Outlook 2010 Log onto incoming server... connection failed

Post by wannabetech » 2012-06-08 02:38

Hello,

I've been busting my head 8 hours a day for 4 days now... Seems to be replacing my day job.

I cannt figure out why I cannot setup my Outlook email client. I can send emails (through another email client) and enabling email forward to another email account works but cannot figure out why I cannot set up Outlook.

Please help!

Below is my log from trying to get onto Outlook. I had disabled forwarding so I could set up Outlook but no luck.

Microsoft Office Outlook or Outlook Express? Which version? Email client can be set with POP3 or IMAP account. Which account type would you like to use?

Hello Bill48105,

Those are the exact steps I used and I got the response "Log onto incoming mail server (IMAP): The connection to the server failed."

Details I used:

User Information:
Your Name: firstname@domain.com
E-mail Address: firstname@domain.com

Server Information
Account Type: IMAP
Incoming mail server: domain.com
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): domain.com

Logon Information
User Name: firstname@domain.com
Password: ******

Am I missing anything?

Do you have some antivirus which might mess with Outlook and leave other email program untouched? Do you use Mozilla Thunderbird in your second email program test?

Incoming mail server is not set to 'domain.com'. It is set to fully qualified domain name used by your email server. Sometimes people can forget to create 'domain.com' record in DNS configuration.

I have AVG but I disabled it while trying to set up Outlook.

I did try to use Thunderbird in between using Outlook to try other email clients.

Not sure what you mean by fully qualified domain name.

I used "nslookup -type=mx domain.com" and got the following information.

Non-authoritative answer:
domain.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mail.domain.com
domain.com MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = smtp.domain.com

domain.com nameserver = ns4.changeip.com
domain.com nameserver = ns3.changeip.com
domain.com nameserver = ns5.changeip.com
domain.com nameserver = ns2.changeip.com
domain.com nameserver = ns1.changeip.com
ns2.changeip.com internet address = xxx.xx.xx.xxx
ns2.changeip.com internet address = xxx.xx.xxx.xx
ns2.changeip.com internet address = xxx.xx.xxx.xxx
ns2.changeip.com internet address = xxx.xxx.xx.xx
ns4.changeip.com internet address = xxx.xx.xx.xxx
ns4.changeip.com AAAA IPv6 address = xxxx:xxxx:xx::xxx
ns5.changeip.com internet address = xxx.xxx.xx.xx

Also, I wanted to add that I tried to use MaxBulk Mailer to send out an email (it is a bulk emailer and mail-merge tool) and i was successful in sending out emails but when I tried to send an email from Outlook 2010 with the same SMTP server settings, it didnt work.

I can set hMailServer to forward emails and I successfully receive them but I would like to access them directly from the server instead of having it forward.

I just tried to "telnet domain.com 143" and got the following response.

Connecting To domain.com...Could not open connection to the host, on port 143: Connection failed.

Could this be the cause?

telnet mail.domain.com 143

'mail.domain.com' and not 'domain.com'. I've already said that you might have broken A record for main domain name.

Could you check Thunderbird account configuration. If you were able to connect to your IMAP server with Thunderbird, then TB autoconfigution guessed your incoming and outgoing server names and ports correctly. Check hostnames, port numbers, account type and TLS/SSL encryption settings for account in Thunderbird.

MaxBulk Mailer is not related to your problem. Outlook complains about incoming email configuration. Error is about IMAP. Bulk mailers don't do IMAP or POP, they only feed data to outgoing email servers.

Please note that you are asking generic Microsoft Outlook support questions on unrelated forum. If you are email server admin, you should know ports set on your server better than us.

If you search for AVG and outlook 2010 in your favorite search engine, seven out of ten first results are about problems.

:D Thank you, Bill48105! I appreciate all the advice.

I tried to telnet mail.domain.com 143 and got the same response.

I will absolutely check my A Records! Thank you again. Had not idea that was the problem.

I tried Thunderbird and response was, connection to server timed out.

My apologies if I seem to be asking generic Outlook support questions. I don't mean to. I just want to access the IMAP Server with Outlook or Thunderbird but there's a problem with the IMAP Server that I am trying to resolve.

I hate to say it but I was placed in charge of the email server but have no background in anything IT so I am just learning everything. Last week I didn't even know what DNS was.

I will start looking for a different anti-virus since AVG seems to be cause a lot of problems. THANK YOU AGAIN :D

Check firewall settings on your mail.domain.com server. Make sure that tcp 25, 110 and 143 ports are open. Normal connections don't timeout. Timeouts happen only when firewalls or broken routing configuration are in the picture. You were able to use tcp/25 for outgoing emails. It means that routing setup is working and you have something messing up with tcp/143 connection. If server also runs some workstation level antivirus, make sure that AV is not set to scan email traffic. Workstation antiviruses are designed for workstations and your email server is a server. It has different connection patterns and antiviruses might mess things up, if they start hijacking POP3 or IMAP client connections.

Could you also test telnet to 110 port on your server. It will check POP3 service availability.

Bill48105 you are my savior!

It finally works! AVG was definitely blocking my ports and I had set up my windows firewall incorrectly. I had added the rule to open port 110 and 143 on the Outbound Rule instead of Inbound and voila! It is finally up!!!

I still need to check if other users can access mail if they aren't on the same local network and need to look into what the DNS Blacklist and SURBL server Settings are for but I am able to send and receive emails to and from my gmail account.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I was just about to give up on our hMailServer project but you totally saved us!
