POP3 wont connect to google mail

Post by griff365 » 2020-02-09 19:42

I'm using an external POP3 account to pull down email from Google for a specific user.
This used to work but has stopped working.

settings in hmailserver for the external POP3 account are:
pop.gmail.com:995
use TLS/SSL

I tried enabling Google 2-factor authentication and then creating an "app specific password" in google for hmailserver to use but this didn't work.

Found a way to make it work again:
If I turn on "Less secure app access" in the Google security settings of the google account to get this working again.

Why do I have to turn on "Less Secure App Access" in Google to get this to work. This goes against Googles recommendations for security.
Ideally I'd like to enable to 2-Factor authentication on the Google account but the app specific password feature doesn't seem to be compatible with hmailserver either.

Is there something I am doing wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong

hMailserver isn't compatible with GMails 2FA (Not many programs are though to be honest)
Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.
