaps around face masks. Droplets do.

150. Roughly around the time that sanitary practices were universalized and adopted by the medical community.

Incidentally, the local middle school is named after jonas salk. I don't think he lived around here and I don't see Amy connection to the man. Perhaps he cured someone in charge of building the school of polio.

My mask doesn't have gaps. I know how to make things.

Anyway, by your logic we should just all lay down and die because perfection is the enemy of good?

No not at all. Stay in, and if you don't stay in, keep your distance from others and wash your hands as soon as you can (before touching your face). That will do you.

Be constructive, fill your time. Do a hobby to stave off boredom, and if sewing is your thing, then sewing a mask won't be a waste of time after all.

There you go. For masks to stand a chance of being effective in preventing and receiving the pathogens already in the air it needs to be a certified n95 type - I'm not sure an aldi bag and tissue paper conforms. And even they have limited efficacy on preventing transmission especially when sent as a sneeze or cough.
Turbulent gas cloud dynamics should influence the design and recommended use of surgical and other masks. These masks can be used both for source control (ie, reducing spread from an infected person) and for protection of the wearer (ie, preventing spread to an unaffected person). The protective efficacy of N95 masks depends on their ability to filter incoming air from aerosolized droplet nuclei. However, these masks are only designed for a certain range of environmental and local conditions and a limited duration of usage. Mask efficacy as source control depends on the ability of the mask to trap or alter the high-momentum gas cloud emission with its pathogenic payload. Peak exhalation speeds can reach up to 33 to 100 feet per second (10-30 m/s), creating a cloud that can span approximately 23 to 27 feet (7-8 m). Protective and source control masks...should have the ability to repeatedly withstand the kind of high-momentum multiphase turbulent gas cloud that may be ejected during a sneeze or a cough and the exposure from them. Currently used surgical and N95 masks are not tested for these potential characteristics of respiratory emissions.
Ultimately designed to prevent transmission by exhalation (source control). No evidence that they work with a sneeze... just hope.

WE ARE ALL DOOMED!!

The absence of testing =/= absence of reality. Electricity existed before it was tested. Every prototype in the world existed before it was tested.

We're doomed. Fortunately I stocked up on toilet paper and everything else to last me a very extended period of time. Unfortunately some here ridiculed the idea then later advocated total isolation. Those people more than anyone else should be looking into ways to protect themselves outdoors.

I've looked into these only precursorally. They're supposed to be as effective as a military gas mask, if made properly. I need to research them more. Good to have a few on hand in case I need more toilet paper in a few months.

Only losers get the Corona virus. Trump's a winner. It's those fake news hacks that have to worry about the loser Corona virus.

By the way, all of a sudden, for no apparent reason whatsoever, the CDC and the fake news is doing a 180 on masks.

Well both trump and a 180 by the fake news can't be right. Either trump is a winner and don't need a mask because they don't work, or masks do work and trump is a loser for not wearing it. What's it to be? (Rhetorical question - the Donald has answered this by his own actions and words).

That is extremely poor logic. I expect more from you, who uses logic to earn a living! Sad!

On a serious note, the abject derangement of Trump hating politicians appears to be the SOLE reason certain of them have restricted implementation of the so-called Trump Cure (chloroquine)(see governors of Nevada, Michigan as examples). I don't even know how the Trump Cure (which Trump had absolutely nothing to do with) became associated with Trump, but the mere mention of his name sets certain people into a dangerous tizzy with adverse affect on millions of innocent people.

I've been watching the official numbers for a while, and with the work I do, I know that they are understated in many countries.

As example North Korea has none, unlike all of it's neighbours. The numbers from China have hardly moved in a month.

Also, none of us have really accurate data, because we don't test everyone every 3 days, which is what we'd need to do to have accurate data (and then testing like that would bring it's own increases in the number of carriers).

This is humanities issue, we are all facing this together.

The country with the highest count, does the most testing.
Many third world countries can't afford to test nearly so many people. The numbers are a guide, they are not statistics.

North Korea's is plausible. No other country in the world has a border as tight as theirs and they certainly don't hesitate to disappear people.

We look at a different set of numbers... Admittet to hospital, in ICU, in ICU with a respirator and total number of deaths. The development of deaths do not immediately correlate to the others as people can stay in ICU with a respirator 2-5 weeks and end up either way or simply just drop dead.

Anyways... Curves are breaking and numbers are dropping. Isolation works. The challenge is slowly opening up without causing a surge in order for us to get to the point of protection by herd immunity or a functioning vaccine.

That's like saying, if you didn't test anyone, you'd have no cases

I suspect that North Korea has issues (like the rest of us), and they are just playing their cards close to their chest, rather than splashing it freely across the media.

No, it's actually saying, if you prevent patient zero from entering your territory, whom for every country other than China has been a foreigner or a traveler abroad, then you can prevent the spread among your own countrymen.

