Definitely a vm configuration issue. If hms was working before and hasn't been changed then it's not hms (especially if the in internal emails are still working). Hundreds run hms on VMs, youre just not configuring the VM correctly to run a mail server and it's port or network requirements.

Do you actually have a question?

As it was working before, this is nothing to do with hmailserver. Your vm machine is not configured correctly. (Mail servers and their environmental requirements to work are pretty standard. But you already know that, right? )

Port 25 is usually blocked outbound (to stop you running a mail server and sending mail).

Currently, mx records point to a non existent address.
