imap folder limit

Post by bsdll » 2019-10-07 06:40

Hi

Is there a limit on the folder that can exist?

I have had some folders go missing and went looking for them on the server. I noticed that in the mail folder path for a user there were 256 folders, from 01 to FF.

If folders are created with 2 hex characters then I would be at the limit.

What happens when more folders are created if this is the case?

My Outlook is acting as if the missing folders were never even there.

Sorry, I did a little more digging in the forums and found that these folders don't correlate to the imap folders. So that's not the problem.

I still can't work out where the missing mail folders have gone, but that would be a different problem.

Just 'cause I link to a page and say little else doesn't mean I am not being nice.

Yep, Outlook on 2 different machines and an iPhone.

I did have a look in the database folder list and that folder is missing, with a sub-folder of that folder in the Deleted Items folder. Which is even more confusing, since that means they would have been deleted in sequence, which I know I didn't do.

Luckily I had another machine that hadn't connected to the mail server for a couple of weeks, so did a backup of that folder and copied it across.

In Outlook have probably dragged the folder to the trash, or 'deleted' it

You could also have dragged from the trash back to your main folder area

There is a chance I Shift-Deleted the folder, but I would have had to say yes to that - and then the sub folder being in the recycle bin is odd.

There is no chance I dragged to trash since I have about 100 folders in-between, so dragging it there would take a whole lot of holding and scrolling.

Anyway, I'm more worried my backups let me down, I had a backup from a few days ago but it didn't have any of my OST files.

I'm changing backup software today.