I don't know if NK is lying, but if there is any country on the planet where absolute border control is possible then it's obviously NK. That alone makes it plausible that they have no cases. That's quite different than passing judgement on the probability of zero cases in NK.

I don't know if it is still the case, but there used to be quite some traffic over the Chinese - North Korean border. North Korean workers coming from and going to China, and Chinese tourists.

I suspect the COVID-19 epidemic is handled the typical North Korean way: by decree, it does not exist, and just to make sure they shoot the messenger.

+1

Nk rely heavily on Chinese trade and tourism.

China also tried to silence the doctor who first broadcast about the virus existence (who had since died from it).

I don't know what news you were watching but we have never seen or heard him say that and trust me I pay a LOT more attention to Boris Johnson news than you do.

Now, it doesn't take much to find Donald fart playing it down (as not as bad as the flu. )

Lots of politicians did. Even the God Emperor St Donald the Magnificent. Your mistake was listening to them in the first place.

Basically, if they tell you something, it's a signal to to the exact opposite. They say don't worry about Corona? You take it seriously. They say don't hoard food? You hoard food. And ammo - as much as you cam lay your hands on. They say don't wear a mask? You make 30 of them and never leave home without one on your face.

And people say gubbemint is not reliable... pish posh... they may not be reliable in their actions, but in their words they are VERY reliable if you know how to interpret them.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/video ... osis-video
Indeed he did. That was on the 3rd of March and was with the caveat that people wash their hands (which still stands as advice) . It was also in the back drop of the disease only being mainly in China and following a scientific advice at the time whilst trying to avoid panic as a country's premier. It wasnt until 11th March that it became recognised as a pandemic. As the evidence mounted, statistics grew and science learned more he then adjusted accordingly including stopping filling rooms with people for briefings whilst telling us all to stay apart. At no point did he say words to the effect of "ignore the science, I know better" unlike guru Trump.... who is still filling rooms with journalist whilst telling them to stay apart.

All hail trump the almighty!

Possibly. I don't know much about it. Sounds crazy but one thing you can BANK ON: the conspiracy theorists are right far more often than the official narrative.

Just look at the examples I provided as evidence to that. The mask one in particular since it's already come to fruition. Evidence that masks work not only to protect others but to protect yourself is low hanging fruit on the simplest of goolag searches (as long as you don't quit at the first "credentialed" anti-response) . There is a LOT of scientific research that came after prior pandemics. The who and CDC claiming that a barrier to respiration does nothing or worse than nothing is nothing short of ludicrous as it defies common sense.

Official narrative 0, conspiracy theorists 1.

Does it matter why CDC refused to alter their recommendations? I think it's just bureaucratic inertia and ineptitude. They were wrong and they're still mostly wrong but at least they're starting to come around. If they fully come around, it will take a LONG time and many, many embarrassing episodes. Bureaucrats hate change even when they're 180 degrees in the wrong.

What we need is a Whitehouse full conspiracy theorists running the country (what with them being right most of the time and often to the contrary of what governments say).

Oh wait. We have Trump. We are saved!

I don't believe this virus thing is going around the world anyway. After all, it simply can't go round because the earth is flat (ain't it).

Compared to what? The reliably wrong status quo? Maybe, just maybe, those that hold power AND lie to your face could possibly be acting in self interest instead of the common good. You have a much greater chance of common good outcomes with people who BY DEFINITION are holding the corrupt to account.

Got myself a raspberry Pi (older model, Pi 3 Model B+ rev 1.3), basically only because i needed a ARM box to flash a external device and no other flasher was available

Since we are still in lockdown i started playing with it a bit, installed pi-hole (Network-wide Ad Blocking) which basically acts as DNS server for your whole LAN, this works really great and that made me wonder...
Could and has anyone tried to run a raspberry Pi to, be used & is it powerful enough to?

What did you think the purpose of investigating was for? Personal curiosity?

I get it that you're conditioned to a particular response when presented with the concept of "conspiracy theory". There is a conspiracy behind that conditioning as well.

Says the guy that mocked stocking your pantry and wearing a mask. Toe the line, prole!

Just to make sure you understand the reference, your conditioning to mock conspiracy theorists as all being flat earthers is precisely the same as your conditioning to fully accept the official narrative without question.

I suspect it's also why you cut Boris a break ("happened before it was widespread knowledge") while moaning about the God Emperor for exactly the same thing and even making things up out of whole cloth ("ignore science!").

How's your pantry?

Can only speak for myself... It's OK and if I'm missing anything I can go to the supermarket (by myself only - no family outing), utility shop or auto parts store as long as I abide by the rules ... 2 meter peer distance, 4m2 per child, cough in your sleve and wash your hands frequently.

Kindergarten and 0-5 grade starting up past-easter and people will be allowed to go to work following strict guidelines. For some companies it may even be mandatory for the workers to go to work in 30 minute intervals to prevent an internal "rush hour". If company cannot follow guidelines you stay at home and work from home. Expect Denmark to open up slowly over the next 2-3 months. All other restrictions are expected to last until August.

Barber shops and hairdressers we greatly miss but it may be August before I get to go have my new ponytail groomed ;-)

The danish version of Dr Anthony Fauci, Søren Brostrøm, is the one speaking the most at the daily press briefings. Allthough the lockdown was a political initiative, the director of the Statens Serum Institut, Søren Brostrøm, is someone EVERYONE listens to and when he says "jump" even the prime minister asks "how high?".

Of course it goes without saying (although if not said, some interpret it as willfully ignoring) that you should wash hands frequently, don't touch face, etc, etc. However, even the 2 meter thing is nonsense because this stuff is airborne, carried by "micro-droplets" that hang in the air for an indeterminate amount of time allowing the virus to survive up to 3 hours! In the air! Swirling around like dust.

Solution: wear a mask and/or ventilate the space. Especially in the workplace. If there is no proper mechanical ventilation then open the windows.

A "recent" HVAC innovation is the energy recovery ventilator. Best thing since the invention of air conditioning. Every new home should have one and if you have whole- house AC, next time you upgrade your equipment get one. Filtered fresh (outside) air that's tempered by a heat exchanger.

You do realize that all of our numbers are dropping and we managed to keep the death rate very low - WITHOUT wearing masks. Only healthcare professionals use masks (as allways) and the rest of us don't!

The HVAC thing is mandatory in Denmark as houses are built too tight - they actually pressure test new houses - HOWEVER, there is an ON/OFF switch. We don't have "whole house AC" systems in denmark, we use waterbased floor heating from a central heating source (gas, oil or a air-water heatpump). Most people just leave the heatexchanger on in bathrooms to remove moisture and disconnect all other rooms, after all... We build houses with windows that can be opened ;-)

That's not how it works. Unless your house is drafty enough to resupply the makeup air. But you already said Danish homes are air tight!

Hydronic radiant heat is catching on here. Its great comfort and less expensive (only heat the water to room temperature!). Very, very difficult to retrofit, but great for new homes. Also can easily be combined with geothermal. Even more savings. The only problem is that its heat only. Lots of areas here have hot, humid summers, so split unit heat pumps make a lot of sense. The way I see it, you get either AC or heat for free! Pick one. Combine with solar on a new home and you have a comfort/efficiency winner.

But for realz --> open the windows at work or turn the blower on high or both!

Yep. Exactly the same for us too. Shop/supermarket stock normal. Pantry stock normal. When it gets low I go shopping (like always did) and follow the rules. All the idiots that did selfish panic buying are still at home stepping over toilet paper and curdling milk leaving the rest of us to buy new fresh stock of everything they found themselves short of.

Life's good. Air is fair. Exercise could be a little better but I have just been given a 2 month holiday from work so this will be rectified along with a spanking nice garden by the end of May.

Why are you such a science denier? Nothing any western gubbemint has said about coronavirus has been true, nor have they followed any actual scientific guidance.

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0843-2
Common Sense!

The CDC, for example (and the WHO also, I suppose) discouraged masks not because they KNOW or BELIEVE that masks are ineffective (or worse - increase the infection rate  ) but rather because they had incomplete data on the subject. But, being ass covering bureaucrats, if they can't positively endorse it, they MUST discourage it. What they should have done was simply say, "hey, we don't have enough data to say one way or the other, so here's our research repository on the subject - have at it!" The exact same thing applies to droplet vs aerosol transmission. They used outdated models, definitions and research and then go on to pigeon hole it when asked. If its not white, it must be black. There's obviously no room between those two options!!! That's gross negligence only a bureaucrat or a lawyer could possibly come up with.

If the boobtoob idiots keep pushing this no mask lunacy, there will definitely be secondary flare ups after we get the damned thing under control and all this lockdown business will have been for nothing. I kind of think that might be the plan anyway. Its already happening in Asia, but of course, they wear masks, so its not spreading the way it will for us if we don't adopt the same policies.

But then again, NIH and AMA researchers are probably all flat earther nut jobs, which is why we should ignore them and only listen to the little man on the picture box.

Glad to know its all lies and we are all going to live.

Aw come on, I find it amusing. Not corona, but people's take and beliefs especially of communities and countries beyond their own. And the doubters of course. It's fascinating to see how different people interpret the same thing (whether it's a video or news report etc) differently and I'm properly amused by the reactions of doubters and cynics. (Even that comes different dependant on the individual - some could get angry and defensive whereas I find it so amusing I like to read what is written. Proper funny). I keep contributing because as others answer with quirky views it's like I'm authoring my own comic book.

And if it stops... ill just watch news reports of the Donald. Always good for making one feel better.
